What is Biology?

Biology is one of the natural sciences. It focuses on living organisms and includes a wide variety of concepts, from physical structures of cells and chemical processes to physiological mechanisms and evolution. The academic field as is known today has a long history, dating back to ancient times, although it came to prominence in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The word was first used in the 1700s by a Swedish scientist, and then by a German who translated Carl Linnaeus' work. The increase in the use of the microscope, in the 1600s and 1700s, led to scientists' explorations of cells, bacteria, and other tiny organisms.

More recently biology subtopics, like genetics, have flourished and expanded. There's still much to know and learn, academically and professionally, in the field of biology. Biology is a big field to study and explore. There's a lot you can learn about, and there are many opportunities in life to use what you know. There are many different branches in the field of biology, and focused biology tutoring with a private biology tutor can help you to feel comfortable as you examine topics in any of these. Some of the different topics in the overarching biological sciences include the study of the environment (ecology), animals (zoology), genetics, plants (botany), and many more. Evolutionary biology and research is well-known. The field of biology also includes topics like how drugs work in the body and how the body's immune system works. The list below outlines a few of the branches of biology but is not an exhaustive list.

Subdisciplines of Biology (non-comprehensive)

  • Ecology
  • Biochemistry
  • Botany
  • Molecular biology
  • Immunology
  • Zoology
  • Pharmacology
  • Neuroscience
  • Microbiology
  • Evolutionary biology
  • Cell biology
  • Genetics

If you're just getting started in your study of biology, enlisting the help of biology tutors early on can help you to feel more confident in any of the subtopics in biology that you're learning about. Biology tutors can help you to develop specific skills that you can use in describing what happens in a cell, in classifying different species of animals, plants and organisms, and putting scientific theories to use. You may even go beyond foundational understanding and skills in biology to explore future opportunities in the field.

Learning Biology

Even though specific biology courses typically don't begin until high school, students of all ages can benefit from biology tutoring, because students first learn about animals and plants early in their school years. Students learn about different animals - mammals, fish, reptiles, and insects - from an early age and that's zoology. They even learn about fossils and prehistoric life - that's paleontology - sometimes before they're in junior high. Teachers can help students in early grades to become more comfortable with the various topics in biology over the years. It's usually a sophomore year course when students take an actual biology class. That's a great time to begin looking for a "biology tutor near me" or "biology tutoring near me," because that's about the time that a student starts focusing on biology as a subject in its entirety.

Even if your student is learning about biology earlier than their tenth-grade year, or you want to get a head start on that education, biology tutoring is a great option. One-on-one sessions allow a biology tutor to focus solely on your student's academic concerns, and to build a study plan that highlights their strengths and builds on their weaknesses to help improve those.

A biology tutor can help you to recall more than just concepts in biology, but to put that knowledge to use. They can help you to connect what you're learning in school (at any level) with what you see and experience in your daily life.

The list below outlines some of the skills you could be expected to use and explore in a biology course, although it is not an exhaustive list of the topics you might find in a biology course.

Biology A Curriculum Topics (Suggested by the National Human Genome Research Institute)

  • Use methods of qualitative and quantitative observation.
  • Describe the general structures, functions, biochemistry and diversity of cells.
  • Describe levels of organization.
  • Explain perpetuation of species.
  • Apply laws of classical genetics and the principles of chromosomal inheritance to problems of genetic differences in individuals.
  • Explain the general functions of DNA and RNA.
  • Compare scientific theories of the origin and evolution of living things.
  • Apply methods of taxonomy to classify organism.
  • Identify career opportunities in the biological area.

Biology and Testing

Biology students will likely face a number of standardized exams throughout the years from high school through graduate school. These tests have attributes that make them different from regular classroom tests, and when you prepare for them, it's a good idea to do more than just content review. Your biology tutor can help you learn valuable test-taking techniques and strategies that can help you demonstrate your true ability level in the subject. These might include strategies to aid in time management or learning about the test's structure and question formats.

