Tutoring review by Alexandra in Hallandale Beach, FL
Today, the student and I focused on making sure that she is comfortable handling conversions within both the metric and English systems of measurement. We spent a lot of time with the whiteboard creating visuals for her to understand the basis of conversions. For example, if we draw a line to represent 1 km, that one kilometer can also be described as 1000 meters. From here, I introduced her to the concept of equivalence ratios and how to establish them. Thus, if she has a problem asking her to convert 48 inches to feet, she knows that her conversion factor is 12 inches = 1 foot so her equivalence ratios are 12 inches/1 foot and 1 foot/12 inches. We spent a good deal of time explaining how an equivalence ratio is essentially equal to "1" so that when we multiply the number we want to convert by one of these ratios, we are just multiplying by "1" (not actually changing the original number, but allowing us to express that value in different units). I lastly taught her how to choose the correct equivalence ratio to multiply by showing her how when units appear in the numerator and denominator they can be canceled out. We practiced numerous examples using this new system which seems far easier for her to follow. I will be providing her with additional examples to work on over the weekend.

We reviewed for the first half of the student's final. This included categorizing numbers, simplifying expressions, equations of lines, identifying functions and solving systems of equations. Besides needing a bit of review on some of the topics, the student seemed to have a good understanding of the material.

The student finished his math early so we focused on reading and reading comprehension. He is very good at using the knowledge that he already has to help him answer questions. I noticed that he read "better" (less stops and corrected himself more often) when we discussed what we saw on the page before we read it. I think getting him in the mindset to recall his background knowledge before he tackles reading will be extremely helpful. I was pleased that he was able to not only finish his homework but also have him finish a whole book. Lastly, when we covered the glossary and the reading comprehension questions he was able to reread those "tougher" works when he was reading a glossary. In the future we will try to make a habit of his to read the back of the glossary.

For these two sessions, the student did practice problems on finding volumes of solids through revolution. I summarized the general methods for washer/disk and cylindrical shell, and their differences. She had a good understanding of the material, and she was able to apply both methods to solve problems. In today's session, we also went over her first exam in class, and discussed again when some convergence/divergence tests should be used.
