We practiced writing sentences on topics that interested him. We started with a postcard painting. He wrote about a waterfall. He also shared with me his interest in cricket, and he wrote sentences explaining the rules of cricket. We corrected his spelling. He made fewer mistakes about this than during our last session. He is enthusiastic about writing. He was given two homework assignments for the weekend, to write 5 sentences in 10 minutes about the World Cup on Saturday, and 7 sentences in 15 minutes about video games on Sunday. He'll take pictures of the writing and email it to me over the weekend.

At this session we tried a new exercise where he and I trade off reading paragraphs of a news article and I quiz him for content and vocabulary at the end. Since he enjoys being up on current events in science and technology, we read two articles, one on the discovery of water below the surface of one of Jupiter's moons and another on the recent public demonstration of a prototype for a flying car. The student correctly identified words like "corroborate" and "flourish," and engaged with the articles with his own intelligent commentary. We continued on to some more vocabulary quizzes, where he is excelling at recognizing less common words like "uncouth," "unabated," and "succumb."

This 1.5 hour session highlighted the area of essay building for the student's English class. The student and the tutor developed the thesis, hook, and themes for his essay on "Snowflower and the Secret Fan"ù. The student and tutor reviewed the expectations for this essay built on the outline given by the student's English teacher. The student asked questions about the best way to present information in the essay. The tutor offered suggestions for re-arranging information to make the essay more clear and concise. Over the course of the session the student was able to develop- the basic outline for his essay including primary themes of the novel.

This was a great session. Today we covered semicolons, did two worksheets to practice paragraph correction, and started working on irregular verbs. We discussed the oxford comma, and how to set off a name into a sentence using two commas. We talked a little bit about the word frugal, which is a false cognate between English and, so it was a little confusing in one of the paragraph correction worksheets. We also looked at the distinction between later and latter, and talked about the words ubiquity, lit (not lighted), and chose vs. choose. I found a good list of irregular verbs in all of their conjugations from a website, which is also providing a few really useful worksheets on irregular verb practice. We will be continuing work on paragraph correction and irregular verbs next time. Our next session will be Saturday.

The student took his AP Spanish test on Thursday, so we spent the majority of this session working through the draft of his paper for English. He made some revisions, which we reviewed together. I also gave him feedback for ways to make his arguments stronger and his paper longer (he's at about 3 pages right now, and it needs to be at least six): we discussed ways to search for new sources, and also ways to more clearly connect his evidence to his thesis. We also brainstormed possible additional main points he could add. If the student can manage his time between now and May 15 to complete the paper and not leave all the remaining work until Thursday night, I think he will be in good shape, as he has very good ideas for additions to the paper that he hasn't written down yet.
