Tutoring review by Rachel in Galena Park, TX
This evening we mainly focused on the ACT. This was one of the first times the student had really encountered the format of this test, and he was surprised to find that some of the math he had learned a long time ago. What makes these standardized test problems so difficult is the format and understanding what exact math they want the test-taker to do. We worked through much of a practice test and talked about strategies for approaching word problems and when to use a calculator to work most efficiently. This was his first day of school which is exciting, so we talked about what to expect from his new math class as well.

The student and I worked on least common multiples and greatest common factors. I noticed that she excels with number problems, but misunderstands the word problems. We took some extra time to 'set up' the word problems.

Tutoring review by Alonso in Galena Park, TX
The student has a test over polynomials on Friday so we reviewed how to factor them and how to use them in solving word problems. The problems mainly involved area and perimeter and finding values for each that satisfied various conditions. Aside from some mistakes in arithmetic, he has it under control. We talked about how to notice mistakes in algebra before reaching a final answer.

Tutoring review by Hsiao-harng in Galena Park, TX
We mainly covered arranging numbers from smallest to largest or vice versa. These numbers included whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. He had no problems arranging whole numbers but arranging fractions and decimals stumped him. I showed him some tips and tricks on dealing with fractions and decimals. After that, he was able to do it. Then, we practiced doing word problems.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Galena Park, TX
This session we specifically covered the English and math portion of the ACT. For the English section, the student struggled with vocabulary the most; many of the answers to the questions were foreign to him. For the math section, he struggled to solve math problems that required him to connect multiple concepts or equations. His attitude was overwhelmingly positive and he worked very hard. Some strategies for the English section were how to narrow our choices down to one or two answers, how to guess definitions of vocabulary based on Latin/ Greek roots, and how to properly use semicolons. For math, we covered basic trigonometry and how to calculate averages. I wanted him to finish taking the English and math practice tests we worked on. After we decided to "race" each other, he answered questions very thoughtfully.
