Jacksonville Latin Tutoring FAQ

If you're in need of a Jacksonville Latin tutor for yourself or your student, Varsity Tutors can help you get set up with a high-quality instructor. Latin is technically a dead language, but its legacy lives on in the world around us. We see its reach in the English language every single day, and it serves as the basis of the Romance languages spoken globally. Ask anyone working in law, medicine, scientific research, and theology, and they'll tell you that Latin vocabulary is an integral part of their professional vernacular. If you're ready to invest in sharpening your linguistic skills, working with a Jacksonville Latin tutor can be a wise choice.

What is the upside of studying with a Jacksonville Latin tutor near me?

There are a number of reasons to consider Jacksonville Latin tutoring, chief among them the benefits reaped from having access to an expert on the language. Latin isn't necessarily an exceedingly complex language, but it is distinct enough from most modern language that it can be useful to have a helping hand as you navigate certain elements. One of the biggest differences relates to how meaning is implied. In most modern languages, we rely on word order to determine the meaning of a sentence. For example, "The snake bit the dog," has a different meaning than, "The dog bit the snake." In Latin, however, it is not the order of the words which dictates the meaning, but the inflection, or ending of the word, which makes the determination. These sorts of peculiarities can make developing proficiency difficult for some students.

It is here that working with Jacksonville Latin tutors helpful. These instructors are put through vigorous vetting to ensure they have the requisite knowledge to sufficiently explain the material and assessed on their communication skills to make sure they have the ability to effectively communicate the information. They can craft lesson plans that establish a strong foundation of the basics and then build from there, gradually building to proficiency. Because they work with students one-on-one, they can shift lesson plans as needed and answer questions as they arise, helping to thoroughly develop comprehension. This sort of individual attention can be hard to secure in a classroom setting, making Jacksonville Latin tutoring particularly valuable as a complement to high school classes.

Jacksonville Latin tutors are also helpful because they can help with memorization. While memorization plays a central role in learning most modern languages, it's even more pivotal in the study of Latin because of how the language developed. For instance, those who have studied Romance languages are all too familiar with the notion of gendered nouns, Latin has its own approach to dealing with it the idea. There are no gendered articles or suffix-based rules. Instead, there are masculine, feminine, and neuter classifications. In theory, these are supposed to be relatively intuitive, but in some cases, they aren't all that obvious. For instance, flame (flamma) is feminine, year (annus) is masculine, and war (bellum) is neuter. None of these terms, on face, in context, or in spelling, are necessarily intuitively related to a gender, and give you an idea as to why a great deal of study might be necessary to develop proficiency in the language.

In working with a Jacksonville Latin tutor, students have the benefit of access to someone who has already jumped through the hoops of memorizing these terms. They can drill students on topics and vocabulary until they've developed proficiency. They can also introduce different tactics for memory retention to improve recall. One of the advantages of working one-on-one with an instructor is that these tactics can be customized to play to a student's strengths. For instance, some students are more visually oriented, while other students are more verbally oriented. For the more visual student, the instructor might introduce flashcards that associate terms with associated images, while the more verbal student might see flashcards that associate English and Latin terms. These small customizations can make a big difference and are more difficult to find in a classroom setting.

Jacksonville Latin tutors can also tailor lesson plans to a student's individual learning needs. In a classroom setting, the teacher is bound by the confines of the school year. They have a set curriculum and only so many days to cover all of the material. They don't necessarily have the time to slow down and check whether or not every student in the room fully understands each unit before moving on to the next one, and they really can't skip ahead just because one student already understands the material. Your Jacksonville Latin tutor doesn't have to worry about where the other students are at; they only have to worry about you. If it turns out you've already got this week's vocab list on lock, there's no reason you can't move on to next week's list or the week after that. If you're really struggling, they can rearrange the schedule or come up with different strategies for presenting the same information to try to help you get caught up. These sessions are about setting you up to do your very best.

Latin Tutoring review by Andrew in Jacksonville, FL
Today, we worked through a translation passage that the student had to do for class this week, giving me a good look at how he's doing with a lot of the grammar and vocabulary right now. Through this passage, we reviewed the new pronouns hic and ille, as well as the perfect passive indicative. After this, we continued to look at the forms and meaning of the demonstrative pronouns.

We had a very interesting class. The student has taken it upon himself to read articles online in French with advanced vocabulary. We spent the entire session discussing foreign politics and foreign law, which is his area of interest, entirely in French. I saw some great improvements in his pace, and can see that he is becoming more and more confident in his speaking skills.

Latin Tutoring review by Nicole in Jacksonville, FL
Today we finished going through our verb synopsis of fourth conjugation verbs and then reviewed the conjugations of subjunctive verbs. We did a few goal post exercises to reinforce indicative and subjunctive conjugations. Then I decided that the student might benefit from going ahead a little bit in her lessons and we went over independent uses of the subjunctive, notably the jussive subjunctive. We then finished the lesson with a few Latin to English sentences that use the subjunctive.

Latin Tutoring review by Annie in Jacksonville, FL
We went over grammar, especially grammar on nouns. We reviewed all the cases, and then we went over how to apply them in English first. Once the student grasped the idea in English, we moved on to applying the grammar in Latin. He needs to study his endings. I'm going to create a basic study guide for him, and I want him to study it every day (even for 15 minutes) and eventually memorize it so he won't have to ever refer back to it.

Latin Tutoring review by Peter in Jacksonville, FL
This week, the student and I reviewed the homework. He is really understanding this material. We worked more on reviewing the meaning of "dare" (to give) which is still difficult for him. Then, we added third person to the second and first person we've been working with. He picked up on this topic quickly, and we used Star Wars characters to create short sentences using third person Latin words. He learned "res publica" (republic), "senatus" (senate), and "pater" (fatherland, country) while translating. I'll send along a short assignment reviewing first, second, and third person. Good work!

Latin Tutoring review by Abigail in Jacksonville, FL
The student and I started our session this morning by looking at one of his translation assignments. He was able to produce a pretty accurate translation, which is great, but was also falling into one of the more common early Latin pitfalls: joining words together based on their English meaning to form a coherent sentence without actually recognizing the forms or the Latin syntax. In other words, he was not "reading from the Latin." This is a very common difficulty for beginning Latin students, and often comes from a lack of familiarity and comfort with Latin case endings and verb forms. To help with this, I went over the forms of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd declension in detail, and gave him some helpful handouts from the Latin Library. I also gave him some exercises on case formation and usage. He seemed to be a bit more comfortable with the cases in Latin by the end of our session.
