What is on the Washington DC bar exam?
The Washington DC bar has adopted the UBE or Universal Bar Exam. It's a standardized exam made by the National Conference of Board Examiners or NCBE, and it consists of three parts: the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE), and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT). The MEE and MPT are administered on Day 1 or the Bar exams, while the MBE is on Day 2. The exam costs $585 for first-time takers.
On the MBE, you'll face 200 multiple-choice questions that cover seven topics. These are contracts and sales, criminal law and procedure, evidence, constitutional law, civil procedure, real property, and torts. This is a 6-hour exam divided into two 3-hour morning and afternoon sessions. There are 175 questions that will be scored and 25 items that are pretest questions. The MBE makes up 50% of your score.
The MPT doesn't test you on any law. Instead, it has two 90-minute questions that will test your skills in performing lawyerly tasks such as writing a contract provision, a letter to a client, a witness examination plan, or a persuasive closing argument. This makes up 30% of your score.
On the MEE, you will have to write essay responses to six questions. Topics covered on this exam may include trusts and estates, uniform commercial code, conflicts of law, and corporations and LLCs just to name a few. You're given 3 hours to complete this test.
Additionally, you will have to pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) to practice law in Washington DC. When you study with Washington DC bar exam tutors, you can gain more insights into the topics, types of questions, and format of each exam in the UBE.
How can Washington DC bar exam tutors help me study for my test?
There are several benefits you can experience when you take advantage of the Washington DC bar exam tutoring we can find for you. First, you can study in one-on-one sessions where you can receive the full attention of your mentor. If you're reviewing questions for the MBE and want to clarify something about constitutional law, you don't have to wait to ask your question. You can get prompt and detailed answers, which can make your test prep experience more efficient.
Moreover, private lessons make it possible for you to study using a customized test prep plan. Unlike in traditional review courses where the teacher needs to follow a set curriculum, your private sessions with an experienced and dedicated tutor has a flexible lesson plan. If you feel you need extra help writing a will or a memorandum to a supervising attorney, your mentor can provide exercises on these topics so you can get more opportunities to practice and increase your skills in time for the test. You can choose to skim through topics you already know or skip them completely during your review.
The Washington DC bar exam training we set you up with can also be a great place to take entire practice tests on the different UBE exams. The best way to get a sense of the exam is to work on practice questions. Your mentor can simulate real conditions on exam day so that you can know what to expect once you take the test. If you find yourself not able to finish an exam within the allotted time limit, your instructor can provide suggestions that could help you become more efficient when taking the test.
Aside from providing personalized coaching on the content of the Bar exam, Washington DC bar exam tutors can also share test-taking techniques that could come in handy on exam day. For example, if you face a challenging multiple-choice question on the MBE, your tutor can train you on how to look for keywords or how to interpret words in a question so that you can have a clue as to what the question is really asking. If you're practicing how to write essay responses for the MEE, your mentor can train you on how to use outlines, headings, and subheadings in order to write a clear and well-structured argument. These test-taking techniques can be hard to discover when you're studying for the exam on your own.
