Recent IB Tutoring Session Notes
For this meeting, we spent the majority of our time split between the student's Comm Arts paper and studying for her upcoming Spanish vocabulary quiz. She also had a Science quiz (moon cycles) and a History quiz (Middle East map) in a week. For her Comm Arts paper, we added the needed three complex sentences, worked on the conclusion, added the paragraph transition sentences, and added the attention grabber. I asked her to add in the page numbers and one more book reference before handing in the draft. We studied the vocabulary for her Spanish quiz at the beginning and the end of the session. We also discussed strategies to study for the History map quiz.
I met with the student today. We worked on a sheet for his Algebra class and then we went over testing strategies for a quiz he has tomorrow. We also talked about using a planner and checked Haiku to make sure he knew what homework he had over the next week.
Met with the student's current tutor. We discussed the student's main problem areas and his learning style. The tutor thinks that the biggest areas to work on are organization and focus. He learns well through repetition and by relating topics to his interests. We also went over the subjects the student is currently studying, his family's expectations for him, and how sessions are normally scheduled.
The student wanted to learn about time management, when he should study what subjects, and to work on his religion notes. We decided what the time limits should be for him to study each course. He decided that he needs to study Spanish more; so, he will devote the last hour of study to Spanish. We talked about what tests he has coming up and how he will study for them. I gave him three assignments; write goals for all classes, tell me who Sam Houston is, and write notes for his religion class. All of these assignments are to be emailed to me to check.
We completely overhauled both her history and math binders. She threw away any scrap papers and put her papers in chronological order. She re-did all of her dividers to reflect the chapters/topics opposed to the designations her teacher gave her. With finals coming up, I was very proud of her for organizing early. Because she has a French test tomorrow, I advised that she take extra time tonight to prepare.
We went over the student's current organizational and study strategies. Then we discussed ways of modifying current strategies and implementing new ones. We also went through his backpack to see his current system and discussed how to better organize his physical notes and homework. We worked out the best times of the day for him to focus on schoolwork and created calendar appointments on his devices so that every day he would get these reminders.
