Varsity Tutors can connect you with thorough, qualified Pittsburgh LSAT preparation. As part of the application process into law schools, one of the requirements is taking the Law School Admission Test, or LSAT. The score you receive on the test is one of the primary factors law schools take into account when making a decision to accept you. It is a dependable indicator of how well you will do in the classroom, so it is important that you do well on this exam.
The LSAT is the only test accepted by all ABA-accredited law schools as well as Canadian common-law law schools, and it consists of four parts. As you begin the application process into such law schools as The University of Pittsburgh School of Law or Duquesne University School of Law, taking the LSAT is one of the biggest challenges you will face. Taking a Pittsburgh LSAT prep class is one option, and meeting with a Pittsburgh LSAT tutor is another. Either of these choices will help you get better prepared to take the exam. Varsity Tutors can help you make the right choice.
What does Pittsburgh LSAT prep cover?
The LSAT is made up of four sections which include Reading Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning, and Writing. You will get a tablet to use when you arrive at the test center. As you move through the test, you can use special features on the tablet such as highlighting, getting a five-minute warning, and flagging answers you want to review. You will choose your answer by tapping on the screen. Let's look at what each section covers so you know what to expect on test day.
The Reading Comprehension section is 35 minutes in length. You will have long passages to read that are similar to those you will read when attending law school. You will then have various questions to answer. The questions about the passages cover the main idea or primary purpose, the information or ideas that are either explicitly stated or inferred, the organization or structure, and the meaning or purpose of the words or phrases. Other types of questions you may have include analogies to claims or arguments from the passage, the principles, the author's attitude or tone, and the impact additional information has on the claims or arguments in the passage.
Another portion of the test is the Logical Reasoning section. You have a total of 70 minutes for two parts. You will read various texts, such as scholarly periodicals, advertisements, newspapers, magazines, and informal discourse. The ability to critically evaluate, analyze, and complete arguments is important for this section of the test. The skills assessed include applying principles and rules, identifying flaws and explanations in arguments, drawing conclusions with well-supported evidence, reasoning by analogy, and determining how adding additional information affects an argument. You will also be assessed on how well you can recognize how the parts of an argument relate to each other, recognize points of misunderstandings or disagreement, and detect assumptions made by particular arguments.
The next part of the LSAT is the Analytical Reasoning section. Like the Reading Comprehension section, it is 35 minutes in length. It measures how well you understand the structure of relationships and how well you can draw conclusions. This section assesses your ability to use reasoning with conditional statements, to infer what could be true or might be true based on facts and rules and based on new information presented as hypotheticals, to recognize two contextual statements that are logically equal, and to comprehend the basic structure of a set of relationships and determine a solution to the problem.
The final section is Writing. It is unscored and has a 35-minute time limit. This section uses an online platform and is administered separately from the other three sections of the test. You have one year from the date of the multiple-choice part of the test to complete the Writing section. In this section, you are given a writing prompt with a decision to make. Of the two choices, you will choose one and defend the side you chose. This writing sample will show law schools how well you can argue a position and how well you can reason, organize, compose, and use grammar and punctuation.
How does Pittsburgh LSAT prep help me prepare?
Varsity Tutors can connect you with two options for Pittsburgh LSAT prep. You may choose from either private tutoring or prep courses for extra help. Each of these options has its benefits, so you can decide whether one or both are what you need for review. Let's take a closer look at each of the options.
If you like working one-on-one with an instructor, we can connect you with a Pittsburgh LSAT tutor. The private instructor will focus on your goals for the review. They will look at your strengths and areas of opportunity to plan your sessions with your needs in mind. Your instructor won't have to worry about other students during your sessions, so the focus remains on you.
If you like working with others, you might want to consider a Pittsburgh LSAT prep course. For this course, we use our Live Learning Platform, which aids in collaborative, interactive online instruction. It is similar to a regular classroom, but without the commute. As soon as you sign up for a class, you can begin. You can choose between a two-week session and a four-week session. LSAT prep classes have group activities and discussions to help improve your understanding of the test. You will be able to interact with other students in addition to the private instructor. If you choose this option, you can still get extra one-on-one help from your instructor for any difficult concepts you can't quite get the hang of.
