Session Summaries by English Grammar and Syntax Tutors

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Sara in Washington DC
He did a nice job this evening. He read a two page fourth grade level story about ants at a slower pace, and he was able to answer the follow-up questions without any trouble. I had him make up a few more questions as well. He was able to do this as well, which shows me that he remembered the story really well. We then played a grammar game, which he seemed to enjoy. The better he is at recognizing the different parts of speech, the more likely he will be to realize he has skipped a word in the sentence while he is reading. I asked him to try placing his finger on every word he reads as he reads for school and at home. He does really well understanding when he ensures he reads every word, and I think this will help him develop the natural ability to not skip over words. We will keep working on this in the coming weeks as well. He is doing very well in the sessions, and I think he is progressing nicely!

Again, the student and I started off with him writing the alphabet and singing the alphabet song to jog his memory. Afterwards, I helped him with his homework which consisted of the word "help"ù as well as more addition and subtraction problems.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Katharine in Washington DC
The student had an incredibly focused session today. We primarily reviewed her writing homework, which also included reading a long, two-page article. The student did a wonderful job of reading the article. She was both active in her reading and focused. It's great to see her making connections between the material she reads and her knowledge about other subjects. The student's writing also continues to improve, and it's clear that she's very interested in writing at the moment as she was eager to answer a series of comprehension questions with incredible detail. She's also more and more interested in working independently! I hope the student can keep up the good work and practice both her reading and writing over the summer!

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Angela in Washington DC
The student had math homework involving converting liquids, like pints to quarts and quarts to gallons, etc. He also had word problems in math. For homework he had to read an article and answer questions about the article. Next, we continued our reading of Charlotte's Web, which he is enjoying. I had him read a short story from a book and I had him use the annotation symbols I taught him while reading. When he was done we reviewed the symbols he used and addressed each one. His teacher is not using these symbols in the classroom, but I introduced this method to him to help with comprehension. Last, he read from a reading comprehension book and completed an exercise on identifying fact versus opinion statements.

We worked on the student's weekly book report this session. We read the book Panda Bear, What do you see? and filled out the summary and setting sections. As this was our last session I encouraged her to keep reading and working on her phonics.
