Thanks to one-on-one help in middle and high school, I not only achieved stronger grades/test scores, but gained the confidence I will continue to use even beyond graduate school. I hope to give others the same invaluable tool set!... The ways I've always preferred to learn myself are typically the ways I teach. Once it seems like a student has a pretty strong understanding of a subject, I like to play competitive or timed games. It...

...experiences to help mentees on a more intrinsic level. This key difference necessitates mentors to make strong personal connections with their mentees, calling upon knowledge learned from different aspects of life. Unlike specialized teaching, this can include but is not limited to various areas of subject knowledge. In other words, teachers teach exclusively while mentors teach inclusively. If we see the two—teacher and mentor—as opposite ends of a spectrum, I posit a tutor must fall...

ASPIRE Tutoring FAQ
If your student attends a school with the ACT Aspire program, you can feel confident that their academic growth is being assessed for the purpose of adjusting learning methods and goals from grade 3 through early high school. The program basically prepares students to be successful on the ACT they will take in their junior or senior year in high school from the time they're in early elementary school. If your student has recently received a report outlining their periodic or summative assessment results, Varsity Tutors can help connect you with Aspire tutoring to help your child fill in any learning gaps.
Aspire tutoring can benefit your child in any or all of the subjects tested, including:
English
Math
Reading
Science
Writing
Working with an Aspire tutor is a bit different than working with tutors on other assessments, because rather than preparing your child to "pass" the Aspire, their private tutor will receive the results of the exam they have already taken, and help them improve in the areas where they have scored lower. The ACT Aspire connects your student's performance to readiness benchmarks, which have been determined after years of study, and is quite accurate at predicting your child's score on the ACT. Therefore, it is to your advantage to have your child take advantage of Aspire tutoring if they fall behind at any point. Its continuous nature means that if a student is a little behind one year, they may fall more behind the next year if they don't get help. Schools can only provide so much assistance, and if your student happens to be struggling in an area, they may not get the extra help they need to improve in that area.
The great benefit of studying with a knowledgeable Aspire tutor is their ability to customize each study session based on the results of your student's latest assessment, and to adjust each study session to reflect their growth between sessions. So if your child has mastered their times tables, there's no need to spend more time studying them, though their tutor may test the student to aid in retention. If your child needs more time to master reading comprehension, their tutor can spend that kind of time with them. Recent ASPIRE Tutoring Session Notes
He took a practice English test. He got as far in the time allotted as he did on the last test, but he was much more accurate than last time (90% correct). I then gave him the appropriate amount of time to finish the test, and he was able to do it in the correct amount of time.
We went over the student's first practice test, covering the entirety of the English, Math, and Science sections. We covered each wrong answer and I explained the things to look out for and different ways to approach the problems that might make some of the harder math ones less intimidating.
The student did a whole practice test (minus essay) for today, so we went over 2 math sections and 1 reading. We explored the best way to solve the problems; the student picked up pretty quickly. He will do 1 math, 1 reading, 1 writing, and the essay from last time. I will print out some good essay examples for him for next time.
The student and I went over the homework that she completed for last week. We also went over a long two passage critical reading passage and talked about each question individually. We then completed a grammar section where she was able to select the word that was incorrect (if any). She is doing very well.
The student and I finally finished up the practice exam we had started several sessions ago. The next time we meet, we plan to study from SAT vocabulary flashcards that will not only help him in the vocabulary section, but also in the critical reading sections as well, as the passages and the answer choices contain big words that can take away from the overall meaning if one does not know what they exactly mean.
Today we discussed the overall format of the SAT and the college application process in the U.S. I advised her to purchase flash cards to study SAT vocabulary and she said she would. I assigned her to complete two more sections of the practice test we were working on so we could go over it tomorrow.
