I have a life-long commitment to education. I believe that, as an educator, I possess a unique form of authority; and the natural purpose of authority is to empower the steward of that authority to lead others to fulfillment. Thus, I have regarded my position as an educator with the utmost respect, as I have come to understand the importance of every moment I have with my students.Every lesson, interaction, assessment, project, and class discussion has the potential to bring each student one step closer to achieving their goals. When I do see my students achieve the success they seek, it is a profound moment, as these individuals commonly overcome academic and personal barriers. As an educator, I am committed to serving my students, community, and institutions. I am constantly seeking ways to improve and expand my present skill set so that I can maximize my potential, and the potential of my students in-and-out of the classroom. I have a rich interdisciplinary approach to teaching, and experience using a wide range of teaching styles and modalities.

I am a recent graduate from Grand Valley State University, with a Bachelor's of Science in Microbiology and a minor in Spanish. I will be attending medical school at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker MD. School of Medicine starting this summer. I have been a tutor for the past six years, and have worked with students from a diverse array of backgrounds. I started out as a volunteer K-5 English and Math tutor at a center for underprivileged youth in rural Ohio. After graduating high school and starting college, I began working as a college biology and Spanish tutor at the university success center. I was designated the top tutor of 2021, having conducted 250 sessions in one semester. Upon noticing a lack of affordable MCAT prep options, I began offering MCAT prep classes online during the height of the COVID19 pandemic. I have worked with veterans, adult learners, and people with disabilities. I am passionate about providing all students, regardless of age or situation, with personalized tutor sessions that help them achieve their full potential. In my free time, I enjoy volunteering at my church, running, and discovering new cuisines.

I prefer to construct the concept for my students rather than teaching directly, as in traditional lecturemethods. I encourage students through group discussions, discussion board activities, and in-class problem-solving activities that improve student-student interactions. I am an individual who adjusts my teaching methods in order to get improved student output across her courses. I trained for online teaching and had experienced on online teaching.Interested courses: AP Physics 1, College Physics (Algebra based), University Physics (Calculus based), Fundamentals of Physics
When I first began language teaching in 2001, I will be honest and confess that I mirrored the teacher-centered approach of the "sage on the stage" that my professors had utilized while I was working towards my BA and MA in Spanish. When I began my doctorate at the University of Minnesota in Leadership for Intercultural and International Education, however, that began to change. My doctoral program was designed around the cohort model, which was new to me. In it, we were all considered experts in our field and we were expected to teach each other. I liked the responsibility placed on my shoulders of presenting a designated topic to my peers and professor. In this student-centered approach to learning, I appreciated that the professor served the role of mediator / observer and the students were responsible not only for their own learning, but for presenting accurate information to their peers. That positive experience motivated me to shift my teacher-centered approach to a student-centered approach in my ESL classroom. While I don't have my students instruct the entire grammar point or vocabulary lesson in front of their peers, I do assign a micro lesson to each student that they must review with the class as if they were the instructor. Currently, I am an adjunct Non-Credit ESL and Spanish professor at Compton Community College. In my role, my primary mission is to help students develop their language proficiency. Professionally, I define myself first and foremost as a teacher, and in order to teach effectivelyi.e., foster student learning by serving as guide, resource, and cheerleaderit is essential that I continue to expand my own professional expertise. However, teaching involves more than just the development of skills and the communication of knowledge, and a liberal arts education seeks to nurture the qualities of mind and character which permit students to realize their full potential as contributors to society, informed citizens, and caring and responsible adults. Part of my own responsibility as an educator is to serve as a role model by committing myself to personal growth as well as to professional development. I believe that the personal and the professional are inextricably interwoven in teaching and that both feed and are fed by the teaching in which I am engaged. Students acquire another language most effectively when they are able to use what they are learning to express something meaningful about topics that are relevant to them. I am a member of the TESOL International Association and also subscribe to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages' (ACTFL) emphasis on proficiency-based instruction that prepares students to carry out global functions such as creating with the language by recombining learned material, asking and answering questions on familiar topics, and narrating and describing in major time frames. Whereas second language pedagogy used to distinguish between the "active" skills of speaking and writing and the "passive" skills of listening and reading, the current terminology of "productive" versus "receptive" recognizes the active nature of all four skills. Nevertheless, such a distinction still masks the productive process that takes place when one decodes and interprets an oral utterance or written text. In structuring my language courses, I strive to create and implement activities that enable students to develop all four language skills, with particular emphasis placed on listening. Listening is often overlooked during the first two years of college instruction, but it is essential for student success and is actually the most used skill in immersion and everyday contexts.
I strongly believe that anyone can learn a subject in the right settings. So my goal as a tutor is to provide as much assistance as I can to make sure Biology and other sciences can be understood. I provide advice, practice problems and plenty of in-depth explanations to make sure students learn not only main concepts but also additional facts and details that make the subject interesting. My experience with tutoring includes being a peer mentor for one academic year, interning with a local elementary school and volunteering in academic settings for over three years. I also studied abroad in Santander, Spain for seven weeks which has given me a wide range of experiences in various cultures. Recently I graduated with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences and a B.A. in Spanish from Western Michigan University with plans to attend medical school. Therefore, I would be more than happy to assist others with learning scientific material. If you have the will there will be a way!

