Session Summaries by ACT Math Tutors

ACT Math Tutoring review by Kelly in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
Today, the student and I continued working on the college entrance exam math section. We focused on systems of equations, and factoring in particular as well as the various ways the test will ask those type of problems. I reminded her how to use elimination to solve a system of equations up to three equations and we did practice problems with both two and three equation systems. Next, we reviewed factoring and talked about how the question could ask for the zeroes, roots, or to solve for x and those are all the same thing as well as how this ties into domain and range from our prior discussions. We did practice factoring problems and I feel like she has improved a lot in both her confidence and ability to factor. Overall, it was a great session and we will continue working on the math topics we have left next time.

We finished going over the problems she missed on her last math exam. We then reviewed some concepts with which she's had trouble: solving algebra problems involving fractions, finding x and y intercepts, and percent increase and decrease. She then took a practice English exam where she did very well, and we went over the questions she missed.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Matt in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
We reviewed a recent practice test for ACT math. The student understood all explanations and had no problem grasping the correct answer after being shown the correct method for solving the problem. She had a particularly hard time with probabilities and deriving the equation for an arithmetic sequence, so we spent extra time on those problems. We also discussed tips for saving time and pacing on the exam in order to give her more time to solve problems toward the end of the exam and review previous problems. Overall, it was a very smooth and positive session.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Amber in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
Our topic for the day was solving quadratic equations. That is a BIG umbrella to cover and we went over a lot of material, but I think the student handled it very well. We talked about the three methods of solving quadratics: factoring, square roots, and the quadratic formula. We had talked about factoring last session, so we didn't do too much with that one. The other two methods required a review of radicals. We did multiplying, adding/subtracting, and dividing (rationalizing the denominator) radical expressions. I didn't print off worksheets this time, but she has the notes and the website for more practice. We also did a few questions of the workbook. We starred a few to save for next time because they are system of equation problems, and that is our topic for Wednesday.
