Hello! My name is Matthew, I'm an incoming junior at Lipscomb University in Nashville majoring in Mathematics and Psychology, and I specialize in tutoring students in mathematics. I worked at Mathnasium Math Learning Center in high school, where I tutored students ranging from 1st-12th grade, so I feel comfortable tutoring students of any age! I was homeschooled all through highschool, and like to use my experience of teaching myself to help other students become more independent in their own studies! I'm excited to hear from you and to help you in any way that I can!

I am a former high school math teacher with 9 years classroom teaching experience as well as 3 years of individual tutoring experience. I have a physics teaching degree with a minor in math from Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. I have a masters in education from Bethel University in McKenzie, TN. I have taught in 3 very different school settings throughout my career. I have taught algebra 1, algebra 2, integrated math 1, 2, and 3, IB math, and physics. I believe that all students CAN be successful in math and my goal is to help them realize their learning potential. My favorite thing about teaching/tutoring is when a student finally makes a connection and understands something that they previously were confused about. Seeing the lightbulb turn on and them begin to feel confident in their math abilities is why I do what I do.

My 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Barnett, used many techniques years before they became popular. She used Study Buddies and small groups in order to ensure that her students learned the material they were assigned. In 2006, I was selected as a Walmart Teacher of the Year. I was presented a $1,000.00 check to purchase supplies for my students. I began tutoring as a senior in high school with a fifth-grade student at a local elementary school. After loving the experience, I continued spending my time mentoring in college through a program called Reading Friends. After graduating college, I joined Teach for America and began teaching at a middle school in Nashville. Last year I taught Social Studies, and this year I moved into teaching literacy. I will continue in this position next year as well. Not only do I have extensive experience tutoring and mentoring, but I also have experience that is varied. Having graduated from Lipscomb University with my bachelor's in Computer and Electrical Engineering, I have several years of experience studying and implementing engineering and mathematics concepts. While in college, I worked with students in various subjects, including physics, college algebra, calculus, chemistry, and engineering-specific courses. I love to tutor mathematics and physics, for it is in these subjects that the foundation of engineering is built upon. I also enjoy teaching problem solving to students! I have a passion for helping others understand material that is difficult or foreign to them, and I work hard to try and make the time I have with students meaningful and effective. I am currently a graduate student at Vanderbilt University pursuing my PhD in Electrical Engineering. My hobbies include singing, gardening, playing piano, and computers/robotics.

I have found that I actively try to surround myself with any and all things music. From various bands, performance opportunities, teaching music lessons and private theory tutoring. I am also actively studying music at the college level and have found a love for any and all things music. I hope to help students understand music theory and realize its usefulness. It is so relevant in classic and modern music. All we need to do is look through the correct lens to realize its potential and I hope to provide that lens.