Some standardized exams for biology students include:

  • AP Biology – AP classes give high school students the opportunity to take entry-level college classes and potentially earn credits that could allow them to skip introductory-level college courses. The final exam assesses subjects like the chemistry of life, cellular energetics, gene expression and regulation, and more.
  • CLEP Biology – CLEP exams allow college students to earn credit by demonstrating the skills they have already learned, allowing them to skip over the earliest classes in a subject to save on tuition and time. The Biology CLEP tests molecular and cellular biology, organismal biology, and population biology.
  • GRE Biology Subject Test – This test is taken by undergraduates who plan to apply to a graduate school program in almost any major field. The Biology Subject test includes material evaluating your understanding of metabolism, organelles, chromosomes, immunobiology, plant structure and reproduction, and so on.

High school students can benefit from biology tutoring too, whether they want a little help in understanding their course work or they want to prepare for end-of-the-year exams. A biology tutor can give you the chance to slow down and really focus on learning the material you go through in biology class each day. One-on-one biology tutoring means that you don't have to feel like you're slowing others down, or feel embarrassed if you have to ask a question.

Standardized tests for college admission and college-level exams to gain academic credit for knowledge of a subject aren't the only biology exams that you might have to take. You may have biology tests in end-of-the-year tests as well. One of those is the Pennsylvania Keystone Exam. Three years of results of the Pennsylvania Keystone Exam for eleventh-grade biology students are outlined below.

Pennsylvania Keystone Exam Biology Scores - Grade 11

Proficiency Level 2015 2016 2017
Advanced 20.6% 27.1% 27.6%
Proficient 38.3% 38.7% 35.9%
Basic 22.7% 19.7% 20.5%
Below Basic 18.4% 14.5% 16%

The student and I started working on his Bio assignments. I taught him the concepts embedded in Chapter 8 of his textbook (rotational motion and angular components of Newtonian physics). Using that knowledge, we completed his conceptual homework problems together. Towards the end of the session, we also reviewed concepts from circuits, electricity, and waves as they pertained to his MCAT class.

We reviewed evolution and the mechanisms by which it may occur. We also went over some questions the student had trouble with from the inter session assignment. Then, we spent the rest of our time learning about natural selection in detail and discussed stabilizing, disruptive, and directional selection and possible situations for each case. The student's exam is next week, so we will meet at least a couple of times before then to review the material.

The student had just started the nervous system in her biology class, but her particular period hasn't covered much yet because of assemblies getting in the way. She had a study guide to work on and her teacher expected at least the vocabulary to get done. We went through each vocab word and I had her try to guess the meaning of it. Then I would help her get to the right definition. Finally, we would sometimes look it up in the chapter ensure the correct and formal definition. There were a few questions afterwards asking about the neuron and how it all works. She had a drawing of the neuron in class, so we used it as a diagram to help answer the questions. I had explained to the student a little bit more in detail than what her book necessarily went into just so that she would have a further understanding as to how it worked. In addition to the neuron, the central nervous system was also on the worksheet, and those were just basic questions about the structure of the brain.

What is Biology?

Biology is one of the most widely studied subjects in the broader academic category of science. Technically, biology is classified as a natural science. This is due to its focus on living things. As a field of study, biology's roots can be traced all the way back to the 1700s and the work of Carl Linnaeus. The advent of the microscope in the 17th century is what led to biology becoming a serious field of study. With the power of the microscope, scientists of the era were finally able to examine things like cells, bacteria, and other tiny organisms on a deeper level.

Since those early days of biology, the field of study has grown tremendously. Today, it encompasses a number of topics that are at the forefront of scientific discovery. There are also a wide variety of sub-disciplines within the broader field of biology. For example, biologists who focus on studying the environment are called ecologists, whereas those who study animals are called zoologists. Other subdisciplines of biology cover things like immunology, biochemistry, botany, evolutionary biology, and even genetics.

Whether you're just starting out on your biology journey or you're an advanced student, you can get help with your coursework by signing up for biology tutoring. Working with a private instructor is a great way to build your understanding of foundational topics in the field or to expand your understanding of more complex sub-disciplines within the field. Your instructor will focus on the specific biology topics that you need the most help with in order to ensure that you're getting an efficient and effective supplement to your biology education.

