If you are preparing for your college admissions exams and are looking for comprehensive ACT review, Varsity Tutors can get you connected with Madison ACT preparation options. If you are a student nearing the end of your time at an area school such as Middleton High School or West High School, you may be thinking of where to start in the application process for colleges. Most likely you will need to first take on one of the two most commonly accepted college admissions exams like the ACT.
The five sections that make up the ACT will challenge the many different skills you have learned throughout your previous academic years. Madison ACT prep can be beneficial in giving you a more complete review than the one you may be able to get on your own. If you are stuck in the middle of your review, or you are simply looking for a place to begin, a prep course or tutor can help you make the most of the study time you have left before facing your exam. Varsity Tutors can get you connected with the right resource to meet your needs and fit into your busy schedule.
What could Madison ACT prep help me prepare for?
The ACT is made up of four required sections and an optional Writing section. You will be given just under three hours to complete the required Math, English, Reading, and Science sections, with an additional 40 minutes given if you choose the ACT Plus Writing. Let's take a closer look into the sections, topics, and skills that you will be tested on.
In the Math section, you will be allowed 60 minutes to answer 60 multiple-choice mathematical problems. These problems will test a wide range of math skills that you have learned throughout school. From pre-algebra to geometry to trigonometry, you will be expected to have a good grasp of numerical reasoning, graphing, equation interpretation, geometric calculations, and probabilities. With just a minute per problem, you will want to be sure to tackle this section with speed and accuracy.
Next is the English section, where speed will also be a factor. You'll have just 45 minutes to answer 75 multiple-choice questions which will be based on short passages throughout the section. Most of these questions will ask you to make editing decisions and to revise the text presented. You will be tested on sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and style and tone of language. Some questions may focus on just one sentence, while others may ask about the full passage.
The following Reading section is presented in the same way as the English section, which the questions following passages. You will have 35 minutes for the 40 multiple-choice questions in this section. As opposed to the mechanics of writing that the English section focused on, this portion of the test will cover overall reading comprehension. You will be asked to make connections between different texts, determine word or phrase meanings, and identify central ideas and themes.
Science is the final section, and you will be allowed 35 minutes to answer 40 passage-based, multiple-choice questions. The problems will range in topic from biology, chemistry, Earth and space sciences, and physics. Some important concepts to know will include analyzing scientific data in different formats, working with the scientific method and other procedures, experimentation, and scientific interpretation.
If you chose the optional Writing section, you will then be given 40 minutes to construct a well-developed and clearly written essay. The essay will ask you to organize and draft your ideas, compare your arguments and the arguments presented, and analyze different perspectives on an issue. Your grasp of written English will also be evaluated here.

I have a lot of experience teaching & tutoring and have completed a wide variety of standardized test with excellent scores.... Start by trying to achieve a broad understanding and refining it as needed.... Introduce myself, meet the student, and identify areas of strength and weakness.... Short breaks, fun problems.... Ask leading questions until the student understands, and then try to build a deeper understanding.... Try to make the passage seem more approachable or put it in simpler terms.

...of strategies including mnemonic devices, physical manipulatives, and drawings/diagrams to accommodate different learning styles. Typically, I have the students attempt to solve a problem and then ask leading questions whenever he/she gets stuck. If the questions are more conceptual in nature, I start with what the student knows and build upon that knowledge. I am passionate about math and science, and I use that enthusiasm to help develop skills and confidence of my students.

...of Wisconsin-Madison in May of 2016 with a BA in English Literature and a certificate in Global Cultures. I'd love to help with any ACT/AP English prep, as well as any other English-related teaching services required. I believe learning works best when the subject becomes relevant for the student, not just as something they "have" to learn, but as something that can help make life worthwhile. Learning should be a joy, not a chore!... I strive to teach students through grounding new knowledge in their own personal experiences. My philosophy is based on creating intrinsic motivation; when people are interested in the subject at hand and feel it is relevant to their lives, that is when meaningful learning takes place.

I find joy in helping students meet their educational needs and helping them succeed wherever their learning takes them. You see, critical-thinking is the pathway to engaged learning.
