Today I tutored the student for about an hour while she finished a practice exam to prepare for the test. I then proctored the exam for her for the next 2 hours. We plan on trying some new techniques in order to get her to understand radicals and how to work with them.

In preparation for Monday's Chapter 9 test, the student and I did a comprehensive review of the chapter topics and completed 2 assignments (worksheet and textbook review problems). Topics included identifying shapes of quadratic graphs, finding the vertex, graphing a quadratic on a coordinate system, finding the axis of symmetry, knowing how a coefficient might invert a graph, completing the square to solve quadratics, factoring to solve quadratics, applying the quadratic equation to solve equations, knowing how using the discriminant determine the number of solutions to a quadratic, and factoring.

Assessment of tutoring needs/focus. End of semester exams - English and math. English: grammar, punctuation (comma and semicolon placement, writing, conjunctions) - asked the student to bring his materials from school since the focus was on test prep. Math - Algebra I level math - quadratic equations.

The student's final test of the course focuses entirely on factoring, so today we did our final review of factoring, preparing her reference sheet for the test along the way. The student didn't have any trouble with prime factorization or factoring monomials, and for the most part she remembered how to divide out greatest common factors and factor trinomials, but special binomial factoring once again took some extra time. With today's practice and her reference sheet, though, I think she is prepared for the test.

Today was the first session, so we spent a lot of time discussing where the student is and what she needs to plan on doing and how to approach studying. We started going over some of the areas where she struggled, such as quadratics and graphing.
