Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

Calculus Tutoring review by Greg in Spokane, WA
We began work on differentiation today. We reviewed the limit definition of the derivative and how differentiation and continuity worked together. We also talked about some of the basic rules of differentiation and how those applied to certain situations. We then worked out specific problems about tangent lines and rates of change, and finished with a good example of how we could show that a piece-wise defined function could or could not be differentiable. Since the student is just starting this unit, we decided that he would email me tomorrow to see if we needed to schedule 2 sessions or just 1 this week.

She is usually able to find the derivative but struggles with algebra required to solve for dy/dx. On Sunday, we will begin prepping for her exam that is Wednesday.

Calculus Tutoring review by Caleb in Spokane, WA
We covered improper integrals and Newtonian physics. The student initial was confused a little on how to approach an improper integral problem, but after a few example problems he I believe he got a good understanding of the material. For Newtonian physics I showed him what I believe to be the simplest way to setup his free body diagrams so that the math is simplified. We covered how the sum of any forces acting on a body must equal its mass times its acceleration and how to break them up into their component parts.
