Today, the student and I reviewed the sentences that he wrote using vocabulary words. Overall, he did a good job writing out full sentences and using the words in their proper contexts. For his next assignment, he'll work on using more detail to more fully illustrate the word definitions. We then went over prepositions - the definition of a preposition, common prepositions, as well as prepositions of time and of place. We need to work on prepositions a bit more. Next we reviewed food vocabulary and went over a new menu he brought to the lesson. Most interesting for him was finding out that the word "sesame" in English is closely related to the word for sesame in Arabic! We ended the session with conversation about the upcoming weekend and about common greetings (What's up? How's it going?).

Today the students practiced their skits and made a few changes and additions to the script. They can do them mostly without the notes and with natural tone and animation. They are so funny! They made an invitation card for Friday's performance.

During our last session, the student and I used a page out of a calendar to start talking about daily, weekly and monthly schedules. We reviewed the days of the week and the months of the year. I created a sample schedule for the calendar which I used to ask her questions. For example, we dealt with questions like, "What does Maria do on Mondays?" This exercise relied a lot on the verbs "to go" and "to do." I left her with an exercise that will help her practice using the verb "to go." Lately I've been slowly trying to incorporate the following sentence structure into our lessons: I want to (insert infinitive here). She is having a hard time understanding why and when we put "to" in front of verbs; for that reason I've been trying to introduce the conjugated verb + infinitive structure.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Justine in Sacramento, CA
During the first half of today's session, we focused on past tense "to be" conjugations, translating "am/is/are" to "was/were." This also involved reviewing vocabulary and learning new vocabulary by translating words in the book into Turkish and making sure to spell out each word using the English alphabet. I pressed her harder on pronunciation today, reminding her to make a clear distinction between vowels. Finally, we spent the last part of the session having a basic conversation about Turkey. She seems much more communicative and confident than she was when I began tutoring her. I encouraged her to keep learning English on her own using the workbook we started.
