Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Science Tutoring review by John in Orlando, FL
I prepared a typed summary of main ideas and some of the main equations for this course, and the student and I discussed this in some depth. We are trying to strategize the questions which will be on the exam. I think it will concentrate on molecular orbitals, absorption spectra, possibly something on electronic spin or magnetic spin resonance, and definitely some questions about fluorescence and/or phosphorescence. The various vibronic states will show up, possibly in the form of having the student sketch a graph of dissociation energy of, for example, HCl vs. Dcl, or something similar. We mainly spent the time going over the notes from the class and a few old exam questions.

During this past session, the student and I went through another practice exam for his upcoming 8th grade science assessment test after we finished the short answer section from the previous test we worked on. While going over the multiple choice, we made sure to cover all of his content weak points based on the questions he was having the most trouble with. Afterwards, he finished most of the remaining multiple choice questions on his own and then we went over them together to make sure he understood why each correct answer was right. Overall, he did very well on this most recent exam.

During this session, I finished preparing the student for her science test. We finished making sure that she had reviewed all of the vocabulary and concepts listed on her review sheet, using this as a springboard for any questions that she had. I also quizzed her using the flash cards that she had made and reviewed during the previous session. Finally, I gave her a few more practice proportion problems that may appear on her science test.

Science Tutoring review by Lauren in Orlando, FL
The student and I spent the entire session reviewing science notes. Her upcoming end-of-year exam will cover all material since the beginning of the school year. We reviewed the endocrine and nervous systems, evolution/natural selection, genetics/DNA, and briefly began discussing mechanics (force, work, etc.). The student is to review these notes again, to make sure she understood everything we discussed. We plan to meet again on Thursday, 05/29 at 6:30 pm.

Science Tutoring review by Aaron in Orlando, FL
The student and I worked mainly on Science. The topic was electricity and the movement of charged particles. We discussed how matter usually has a balance of positive and negative charges, but, in the case of a piece of wool rubbing a balloon, the negative charges from the wool move to the balloon, creating static electricity. Once we finished science, we did a bit of Social Studies. The topic included the stock market crash in the 20s which led to the Great Depression. We worked on a Cause and Effect sheet, with questions like: Cause - there is a great demand for a particular product that is in short supply; the Effect - the price of that product would go up.

Science Tutoring review by Christine in Orlando, FL
We did a portion of the experiment on parallax I prepared for the student, and the rest was assigned as homework. I think I will introduce him to more artsy experiments instead of just math-based experiments next time.
