Literature Tutoring review by John in Tucson, AZ
The student continues to be a pleasure to work with. She comes to sessions well-prepared and well-organized and looks to me primarily to clear up questions with technical issues like how to solve problems or how abstract concepts like the Central Limit Theorem relate to the concrete problems.

Literature Tutoring review by Martina-Alexandra in Tucson, AZ
The student and I began her reading detective B1 book and completed the first 7 pages, learning about figurative language, literary devices, differentiating fact and opinion, and using context clues to understand the meaning of words and sentences. I gave her pages 8-14 for homework. We also started on the easy grammar book, which she had started previously, and completed day 29 and 30. I gave her days 31 and 32 to complete as homework. She did well this session! She continues to demonstrate how bright she is, already understanding many of the concepts we've covered. She had a bit of trouble with reading comprehension in her reading detective exercises, but time and practice should solve this.

Literature Tutoring review by Abigail in Tucson, AZ
This week, the student and I continued our discussion of verb tenses. We began with a review of the present, present progressive, past, past progressive, and future tense. When I was confident that he understood how to form and recognize these tenses, we moved on to introducing the present perfect and past perfect tenses. The perfect tenses can be a bit hard to grasp conceptually. To help him get his head around this topic, I used a drawing of a time line to graphically represent the differences between the simple, progressive, and perfect tenses. After we had talked through some examples, he worked on some exercises in which he had to choose the correct form of a verb, identify verb tenses, and compose his own sentences. The student seems much more comfortable working with verb forms than he was with the other topics we had covered in the past. It seems to me that he is steadily improving in grammar, and I believe that his grade will reflect his progress.

The student wanted help understanding and analyzing a poem that he read for class. He expects to have an in class writing assignment on the poem this week and he wanted to be sure he understood it well. We read the poem together and analyzed its meaning. I helped him understand vocabulary he was unsure of as well as the literary elements used by the author. We also discussed the symbolism and figurative language used. We discussed the theme of the poem as well. He took notes and annotated the poem. I was pleased that he took the initiative to prepare in advance for the upcoming writing assignment.

Literature Tutoring review by Maitri in Tucson, AZ
The student and I covered both English and History in this session. He had a grammar assignment that we worked on which focused on learning how to write compound and complex sentences using example sentences from The Outsiders, the novel that he is reading in class. We also worked on studying for his history exam that he is retaking on Wednesday afternoon, and he showed progress since our first session in absorbing the information. He had a lot of homework to manage so all things considered, he did great. We planned to meet again on Thursday afternoon.

The student and I continued with "The Jabberwocky," defining the words Carroll invented. From there, we looked at "The Lord of the Rings," and summarized the story so far according to the maps provided in the back of the book.
