If you have a student preparing for the SSAT, Varsity Tutors can set them up with qualified Nashville SSAT preparation that offers a more detailed review than they might be able to get on their own. The Secondary School Admission Test, or SSAT, is a standardized test used by admissions counselors to gauge how students will perform in the classroom. Admissions into private and independent schools can be competitive, meaning that a high score on the SSAT could help give your child a leg up in the application process.

All students have different learning styles that require different approaches to properly engage and motivate them. In order to provide maximum flexibility, Varsity Tutors offers learners both online courses and private tutoring. Participating in a Nashville SSAT prep course mimics traditional classroom learning by placing students in a virtual classroom led by a qualified instructor and populated with eager peers. If your student would prefer a more personalized learning experience, studying with a Nashville tutor affords them one-on-one instruction that can be catered directly to their needs.

What can Nashville SSAT prep help my student review?

The SSAT measures the basic verbal, math, and reading skills students need to succeed in private and independent schools. The test gives an equitable means to assess and compare applicants, and your student will complete one of three separate levels of the test depending on his or her age. These levels are Elementary, Middle, and Upper. The Experimental and Writing Sample sections are unscored across all levels of the SSAT. However, the Writing Sample will be sent to prospective schools, so your student can use it as an opportunity to illustrate their writing and creativity skills. It is important to note that throughout the Quantitative portion at any level, the use of a calculator is not allowed. Here we will take a more in-depth look at each level of the SSAT to give you a better idea of what your student can expect to encounter on the test.

The Upper Level of the SSAT is designed for students between eighth and 11th grade applying for admissions into an independent or private school the subsequent year. Your student can expect to encounter a Writing Sample where they must construct a story or essay in response to one of two prompts. Next, the two Quantitative sections test their understanding of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. Each of these two sections contains 25 questions. After this section is the 40 question Reading section where they will be asked to interpret the meaning and extract information from literary fiction and scholarly passages. Finally, the 60 question Verbal section will measure their English vocabulary skills by testing their knowledge of synonyms, analogies, and word roots, among other things.

The Middle Level of the SSAT is intended for students finishing fifth, sixth, or seventh grade and looking to attend an independent middle school the next school year. The Writing Sample asks students to create a story based on one of two creative prompts provided. They will have 25 minutes to organize a grammatically correct written piece. Next, they will encounter two different quantitative sections. Each section is made up of 25 questions and focuses on arithmetic, elementary algebra, and geometry. Following the Quantitative section, students will complete a Reading section that asks them to interpret meaning from narrative and argumentative passages by extracting the main ideas and arguments of the text. Finally, the 60 question Verbal section will measure the fluency and depth of their knowledge of English by testing them on concepts such as synonyms, analogies, and parts of speech, among other things.

The Elementary Level of the SSAT is intended for third-grade students applying to an independent school for fourth grade, and for fourth-grade students applying to an independent school for fifth grade. Students will be asked to complete four sections, including Quantitative, Verbal, Reading, and Writing Sample. The Writing Sample allows students to express their creativity by creating a story with a beginning, middle, and end. There is also an Experimental section that is unscored and contains mixed content questions. The content from the different sections will be tailored around the student's age range and education level. Including the Writing Sample, this level of the SSAT is made up of 89 questions, and each student has a total of one hour and 45 minutes to complete them all.
