Ann Arbor Latin Tutoring FAQ

Varsity Tutors can pair you or a student in your family with an Ann Arbor Latin tutor who can provide guidance and support as you reach for your language learning goals. Students and working professionals alike, regardless of their age or current skill level, can benefit from working with a private instructor. Whether you are looking for someone who can help your student develop the building blocks of Latin or need assistance as your own class moves through more advanced aspects of the language, one great option is working with a dedicated and personal academic mentor

How can an Ann Arbor Latin tutor near me improve my skills and confidence with the language?

Latin provides the basis for Romance languages like Spanish, French, and Italian. It is commonly used in medicine, theology, scientific research, and law. Perhaps you or your student are taking Latin in order to meet an educational requirement or as a stepping stone before moving into another language. Or maybe Latin knowledge is a useful skill for the career you plan on heading toward. Whatever reasons there are for you or your student to learn the language, working with an Ann Arbor Latin tutor could be key to helping to increase understanding.

There are a number of important advantages to be had by studying with Ann Arbor Latin tutors, perhaps the most significant of which is the opportunity to receive instruction that is tailored to your specific strengths, weaknesses, and needs. Most language learning takes place in a formal classroom environment. Teachers must adhere to a strict curriculum, so the needs of each individual student cannot typically be met equally. When you are paired with an expert private instructor, your development and success are the only focus of your lessons together. You will not be asked to work at anyone else's preferred pace, and you can express concerns with the material while getting regular feedback on your progress. Instructors can use the first sessions to evaluate the current knowledge of you or your student and then customize future lesson plans for maximum effectiveness.

Ann Arbor Latin tutors can use the experience they have to help you or your student in any aspect of the Latin language, from basics like pronunciation and vocabulary to inflection and how words relate to each other. Some concepts are fairly straightforward, while others, like the gendering of nouns, could be unfamiliar to you. Ann Arbor Latin tutors can identify which areas could make the most difference in your Latin knowledge and focus their efforts in the most useful way.

All individuals learn best in their own way. Your experienced educator can utilize various teaching methods depending on your or your student's personal learning style. Practice is key when attempting to learn a new language, and the instructor that you are paired with can even use immersion techniques, conducting lessons entirely in Latin, to give you the opportunity for the language to become second nature.

How can I fit Ann Arbor Latin tutoring into my busy schedule?

Another great benefit of taking part in private instruction is its flexibility. We understand that you likely have a schedule already full of personal, professional, and educational obligations. This shouldn't prevent you from seeking out the supplemental assistance that you need. We can connect you with an academic mentor who not only has the proper skills to help support your learning but who is also available when you or your student are. Ann Arbor Latin tutoring is much easier to participate in when it fits conveniently into the schedule of you or your student.

In addition, private instruction can be conducted in either an online or in-person setting. If you choose to take part in online lessons, you and your instructor will be able to take advantage of the virtual Live Learning Platform that we provide. The platform is complete with tools like a virtual whiteboard and video chat. You can also employ a shared document editor that allows you to easily work on skills like spelling and composition. All you need is a reliable internet connection. You can access your sessions from your own home, your preferred branch of the Ann Arbor District Library, or another comfortable location.

If you or your student would rather take part in Ann Arbor Latin tutoring in person, we can find someone located near you who is willing to meet at a convenient location. They can come to your home if you prefer or meet you at a local coffee shop to conduct lessons.

If you are the type of person who likes to study in a group setting, Varsity Tutors also provides online Latin courses where you can work with an instructor as well as like-minded classmates who are going through a similar process as you. Multiple sections of these courses run concurrent to each other, and new sessions begin each month so you can find one that makes sense for your current schedule.

Latin Tutoring review by Anna in Ann Arbor, MI
We began our session with a translation exercise from the student's homework. With a couple exceptions regarding phrasing and verb tenses, his translation was quite accurate! Next we reviewed his last test, which he received a 77% on. He seemed to struggle with translating verbs properly, so we went through each sentence and reviewed how to translate them. I told him to look at the mood, tense, and subject of each verb, in that order, when checking over his work on tests. By the third sentence, he was correcting his mistakes on his own. He currently has a B in his Latin class, and is feeling much more confident. He has made some great progress in the last couple months!

The student and I reviewed lines from book 1 of Virgil's Aeneid. We also talked about specific grammatical points and vocabulary, as well as certain literary devices and literary conventions. He should re-review the material we covered.

Latin Tutoring review by Nicole in Ann Arbor, MI
The student is just beginning to learn Latin so we went over her first declensions which she just learned and then began going over her second declensions. We also went over first conjugation verbs in the present tense. She did a great job and was very quick to learn and understand concepts. We went over a few examples of basic sentences, some of which I constructed myself to get across simple concepts and others that came from my personal copy of a Latin textbook. For the next week I left her with all the notes from our session. As she is just beginning to learn Latin I want to help her by reinforcing what she just learned and better explain concepts she went over in school.

Latin Tutoring review by Toni in Ann Arbor, MI
In this session, we started out by working through the student's Latin worksheet, which covered grammar and culture for the current stage in his textbook. We worked through the grammar dealing with indirect statements together, and as always, he was very quick and mostly accurate with his answers. What does give him a bit of trouble is, ironically, not the Latin, but the bits of culture described in his textbook in English. He seems to have trouble finding the answers to questions asking about those texts. I think he may be reading too much into the questions, and this might be affecting his class performance in Latin, English, and elsewhere. In future sessions, we will work on how to read critically to respond to questions. We did also work on his English a bit. For English, he has The Odyssey approaching quickly in class, so we spent a bit of time discussing that. He says he has read the book before, which will be to his advantage. We spent some time discussing some background information on The Odyssey to perhaps pique his interest in it again.

Latin Tutoring review by Emily in Ann Arbor, MI
We practiced Latin for most of the session. The student has her vocabulary and pronunciation down pretty well, and her verbs are pretty solid. However, her case endings and their functions are a struggle for her, so she tends to just take stock of the vocabulary in a sentence and the verb and try to guess what the sentence means. We worked on her ability to reason through what the sentence actually says without having to guess.
