In this session we covered solid geometry. Specifically, we covered volume and surface area of a cube, cylinder, cone, finding the diagonal of a cube, and finding the volume and surface area of a rectangular prism. I'll send her more practice tests to help her better prepare for the upcoming exam.

We reviewed the reading and science sections from the first ACT practice test. Although her reading score was a bit lower than she would like, the student did quite well in the science section, scoring 36/40. She is very intelligent and determined, so I think she will benefit greatly from our tutoring sessions and further ACT practice.

The student and I focused today on setting her up with a practice schedule and with going over her ACT materials provided to her by her school (she takes an ACT course offered at her high school on Mondays and Thursdays). We went over math problems she struggled with today. I assigned her a practice exam from her ACT prep book (to be taken in full and proctored by her mother), as well as 10 questions/ day from the math and science sections in her other prep book.

Today the student and I went over the English and reading sections from her practice test. I recommended doing the science passage first. We then continued our review of the science section. We did practice passages and we talked through each table and experiment for each. I asked her to identify the relevant variables and patterns for each before she moved on to the questions themselves. I then had her do the problems under timed conditions.

We worked on practice questions for the ACT. I have access to a series of quizzes. Today, we focused on the English portion of the ACT for the first half, then a mix of math and science for the second half. She did well on English, not displaying any particular weaknesses. We did a little bit of science too, those went very well. I showed her the tests on the site. She found them useful and said she'd try them on her own. The math questions went well, and she only missed one out of the approximately 20 practice Math questions that we did.

We went over general test taking strategies as well as the breakdown of the test. This included the layout of each section in terms of number of questions, time per question, types of questions/passages, etc. The student was very responsive and attentive to all of the material we went over. I left her with a practice ACT test to take before our next meeting. We went over the English section in great detail and took two different short practice passages. She did very well on the English section and followed my suggestions and instructions. We then went over the Reading section. I gave her strategies for saving time on this rather arduous section. We will work on it more at our next meeting. We talked about "engaging your test": marking and enumerating which problems were difficult or uncomfortable, as well as parts of the question which are of particular importance.
