I earned my bachelor's degree in psychology from Northern Arizona University and my master's degree in psychology with an emphasis in neuroscience from San Diego State University. I have been a teaching assistant for undergraduates and have clinical experience working with children and teenagers, both typically developing and with autism spectrum disorder. The subjects I tutor are varied, but I focus on statistics and mathematics through pre-calculus along with test preparation and essay writing. I began my academic journey at community college where I identified how important small class sizes and individualized attention in math and science was to my success in college. I then transferred to a large university in Southern California where I was challenged by large class sizes and no academic support. It was during that time that I had to seek out outside resources to pass my courses. I have been teaching and tutoring mathematics in some capacity for over 30 years. I moved to Virginia about a year and a half ago after being a Californian for most of my adult life. I received a Bachelor's Degree and teaching credential in English from San Diego State University and went on to teach 7th and 8th grade language arts in a diverse public school. I then moved north to beautiful Sonoma County where I completed a Master's degree in English literature. During my time as a graduate student, I began teaching freshman composition classes and worked with small groups of beginning writers, many of whom were the first in their family to attend college. I stayed on as an adjunct instructor teaching courses that focused on expository writing, analytical reading, research, and oral communication skills. Over the course of my 15 year career, I have worked with students from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels, including many students with unique language or learning needs. I have served as an adviser and scorer/rater for numerous written assessment tests (including district and state assessments from elementary through high school, and college entrance and exit exams), and am very familiar with the type of analytical and persuasive writing prompts that students are asked to tackle for such assessments. My name is Ronnie Cravens I graduated from San Diego State University with a BA in International Business with an Emphasis in Italian and Western Europe. During my time at SDSU I was able to study abroad for a semester at the University of Bocconi in Milan, Italy. I completed my undergraduate degree in biology in 2022, and am currently at the end of my master's program studying animal behavior. Having gone through the U.S. school and college system myself, including standardized testing and higher-level AP/IB classes, I am well equipped to help you meet your academic goals!

I am a graduate of University of Nevada Las Vegas. I received my Masters of Education in Special Education. Since graduation, I have taught for the Clark County School district as a Cross Categorial Special Education Teacher, and as a Short and Long Term Substitute as of 2004. I also tutored during this time. While teaching for the school district as a Special Education teacher I spent time in the resource room and the general education settings, main streaming special needs students from the resource room to the general education room. And in the general education classroom I would co-teach with the general education teacher. This model of teaching is very beneficial for all students and teachers in the classroom. I teach and tutor a broad range of subjects, however the subject I enjoy teaching the most is math. Mostly due to it being a subject that is not gray, you either got the answer correct or you did not and it helps to teach logic. Over the years while tutoring and teaching I would design and implement lesson plans for several tutored students ranging from ages 8 to 18 if not designed and implemented lesson plans for five high school resource/general classroom math classes. I also would organize, track and implement study materials for all my students daily. My teaching philosophy is to be thorough, versatile and try multiple techniques so to help students find their own learning style. Each student is unique in the way they learn and I feel I need to tailor teaching strategies and techniques to the students needs. When I'm not teaching I spend my time caring for my family if not enjoying the things that interest me such as health and travel. Or one of the many hobbies I have like, writing, reading, art and cooking.

As a college student, I understand what it takes to excel in education. I enjoy tutoring others because I was once was a young child being tutored by many people for subjects in math and language arts. I personally excel in tutoring elementary and middle school math, as well as elementary and middle school language arts. I am also knowledgeable in a portion of algebra based physics.

I am fascinated by all things science, and I especially have a passion for math and physics. I earned a B.S. in both General Physics and Applied Math from San Diego State University and have a very enthusiastic and innovative outlook on learning. I'm looking to earn my Ph.D. in Physics starting in the Fall of 2015 and have been tutoring for five years at all levels. I love both math and physics and can tutor a range of math subjects as well as physics; I especially enjoy tutoring high school physics. Tutoring should be a two way street of communication and aimed at helping the student in the best way possible, since each student is unique. I feel that building a professional relationship in which the student is fully comfortable with the tutor builds the best foundation for learning, and my philosophy supports mutual respect. I like to employ a back and forth of questions that triggers the student to learn intrinsically, leading to higher retention rather than merely providing the answers. My teaching philosophy also focuses on test taking strategies and reasoning that compliments the subject leading to a very well rounded individual. I didn't always have the most motivating and passionate teachers, so it took time for me to discover my passion on my own. Hopefully as a tutor I can be the inspiration for young students to pursue the sciences early on in their careers.

I began my love for music at a young age, when my mother enrolled me in violin lessons. The search for a voice that fit my inner music was long, but worthy. I dabbled in other string and woodwind instruments throughout my adolescence, but settled on the bassoon upon beginning high school. I taught myself how to play the bassoon initially, but thrived under the direction of Valentin Martchev at San Diego State University, where I completed my undergraduate degree in Bassoon Performance. I am currently in my final year of my master's degree at Boston University, studying with Valentin's former teacher, Nancy Goeres. I am comfortable teaching all age ranges and beginner to intermediate experience levels, and have had significant experience doing so throughout the years with high schoolers, colleagues in college, and most recently grade schoolers. Though my passion is bassoon pedagogy, I am also fascinated by music theory, and have taken several extra years of it throughout my education. I offer a sensitive but motivated approach, and emphasize quality instruction and rehearsal over quantity. I look forward to connecting with new students, whether they be bassoonists or theorists!

My intention is to engage students as fully as possible through a variety of activities, always trying for 80% student production, 20% teacher talk. I get to know students, their interests, and why they want to study English more. Then I build lessons to meet their goals. I have been teaching English for over 25 years, both in university programs and language schools. What I love about tutoring is helping students meet their goals by customizing lessons.
