Tutoring review by Youcef in Issaquah, WA
Met with the student today. Topics Covered: 1. Reviewed chapter 10-6: Adding fractions; multiplying throughout the equation by the denominator LCM 2. Reviewed chapter 10-7: Finding the fraction of [something] done in 1 unit of time when an amount of [something] is done in a given n hours (explained concepts and taught butterfly rule). 3. Reviewed chapter 10-8: Mixed solutions of different concentrations to result in a desired amount of a third solution with a new given concentration. The student is excellent at this. 4. Reviewed chapter 10-9: Dividing polynomials by a monomial or a binomial. (Long division). She is also excellent at this. 5. Reviewed chapter 10-10: Complex Rational Expressions. Explained concepts and how to simplify multiplying by a quantity that's equal to 1, and which is a ration of the common LCM of the two denominators above and below the main ratio line. 6. Did review problems to touch to each concept we covered. I recommend that she do some practice problems. I encouraged her to call me if she gets stuck or does not understand something. The student is a true champion. She a quick thinker, a sponge for concepts. I am very proud of this student and consider it a privilege for me to work with her.

We reviewed basic strategy and the handful of math problems that the student either skipped or got wrong on her latest practice test. I advised her to get a good night's sleep on Friday night (as well as Thursday night, if possible) and wished her luck on Saturday's exam.

The student is in an accelerated 6th Grade program and receives most of his homework in the form of a wide range of worksheets. Most of the questions he had today were related to ratios. There were a set of problems that required him to find two numbers that met a series of criteria. The object was to introduce the criteria one at a time and adjust the numbers whenever the criteria failed. I tried to get him to think of them as puzzles. Toward the end, he was able to see them more as a challenge.

We reviewed the student's practice midterm and HW assignment for biostatistical methods. The material covers estimating the odds ratio and associated variances. Moreover, we derived the maximum likelihood estimates for fixed effects models parameters and asymptotic distributions. The assignment included interpreting the output from analyses run in SAS. The material is difficult, but the student is developing a better understanding.

Tutoring review by Adam in Issaquah, WA
Today, we worked on systems of functions and graphing inequalities. The students were both very engaged. Student 1 usually understands a concept once it has been explained to him once. He did most of the work with minimal assistance. Student 2 was slower to pick up on concepts, but by the end, she had learned the material.

Tutoring review by Lucas in Issaquah, WA
We went over solving quadratic equations using the methods of completing the square, factoring, and using the quadratic formula. The student did a great job with most of it, and she really has a strong grasp of algebraic manipulation as well as completing the square. The only part she seemed to struggle with was factoring, and I think that is due to her having trouble remembering which parts are supposed to add together and multiply together in the factored expression. Once we started going through, it she got the hang of everything very quickly.