Learning Biology

The roots of biology are planted very early on in the educational process. Even though students don't usually start taking formal biology classes until high school, they'll spend their early years learning about scientific topics that will help them once they get to those formal biology classes. For example, younger students will spend time learning about animal and plants and their different classifications while in elementary school. These are things that will prepare them for a more rigorous study of living things later on in their academic careers. These early years are important because it helps students become more comfortable with biology concepts.

As students progress forward with their education, they'll start to learn about more and more advanced concepts in the field of biology. For example, the National Human Genome Research Institute has laid out a suggested guideline for what a student's first advanced biology course should cover. This includes things like using both the qualitative and quantitative methods of observations, describing the structures and functions of different parts of cells, and understanding and being able to explain the purpose of DNA and RNA.

Do you need help with any of these topics? If so, then you may benefit from signing up for biology tutoring. The quickest way to get started with biology tutors is by reaching out to us directly. Consider doing so if you're interested in getting help with developing your understanding of biology.

Testing and Biology

As one of the core scientific subject areas, biology is a subject that is often tested. You may be asked to demonstrate your understanding of biology in the classroom or when taking standardized tests. For example, if you're a college student who wants to test out of a biology class requirement, then you may take the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) test on biology. Performing well on this test could allow you to skip over a class that you would otherwise have to take. If you feel that you already have a strong understanding of biology, then this could be a worthwhile option for you to pursue.

However, if you decide to take the CLEP test on biology, then you'll want to spend a good amount of time preparing for it. This is something that biology tutors can help you with. The CLEP on biology has a time limit of 90 minutes and features 115 questions. It focuses on the broad content areas of molecular and cellular biology, organismal biology, and population biology. Within these categories, you may be asked questions on things like the chemical composition of organisms, various parts of cells, evolution, social biology, and more.

Working with a biology tutor is a great way to prepare for any exam that features biology questions. This is because your instructor can focus on the specific biology topics that you need help understanding before taking your upcoming exam. You'll be able to work quickly through the biology topics that you already understand at a high level and can spend as much time as you need to on the topics that you're having a tough time with. This creates an efficient and effective test preparation process that can help you feel more confident on the day of your test.

In addition to helping you with your biology knowledge, your instructor can also help you develop your general test-taking skills. For example, you can spend some of your time together learning about how to deal with restrictive testing time limits and how to manage your time more effectively when taking important tests. If you've ever struggled with test anxiety in the past, your tutor can even spend some of your time together showing you relaxation techniques that you can use to deal with test anxiety if you start to experience it on your upcoming biology exam. These are skills that you'll be able to use on the exam that you're currently studying for as well as on any future exams that you take. Thus, test preparation biology tutoring provides a well-rounded learning experience.

Why is Tutoring Effective?

When you sign up to work with a biology tutor, we'll start the process off by connecting you with an experienced educator who can start working with you quickly. We'll make every effort to connect you with instructors who are able to work around your existing schedule, as well. This makes it easy to get the academic assistance that you're looking for, even if you already have a full schedule.

Once you get connected with your instructor, you'll be able to start working with them through a series of one-on-one learning sessions. Your instructor can create a customized lesson plan for you that's based on your specific academic needs and targeted with your growth in mind. You can take as much or as little time as you need on each biology topic that your lessons cover. For example, if you have a hard time remembering the functions of different parts of cells, then your instructor can spend extra time with you on this. You can go through each part of the cells that you're studying at your own pace and ask your educator for additional guidance with whatever functions you're having the hardest time understanding. You can also move through the cellular functions that you already understand as quickly as you want.

In all, this creates an entirely personalized learning experience. This type of educational assistance is hard to find through other academic opportunities. For example, in the classroom, teachers simply don't have enough time to devote this amount of attention to each of their students. This is why signing up for tutoring is a great way to fill the gaps between what's being covered in your biology course and what your current understanding of the subject is.

How Can You Get Started?

As detailed above, biology is an extremely important field of scientific study. You'll need to have a solid understanding of biology if you want to work in industries like medicine and research. However, biology can also be a challenging subject to fully understand. This is where biology tutors come in. Varsity Tutors would be happy to connect you with private instructors who can help you work through your problem areas in biology.
