Las Vegas Latin Tutoring FAQ

Varsity Tutors can find a patient and knowledgeable Las Vegas Latin tutor who can provide the support you or your student needs in learning the language. Whether you are just starting to learn or already have intermediate-level knowledge of Latin, private Las Vegas Latin tutoring has several advantages that can benefit your studies.

How can a Las Vegas Latin tutor near me help me work towards fluency?

Latin is the precursor of modern Romance languages such as Italian, Romanian, Spanish, and French. It's referred to as a "dead" language since it no longer represents the spoken language of a community, but it's still a useful language to know especially if you are working in fields like law, medical and scientific research, and theology. It can also be useful if you are learning any of the other Romance languages.

English speakers can have an easier time learning Latin since many English words originate from it. However, there are certain aspects that are still very challenging such as the use of gendered nouns, a variety of word orders, and an adjective-noun agreement. If you get stumped by any of these topics in Latin, having access to Las Vegas Latin tutors can really be a huge help. Whenever you have questions, you can ask them directly to your teacher during your one-on-one lessons and get immediate and relevant answers. Since there are no other students to compete with, you can have the full attention of your teacher when studying in private sessions.

Las Vegas Latin tutoring can be a great way to address your learning gaps and core difficulties faster since your instructor can create a customized study plan for you. If you already have a good knowledge of masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns but need to work on your verb conjugations, you and your teacher can dedicate more lesson time working on verb conjugation exercises and skip noun genders. This way, unlike in regular classroom lessons, you can efficiently use your valuable study time. There's no need to wait for the rest of the class to finish each topic before you study it. You can study at your own pace and your instructor can spend as much time as necessary to help you understand a topic.

We know that different students learn in different ways. Your Las Vegas Latin tutor can help determine your learning style and use teaching methods that leverage how you best learn new concepts. For example, if you or your student is a visual learner, your instructor can combine text material and flashcards with pictures to help you memorize new vocabulary. He or she can also use colored mind maps to help you understand inflection or the endings of words in Latin that makes it possible for us to know the meaning of a sentence. By using teaching methods that match your learning style, you can have a more effective and enjoyable experience learning Latin. This personalized approach can be hard to match in a classroom set-up with other students.

Need more practice with Latin conversation? Las Vegas Latin tutors can be your speaking partners. They can help you work on your pronunciation so you can become more confident with your speaking skills. One-on-one sessions are also a good way to get speaking practice if you're shy speaking in front of other students.

How can I fit time with Las Vegas Latin tutors into my schedule?

Studying Latin through private instruction provides more flexibility than traditional language courses. You just need to let us know your preferred schedule and we do our best to find you an experienced and qualified teacher who can meet you at your convenient time. This flexibility in scheduling makes it easier for students to start and keep on going with their language studies.

Las Vegas Latin tutoring can be done as online or in-person lessons. If you prefer online lessons, you just need a reliable internet connection and compatible laptop, tablet, or mobile device to log into our Live Learning Platform. You'll use the platform's video chat feature to communicate with your teacher. There's also a virtual whiteboard that your instructor can use to write important points about Latin such as fixed expressions, essential vocabulary, and grammar and sentence structure. You can also conveniently watch recordings of your previous lessons if you need to review any topic that might have slipped your attention or memory. Every aspect of the platform has been designed to make sure you have an easy time following the lessons. With online lessons, you can work on your Latin language skills without worrying about disrupting your daily routine or adding an extra commute in your busy schedule.

If you're the type who prefers face-to-face lessons, you can attend in-person private instruction. This also has the convenience and flexibility of the online lessons as it allows you to choose what time and where you would like to meet your teacher. You can attend lessons from home, a nearby coffee shop, or at public libraries in your area such as the Sahara West Library or the Centennial Hills Library.

There are also students who like to experience the unique benefits of both private instruction and online courses, so they combine both. We offer online Latin courses that let you study in a collaborative learning environment with other Latin learners. There are several course times within the day, and you can choose a section that fits your schedule. New sections start every month, and there are also weekend courses if you cannot attend weekday lessons.

Recent Las Vegas Latin Tutoring Session Notes

Latin Tutoring review by Andrew in Las Vegas, NV
We devoted most of today's session to some more English-to-Latin translation sentences for the student's class. Several of the sentences focused on a couple different ways of ordering someone to do something in Latin, where a different grammatical construction is required depending on which verb you use to say "order". A pair of the sentences also played off the different meanings of "return" in English, where one sentence had someone returning something to someone, while the other sentence had someone returning to a location. The two constructions require different word choices in Latin. As we went through these sentences, I helped him navigate through these difficulties. Then, we did some Latin-to-English practice sentences, using the verb possum with adverbial accusatives. It took some work for him to get these constructions down but the repetitiveness of the exercises helped facilitate learning.

We focused on Ablative Absolutes and participles, but did somewhat of a general review to make sure all the basic information is fresh in the student's head. We covered declension endings, cases, relative pronouns, ablative absolutes, participles, and verbs.

Latin Tutoring review by Stephen in Las Vegas, NV
We started off the first session by assessing the material that she already knew. Once I knew that she had been working on the first declension and first conjugation for verbs, I took a few practice sentences from a book that I had brought and we delved into the grammar for each word to produce a faithful translation. The three main focuses were: pronunciation, grammar, and translation of the text. The student made good progress in understanding of the first declension and the first conjugation

Latin Tutoring review by Sean in Las Vegas, NV
Today the student and I began by looking at I-stem nouns from the 3rd declension, learning how to identify and decline them. After this he noted that he needed help understanding conjunctions. We spent the rest of the session translating passages from his textbook, paying special attention to the different conjunctions and how they affect various subordinate clauses. His biggest difficulty appears to be keeping their definitions straight; once the student looks up or recalls the meaning of a conjunction, he is able to figure out how it works in the sentence. We discussed that next time I will bring a list of conjunctions and other short Latin words (these also give him trouble) to work on. Becoming more comfortable with these words should help him have an easier time translating complex sentences with subordinate clauses. We spent a few minutes at the end of the session previewing what the student thinks they will work on in class next week, the third conjugation.
