How can a tutor assist you in conquering Phonics?

Every aspect of your child's future depends on how well they understand phonics. There are numerous reading strategies, and some work better for some students than others. The relationship between letters and sounds, however, is something that may not be ignored. Phonics is the foundation for your child being able to sound out and spell words, and ultimately read them without thinking much about it. Your student may be expected to decode words as they read. From kindergarten through second grade, reading instruction is usually phonics-based. A tutor may provide extra assistance in, for example, spelling out words and recognizing the sounds of vowels and consonants. If you suspect your child's class work is not enough, call Varsity Tutors today to find you phonics tutors in Sacramento, CA.

Students at this stage learn the basic parts of language. They must learn and be able to work with syllables. Phonemic awareness is developing at this crucial stage. Every class your child takes from here on out may require proficiency in reading. An expert phonics tutor in Sacramento may help your student stay ahead in class and adequately prepare them for standardized tests like the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress. Rather than breeze through topics that may be hard, a private tutor may focus on what troubles your student the most and spend as much time on that as needed. Several tried and tested methods of teaching are at the tutor's disposal. They may use techniques such as sound-to-word matching, phoneme deletion, or word-to-word matching.

Phonics Tutoring review by Robin in Sacramento, CA
The student and I worked on her spelling words from school. We sorted the words into word families and practiced writing them. I modeled reading fluently by reading Fun in the Sun to her. After I introduced possessive nouns to her, she read Up, Pup to me at an instructional level. We worked on the -ug word family. We reviewed 'l blends' and she completed some worksheets to assess her knowledge.

We finished a homework assignment the student had started before I arrived. She had to choose words from a list to complete sentences. She sounded out the words fine and did well completing the sentences. We also did the sight words and we added 4 new words. I had a list of words with mixed short sounds for a, i, and e. She read words on the list and did very well, needing very little prompting. We did phonics drills with lots of mixed blends and I introduced long i. We did some short e rhymes and she read some short e sentences. There was an activity where she had to write a word that rhymes with a word on the paper. We finished by reading one of her level 1 books. It had a few two syllable words in it and I introduced the concept to her. She did well.

The student had his word test that we have been spending every session preparing for, and he earned a 95%!!! He has never passed one of these tests, so for him to get nearly a perfect score is such a HUGE achievement! I am so proud of him! We are now spending our sessions preparing for the test he has in early May.

Phonics Tutoring review by Alyssa in Sacramento, CA
This was my last planned lesson with the student for the summer. Because of the date, we worked on writing a card for her father. The student wrote the whole card herself, and was able to sound out many of the letters/words without much assistance. She recognized Dad, love, you, I, me and to as sight words. For the remainder of our lesson, we read a story together, and the student was able to help read some of the sight words on each page. In case the student chooses to continue with someone else, here is what she knows: 1. Letters and some long and short vowel sounds 2. digraphs (with help)- sh, th, ch 3. blends (st, sl, br, etc.) 4. long-vowel ending in e- lake, drive, etc. 5. sight words- love, you, me, I, to, the (with help) I gave the student the workbooks that we have been using for her to practice with, and she has her own workbooks and easy-reader books. I have no concerns, and I wish her the best of luck!

Phonics Tutoring review by Linda in Sacramento, CA
Today, the student and I worked on motor skills by tracing his first and last name. His grip has gotten stronger and he is starting to slowly correct his pencil form. The letter we went over today was 'o.' He was able to help me find 3 words that started with the letter 'o' (orange, octopus, oven) We than practiced writing upper and lower case 'o' and he also free handed the letter on his own.

We continued our work with blends . I reviewed the practice work that the students completed with their mother, working with blends fr, gl, dr. They were then given sight words on sticky notes to place on chart paper based on their beginning blend sound. I noticed they are having just a little difficulty with distinguishing between the blend cr and tr. We reinforced their differences through practice. We then moved on to adding three new blend sounds pl, cl, and fl, they did a great job with these blends and worked a little more independently completing the blend recognition activity. From there we completed a matching activity for reading comprehension. I read short sentences to them and they matched each sentence to a picture that reflected their understanding. We did a writing activity with short sentences using their sight words. I finished the session with a short story called Jack's Jet.
