I am a Masters student with a 3.9 GPA studying Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I have taken many years of statistics, both at the undergraduate and the graduate level, and have years of tutoring experience. As a high schooler, I independently tutored a young girl in both reading and math for several years. Separately, I also tutored two young women for whom English was a second language.In my undergraduate career at UCSD, I was a teaching assistant for an upper division psychology course. As part of my graduate assistantship, I also assist or instruct (depending on the semester) for undergraduate statistics. Cynthia is an energetic and passionate educator, who has had a love for teaching since she was young. She attended Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, where she earned a B.A. in History and a B.A. in English and American Literature. There she also completed a History Teacher education program for grades 5-12. Cynthia has taught history and ESL, and tutored students in many subjects and for tests such as the SAT, ACT, and AP exams. I'm a lifelong student with a B.A. from San Diego State University where I studied Psychology and electro-acoustic music. I'm hoping to return to school next fall to pursue a Master's in counseling psychology with an emphasis in creative arts therapy. I've been teaching ballet since I was 18, and have spent the past two years shifting towards educational tutoring through my profession. I moved to Virginia about a year and a half ago after being a Californian for most of my adult life. I received a Bachelor's Degree and teaching credential in English from San Diego State University and went on to teach 7th and 8th grade language arts in a diverse public school. I then moved north to beautiful Sonoma County where I completed a Master's degree in English literature. During my time as a graduate student, I began teaching freshman composition classes and worked with small groups of beginning writers, many of whom were the first in their family to attend college. I stayed on as an adjunct instructor teaching courses that focused on expository writing, analytical reading, research, and oral communication skills. Over the course of my 15 year career, I have worked with students from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels, including many students with unique language or learning needs. I have served as an adviser and scorer/rater for numerous written assessment tests (including district and state assessments from elementary through high school, and college entrance and exit exams), and am very familiar with the type of analytical and persuasive writing prompts that students are asked to tackle for such assessments. Despite my extensive experience with argumentation and expository texts, my first love continues to be fiction and poetry, and I would jump enthusiastically at the chance to work with students in the world of literature and creative writing. I began my love for music at a young age, when my mother enrolled me in violin lessons. The search for a voice that fit my inner music was long, but worthy. I dabbled in other string and woodwind instruments throughout my adolescence, but settled on the bassoon upon beginning high school. I taught myself how to play the bassoon initially, but thrived under the direction of Valentin Martchev at San Diego State University, where I completed my undergraduate degree in Bassoon Performance. I am currently in my final year of my master's degree at Boston University, studying with Valentin's former teacher, Nancy Goeres. I am comfortable teaching all age ranges and beginner to intermediate experience levels, and have had significant experience doing so throughout the years with high schoolers, colleagues in college, and most recently grade schoolers. Though my passion is bassoon pedagogy, I am also fascinated by music theory, and have taken several extra years of it throughout my education. I offer a sensitive but motivated approach, and emphasize quality instruction and rehearsal over quantity. I look forward to connecting with new students, whether they be bassoonists or theorists!

I have been teaching since 2004. I currently hold two credentials in Education. The first is a multiple subject credential to teach all subject in grades K-8; the second is a mild/moderate special education credential with an emphasis in dual language learners. I am currently attending San Diego State university as I pursue my Masters in education. I am passionate about helping students learn. I am willing to think outside the box, and I look for ways to help students so that their "light bulb" comes on. I love using technology, manipulatives, and real life examples in order to help make connections in all subject ares. My primary goal is to help students learn what they need in order to be successful.

I am fascinated by all things science, and I especially have a passion for math and physics. I earned a B.S. in both General Physics and Applied Math from San Diego State University and have a very enthusiastic and innovative outlook on learning. I'm looking to earn my Ph.D. in Physics starting in the Fall of 2015 and have been tutoring for five years at all levels. I love both math and physics and can tutor a range of math subjects as well as physics; I especially enjoy tutoring high school physics. Tutoring should be a two way street of communication and aimed at helping the student in the best way possible, since each student is unique. I feel that building a professional relationship in which the student is fully comfortable with the tutor builds the best foundation for learning, and my philosophy supports mutual respect. I like to employ a back and forth of questions that triggers the student to learn intrinsically, leading to higher retention rather than merely providing the answers. My teaching philosophy also focuses on test taking strategies and reasoning that compliments the subject leading to a very well rounded individual. I didn't always have the most motivating and passionate teachers, so it took time for me to discover my passion on my own. Hopefully as a tutor I can be the inspiration for young students to pursue the sciences early on in their careers.
