Tutoring review by Greg in Horn Lake, TN
The student has her second exam of the semester on Monday. We discussed her plan of action for preparing for the exam. She is allowed to bring one sheet of notes with her to the exam, so we went over the different formulas and definitions that she should include. I also suggested highlighting the key formulas that she thinks she'll use the most. That way she can quickly find them when the sheet is full of tiny handwritten notes. While she worked on writing her cheat sheet, I went through her textbook and picked out problems from each chapter and section that the exam covers for her to practice. She did several practice problems from the book highlighting common problems involving trig identities. She did quite well on these! We then moved on to doing review problems involving derivatives. She is quite strong at using the derivative rules. She did a few problems requiring her to find the equation of the line tangent to a function at a given value of x. She was able to work through several of these problems to solidify the method. We finished with talking over other things for her to review before the test, such as the practice exam and the solutions from the first exam.

Yesterday the student and I went over his chapter material. This included factoring monomials as well as finding the greatest common factors between monomials. We also did problems from chapter, which included multiplying out expressions with polynomials, or solving such expressions. The student did really well with both of these assignments, as we have gone over them in the past together. He told me that he feels much more confident going into his classes now.

For our first session, we clarified schedule and expectations. The student is taking geometry in school and needs help understanding concepts and staying on track. We discussed what has been covered in her class thus far, and she seems to have a solid grasp on the concepts. She only had a question on one homework problem, which we then duplicated with some other questions of a similar format to confirm she understands the concept and will be successful on similar questions in the future. She did just fine. We then discussed geometric congruency/ parallel/ perpendicular notations to ensure the student understands figure notations, as she mentioned they only briefly looked at it in class. She did well.
