Test Prep Tutoring review by Robert in Spokane, WA
We did reading and writing today, again focusing on time management skills. She was initially hesitant to skip any problems, but I convinced her that skipping problems you have no idea how to answer is the correct way to go! Her results are gradually improving, and I am confident that by SAT time in March, she will be doing excellent.

During today's session, the student and I continued to work through practice problems taken from released exams. The student continues to perform well, but the true test will come once she is subjected to realistic time pressure in her upcoming mock exam. I look forward to intensifying our study and narrowing our focus to maximize her score in the coming weeks.

Fitting with the theme of the day, the student and I worked through three mock essay prompts today. Knowing that the student's feelings towards English, Literature and writing are less....enthusiastic in nature than the girls I had worked with earlier in the day, I thought it would be easier to get him started with a guiding hand. He and I worked in tandem on the first essay. After working with him to find the methods of organization that most benefit his writing style, I set him off to his own devices for the remainder of the 25 minutes. His essay was more or less at a 9th grade writing level. There was no tact to the presentation of his ideas, nor was there really an effort to flesh out said ideas. We worked again together on the last two; both times tried to find historical events or literature that he could connect with and expand on.

The student and I covered functions and plane geometry today. He had some trouble with the inverse functions, so I asked him to continue practicing those before next time. He should also retake the Diagnostic for next time.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Ian in Spokane, WA
I worked with the student on reviewing the harder questions. We looked through the SAT guide and focused on getting the "level 5" questions. Since the student is so close to the test, I advised that he spend his time focusing on those questions and learning to get the hardest questions right. He has definitely boosted his score a lot, which is encouraging.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Jennifer in Spokane, WA
The student will be applying for a week long program this summer, and the application naturally includes two essays that need to be sent in, along with all the other academic stuff. I worked on helping him think of what facts to write about for each of the essays. The main difference between this type of essay and the one on the SAT is that for this one he has all the time in the world to go back and edit, add to, subtract from, or change its theme completely before the essay itself is due. I used the time we had in this session to teach him some writing skills that should not only help him for these essays, but for all other writing as well. I specifically told him to go into detail in the sentences he will use. I told him that a goal he should have in writing is to keep the reader wanting to read more, and not to bore him/her with generic sentences that don't really have much to say about anything. When he came up with a sentence he wanted to use, I would ask him things like exactly where did that happen, or can you describe what that day was like, or what adjective can you use to describe how you and your friends feel. He was then able to make his sentences fuller and more interesting to read. I gave him some page numbers in his SAT book where it talks about these types of writing skills, so that he can look it over this week as he continues to write these two essays. I will again edit what he has written during next week's session. Finally, he received the scores from the last SAT he took, so I looked at them at the end of the session. The one section that he seemed to do the worst on was the critical reading. I again told him to go ahead and skip any questions that he was unsure of, but he told me that he had felt comfortable with all the answers he put down. I gave him a few pages of critical reading questions for him to answer as homework, so that I can again help him understand the answers that the SAT is looking for.
