ACT Math Tutoring review by Dane in Norman, OK
We reviewed a science diagnostic test that the student had completed, and I also introduced him to a gamified productivity app, which he can use to keep track of his progress in preparing for the test. I'm sure he will have plenty of practice problems for us to review for our next session!

ACT Math Tutoring review by Tessa in Norman, OK
We reviewed math concepts so that the student can approach them with greater rapidity. We covered sequence/series theory, closed-form and recursive formulas, terms and sums of sequences and series, inverse functions, parabolic forms, constant variables, completing the square, variable expressions and equations, rate problems, and formulas for areas/surface areas/volumes of geometric figures. She is a smart kid who has gotten by in the past with guess and check, but the ACT is no place for that! This week, she will take 2-3 practice tests for the ACT from her new ACT book. She must take them under appropriate conditions to simulate the actual exam.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Joshua in Norman, OK
We reviewed math problems and grammar, and we looked at some strategies to work more efficiently on the test. We also went over SAT and ACT essays. The student can email me a sample essay of each, and I'll give her feedback.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Samuel in Norman, OK
We reviewed more practice tests that the student took and found that he was a little rough on those, so we reviewed them and he grasped the concept very quickly. We also reviewed more of the English section of his prep book and I recommended some strategies for test taking as well as some warnings about that section. We then, started to cover the writing section of the exam a bit today and I highlighted the basics of that section and what we're going to work on in future sessions. He will be taking the English, Reading, and Science sections timed for our next session and we will be covering any missed questions and any specific subject problem areas. We will be seeing if he has any issues with time on the English and Reading and if so we will work on more strategies to save time.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Sid in Norman, OK
We reviewed parallel structure in English. I reminded the student that whenever they ask about main ideas in a paragraph, make sure you're looking at the last sentence. Watch out for the trifecta of "some, others, and still others." "However, nevertheless, and on the other hand" are all direction changing phrases. In Math, when dividing two things with exponents, make sure you're subtracting! Anything that's a fraction is automatically a rational number. We reviewed SOHCAHTOA, and tan^-1 (a/b) just means the tangent of what angle will give you a/b.

ACT Math Tutoring review by Joe in Norman, OK
We reviewed several sample essays today, and dedicated a large portion of our time to understanding exactly how the writing section is scored. By distinguishing elements from 1s, 3s, and 5s, we were able to see that clear theses and strong organizational flow are the aspects that set the baseline for the score; however, stylistic and fancier writing with enhanced language can help boost the first impression and overall impact. After, we discussed the wording of trick questions in the Reading section, primarily those that are set to make the student confused or misguided (ex. "according to lines 52-65"). We also talked about what some words actually meant in the questions, and how to approach those types of questions ("anomaly"). Tomorrow we will spend more time reviewing prose fiction and humanities passages, and we will follow that with an analysis of Science section questions.
