What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

The student came to the session with a handout from his English teacher containing short answer questions on a couple of chapters from To Kill a Mockingbird. He and I worked through the questions together. I encouraged him to look at the section of text that each question referred to and re-read in order to understand the context of the quotes in question. I offered him feedback as he wrote short answers to each question in the packet. We also discussed the concepts of hypocrisy and irony as they are used in the novel.

English Tutoring review by Stacy in Norman, OK
The first visit with the family was for an assessment. They work well together. I listened to each of the children to learn what they are studying, what they consider their best/favorite, as well as the most challenging courses. I reviewed their coursework, books, and tests they had available to assess their levels. I gave them helpful hints to ask their teachers. I believe we will work well together. They expressed upon leaving that they felt I was a "real" tutor.

English Tutoring review by Megan in Norman, OK
Today, we worked on assessment exam preparation. The student said he specifically wanted practice with analogies and verbal skills. We defined what an analogy is, and then practiced creating bridges to show relationships between the words, and what type of comparison was being made between the two. We then used the same process to select the best answer. He did really well in selecting the strongest answer. We also worked on word attack strategies to improve his vocabulary. We reviewed common prefixes, suffixes, and root words, and practiced using context clues and breaking down of words to discover definitions or recognize synonyms. We next need to practice with higher level vocabulary where word attack strategies will not work. Example: words like emulate, trite, etc. There are some words that he will just need to know, so I'm going to create fluency vocabulary games to practice with these.

English Tutoring review by Shaneureka in Norman, OK
During this session, we discussed the writing process while focusing on editing and revising the story we wrote last time. We used a narrative writing checklist to determine what edits to make to the student's paper. For homework, I asked him to continue to work on his story. During our next session, we will focus on using imagery to set the scene and mood of the story.

English Tutoring review by Goke in Norman, OK
The student read three passages. She then answered questions about the passages. She has strong reading comprehension skills. She successfully answered the questions about what was read. She also displayed a businesslike attitude towards the material covered. The passages were about how energy is transferred, the Stamp Act, and the Boston Tea Party. She also completed a science assignment involving scientific investigation and types of energy. She did a remarkable job completing that assignment too. She was very studious during this evening's session. She continues to demonstrate her brilliance in our sessions. She continues to grow as a scholar.
