Private In-Home and Online ACT Tutoring in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA

Receive personally tailored ACT lessons from exceptional tutors in a one-on-one setting. We help you connect with in-home and online tutoring that offers flexible scheduling and your choice of locations.

How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

If you are preparing for college, then chances are you are also preparing for the ACT. Have you purchased all the test prep books and practice exams only to find that you feel buried under a pile of information and have no idea where to even begin? A tutor can help you organize all the information out there and optimize your study time. For help finding an ACT tutor in San Francisco, California, contact Varsity Tutors. Our educational directors can help locate a tutor who can be flexible to your schedule and meet with you at a time and place that works best for you, including online.

San Francisco ACT tutors work with you in a one-on-one environment, allowing for customized study sessions geared to your personal studying needs. This means that, unlike a study group or test prep course, you focus on only the test sections you need help with or on the specific troubling areas within each section. You can take a practice exam as an assessment of your current skills, and from there, you and your tutor can determine where to focus. You may decide that you want to cover each section (math, reading, writing, English, and science). Your tutor can also give you periodic practice exams throughout your tutoring sessions to gauge your progress. This also allows for you and your tutor to go through your answers on the exam together, which gives you the opportunity to receive clarification on any answers marked incorrect. Rather than going through practice exams on your own and checking the answers with an answer key, working with a private tutor allows you to have mini-lessons on any area you are confused on. This is especially helpful on the writing section, as it would be pretty difficult for you to grade your own essay. Your tutor can provide helpful insight on essay-writing methods and test-taking techniques.

ACT Tutoring review by Rebecca in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
The student and I reviewed every single section she will see on the ACT. She says that she felt much more confident with the material, realizing that most of the mistakes she made were due to the fact that she wasn't reading the questions or answer choices thoroughly. I definitely agree with her and think that if she can keep her focus on the questions, she will have no trouble on test day. She has improved a lot since I started working with her and I have high hopes for her on this test! She was a pleasure to work with!

ACT Tutoring review by Shannon in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
We reviewed the fundamentals and discussed how the student will pace herself since she has extended time. Her plan is to use the standard amount of time on English, about 10-15 minutes extra on math, and then an hour each (usually 35 minutes) on reading/science. She knows she needs to be annotating the reading passages to understand them well and to read math questions carefully.

ACT Tutoring review by Delaney in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
We spent a lot of the time going over specific types of questions asked on the reading section and talked about being an active reader. We also did several practice science passages, focusing on key words, table headings, eliminating answers, skimming for information we need, etc. I timed him on the passages for pacing practice. I told him I thought he should practice reading and math

ACT Tutoring review by Patrick in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
Friday was the student's last session. Since we exhausted ACT prep, we began working out of another book. Prior to the session, he took a practice test, which he did quite well on. We spent the session going over the problems that challenged him. At the end of the session I could tell he was really starting gain the confidence that he needed for the test. If that confidence continues into Saturday morning, I have no doubt that he will have scored 30+ on the math portion of the ACT. He was an absolute pleasure to work with: his strong work ethic coupled with his innate intelligence will almost guarantee an improvement on his math score.

The student went over his English homework and did a portion of math. In English we discussed looking for redundancies and talked about proper comma placement/usage. As homework, I assigned an hour of reading, as well as the reading and science portions of test 3. During our next session, we will start working on lessons instead of book material.

ACT Tutoring review by Rose in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
The student and I reviewed the last two questions from her practice ACT English section and then looked at the English section she completed for homework. She showed great improvement from her practice test to her homework. After discussing her homework, she and I reviewed the passages from the reading section of her practice ACT, and I assigned the reading section of practice test 2 for homework.
