Session Summaries by SAT Math Tutors

SAT Math Tutoring review by Lucas in Sacramento, CA
During this session, the student worked on additional practice problems. We focused on setting up algebra equations involving percentages, averages, etc. The student did very well with the easier problems, so we focused on some of the more tricky ones towards the end.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Sam in Sacramento, CA
The student and I worked on a few things today. We worked primarily on geometry and test strategy. She seemed to understand a good amount of the content for geometry, though we sealed a few gaps in her understanding of the subject. Additionally, we worked on some function related problems. She seems to excel most with algebra. After identifying her strengths and working on her weaknesses, we discussed strategy. She seemed to get stuck and lose track of time on a few problems. Since the SAT is a timed test, I suggested skipping problems she couldn't get started on in about 30 seconds (since she has a little over 1 minute per problem) and coming back to them if she has time at the end. Also, I suggested categorizing those skipped problems, and attempting the ones that deal with a subject she feels most comfortable with first (i.e., algebra related problems). Last, we discussed when to skip and when to guess, which was basically the 50% rule. If she could work the answer choice down to 2 answers, guessing would be a good idea. If not, then better to leave it blank and come back to it later in the test. I think she will do well on the test if she follows these strategies, as she seems good with the material.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Sacramento, CA
Since this was our last session before the student takes the SAT exam, we went through a couple of timed practice math sections to see how well he is able to go through problems within the time limit. He is doing very well with the geometry problems and most algebra problems. We went over the logic type problems and word problems since those seemed to be where he was struggling the most. We focused on how to write an equation from a sentence and what key words to look for in the question as well as in the possible answers in the multiple choice section for how to set up the equation. We reviewed proportions and ratios, arithmetic mean and median of groups of numbers, sequences, and interpreting charts and graphs.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Bishoy in Sacramento, CA
Today, the student and I went over one complete college entrance math practice test today. He did pretty well. We went over a few concepts together from the exam. I also had him read over ratios and percentages from a book, to solidify those concepts a bit more. The student and I will continue with more math practice next week. Before next week I asked him to skim over the algebra chapter he already read, and to also tell me a definitive date to take his college entrance exam in June. If he/the family decide to continue, I will make a study plan to incorporate the writing and verbal portions as well, while continuing the math practice, and culminating with practice exams in the weeks before his test date.

SAT Math Tutoring review by Thomas in Sacramento, CA
The student forged into the highest difficulty SAT questions today, with great success. We found perhaps the last opportunity he'll ever miss to solve a 2-variable expression, reviewed how to handle exponents and radicals in algebra, and did some tricky geometry. Our next plans are for him to take a full length practice SAT and see what cracks emerge in the actual test situation, so we can cover them with further review. After that, until 2 weeks before test day, we will simply do review of his day to day math class material to keep him engaging with math, until it's time for a prep workout routine leading up to test day.