Hello! In my years as a teacher, I have worked with students of all ages and abilities. Pre-school, Kindergarten and homeschooled students are favorite groups of mine as they have some unique learning situations, styles and needs. My Special Education training offers a unique perspective into how to teach so that students learn best. I utilize whichever strategies work with a student and will continually adjust to meet their needs. I believe that learning can and should be fun, engaging and meaningful. Incorporating a fun activity helps keep students engaged and allows for a short "break". I look forward to meeting your student, let's get started!
I believe fully in the philosophy of lifelong learning, and I plan to be a lifelong learner. For ten years, I have enjoyed tutoring others in my areas of strength, not only to help with content mastery, but also to help others enjoy becoming lifelong learners themselves. I have just graduated with my Master's degree in viola performance from Carnegie Mellon University, having earned a Bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University.I am a musician by training, but I enjoy seeking knowledge in all subjects, and sharing that knowledge with anybody who will listen. In particular, I love to tutor writing, because the tutoring process encompasses both the "strict" rules of written grammar and the "open-ended" rules of content organization. To learn to write, a student must learn to express ideas, and in this setting, tutors and students can truly get to know each other. The most effective learning comes after we make learning enjoyable. That takes effort from both the teacher and the student. The teacher should come to the table with a good method and the creativity to break from the method from time to time. The student should come with an open mind, a little bit of patience, and curiosity about at least one thing - even if it is not directly related to the lesson. Some of the best learning moments can start out as light conversations!
Hi, I'm Meghan Anderson ("Meggie," for short.) I hold a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and Bachelor's Degrees in Psychology and English. I hold Michigan Teaching Certifications for both general and special education, K-8th grade. Throughout my years of experience teaching and tutoring, I've crafted a teaching style which focuses around three pillars: 1. Teacher/Student connection and prioritized rapport 2. Curiosity-driven, collaborative learning and frequent student self-reflection 3. Learning strategies rooted in both research-based educational and psychological practices I believe that learning works best when it's collaborative, joyful, and tailored to the individual student. When students enjoy their time in our sessions, their confidence grows, their willingness to try increases, and their academic progress accelerates. I have a creative mind, I am very accommodating, and if your learner struggles to understand a topic, I excel in coming up with a variety of ways to instruct them so that they will understand and be successful. I encourage students to reflect on their own learning. At the end of each session, we do a quick wrap up where they share things like what strategies helped them most, what felt challenging and what they'd like to adjust next time. This helps them master the material and develop a strong sense of their own learning style, a skill that supports them far beyond our tutoring sessions. While tutoring often focuses on academics, research shows that a student's emotional experience plays a major role in how they learn. My background in psychology helps me understand each student's unique personality, motivation, and needs. I use that insight to create a supportive environment where students feel safe, capable, and excited to grow. We can't always choose what we learn, but in my lessons we always choose how we learn. Together, we will figure out the right concoction of tools and strategies for your educational needs.
