Today the student and I worked on numbers and places (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc.). I found that she was a little challenged on how to find the value, but we were able to practice and she picked it up quickly. We moved onto multiplication word problems, which she found simple. Then we worked on more multiplication reviewing 3's to close off the session.

We reviewed the student's homework on nonnumerical patterns and solving equations with two operations. We then worked on 6-10 multiplication facts. His new multiplication time is 1:32, division 2:13 which is amazing improvement. We then talked about PEMDAS and patterns with solving equations. Next we reviewed his following lesson.

We did some homework involving converting fractions and decimals into percentages. While the student easily converted decimals and fractions with denominators that were factors of 100, he had trouble with long division of other fractions. Also, he started writing neater and he realized it was easier to solve because he does not spend time having to reinterpret what he wrote.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Dorothy in Sacramento, CA
Today we started by catching up on some school work, comparing two whale ancestors and looking for differences. We went on to working on homework. First, an assignment on probability followed by writing questions that end with the answer 10. For that assignment she was allotted 15 minutes. She was focused and systematic in her work and filled the entire page with questions using math facts. We finished by playing a game. As we rolled the dice and moved our pieces on the board, she was quick to add the totals, showing her knowledge of her basic math facts and improvement in speed.

During the first half of the session, I worked with the student on word problems and making estimates. At first, she didn't fully grasp estimates but after a few more examples, she seemed to understand. I worked with the student on geometric proofs. She understood the postulates but couldn't keep them all straight. I encourages her to create a master list of postulates to memorize. We also went over some math PSAT problems.
