Recent IB Social and Cultural Anthropology HL Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I went over two more chapters from "Is There No Place On Earth For Me?" We continued our discussion of the impact of upbringing and genetics on the development and manifestation of schizophrenia. We also went over several discussion questions the professor had assigned.
The focus of today's session was psychology. To begin with, we looked at the student's psychology paper, and discussed the comments her professor made on the draft version she submitted. From the comments, we identified changes that needed to be made, and proceeded to do the research necessary to make those changes. After we had worked on the paper for an hour, we transitioned to reviewing a chapter out of the student's psychology textbook. Since the chapter was on a childhood disorders, a subject she is familiar with from her work, the review was straightforward and progressed swiftly. Overall, the session was highly productive.
We began by discussing the nuances of several possible topics for her healthcare and biotechnology course paper. We then went over confusing topics which will be on the cognition midterm--specifically regarding reading and attention. I looked up the scientific papers which formed the basis of various points made in the lecture slides and explained how this can be a good way to study for science courses. She is a conscientious and enthusiastic student--a real pleasure to work with!
The student and I began this session by completing an optional assignment for her English class and further developed the ideas and format that will make up her public argument about standardized testing. We then switched to working through her second attempt at a take home quiz for her psychology course and at the end of our session she turned it in. She received an A.
We reviewed using his study guide for chapters on sensation and perception. He had trouble with the process of visual sensation and so we reviewed the steps necessary for light to enter the eye and get translated into a electrical signal. We also discussed a number of issues with perception and how the body's system that relies on baselines for sensations can be tricked by illusions. He was much more comfortable talking about these perception issues and had a high level of curiosity throughout the session.
We focused on topics of intelligence, testing, standardization, cognition and memory today. She did very well on all these topics and only struggled with extremely specific questions which is very understandable. We worked on government questions a lot. I stressed to her the importance of being specific, using the names of the people given in the problem rather than saying "a person" is much more effective and what the AP testers are looking for.
