Strategic, high-energy, confident professional bridging the gap between goals and accomplishments

I graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in Neuroscience & Behavior. I also obtained a Masters in Teaching with a focus on middle school math from Relay Graduate School of Education. I now look to pursue a PhD in sociology in the upcoming year.I have worked five years in education, three of which I spent teaching middle school math. Math and Science are my favorite subjects. I believe it is important to understand the ways in which our world works, and these subjects provide a good foundation for building necessary critical-thinking skills in kids.I consider myself a coffee enthusiast. So, in my spare time I love to explore new coffee shops. Aside from that I love to dance, go on hikes, and spend time with cats. I believe it is important to have a healthy life outside of education, hence my hobbies.
Hi there! I'm Arian. I graduated from Wesleyan University with degrees in English and Environmental Studies, with a focus on creative writing. For my senior thesis, I wrote a 50-page epic poem that intertwined the geobiological evolution of the earth with my family history.I've been tutoring intermittently since my freshman year of high school--from one-on-one, subject-specific tutoring to coaching my high school speech team to teaching saxophone lessons at an arts center to leading writing workshops for disenfranchised boys at the Juvenile Detention Center near my university.I believe that anyone can learn anything as long they approach it from the ground up. As such, I strive to ensure students understand material at a foundational and conceptual level before advancing into specifics. Furthermore, I believe the learning process should be as exciting and collaborative as possible, and that each lesson should be tailored to a student's particular learning styles and needs.Bottom line, I love working with people and helping them grasp intimidating concepts. Learning should be exhilarating, and I always try to facilitate that thrill. I welcome feedback from my students and their parents, because I want to be the best tutor I can be for each individual I'm working with. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have or to schedule a lesson.
Hi there! I'm Tom, and I'm a junior in the College of East Asian Studies at Wesleyan University. I spent the fall semester abroad in Hangzhou at the Middlebury School in China, and have been taking Mandarin since middle school. Whether you're looking for extra practice for school or want to brush up before a trip, or maybe even just want a conversation partner, I'm here to help!
I am a 2019 graduate of Wesleyan University where I studied Government and Romance Languages. Since graduation, I have done editorial work at the United Nations and worked in France as an English teacher. I tutor a range of subjects, but I particularly love helping people improve their writing because I believe being a good writer is one of the most important skills to have for success.
Hi ! I enjoy helping people learn statistics, probability, and coding in python and R. I think these subjects are often taught by teachers who don't have empathy for their students who might struggle with the material. I will work with you to take on the material, and will help you take it on in small chunks, making sure you understand and feel confident each step of the way. I'm excited to work with you!
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. I received my Bachelor of Arts from the interdisciplinary College of Social Studies and earned certificates in South Asian studies, international relations, and social, cultural, and critical theory. I graduated with honors for my senior thesis which explored the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan. I was awarded both the Davenport Grant for study of public affairs and the Tololyan Fund for study of diasporas and transnationalism, with which I was able to traverse the Indian subcontinent, interview family members, and conduct independent research. This experience confirmed my love for stories and their potential to build compassion, and so upon graduation, I continued pursuing historical, archival, and educational work as a William J. Clinton Fellow with the American India Foundation. I spent my fellowship year traveling across the country as a story scholar with the 1947 Partition Archive, collecting the oral histories of Partition survivors and helping them realize the potential of their own stories in facilitating greater cooperation between communities for generations to come.I am similarly passionate about helping students as a means of helping them realize their own potentialmy ultimate goal, far more important than just going over any particular subject material or standardized test. Since high school I have developed curriculums and tutored students in areas like character education for elementary schoolers, college essay writing for underprivileged high schoolers, and standardized test-taking for all ages. My teaching philosophy revolves around the idea that my success as a tutor depends on my ability to address the student in particular, given their background, behavior, and aspirations. This draws on my own experience as a student in the personalized, small classes offered at a small liberal arts school like Wesleyan. As a result, my philosophy often translates into a teaching style that draws heavily on high-level devices like stories, analogies, and real-life experiences tailored for the student. Together, we can then boil down the big picture into relatable specifics through which one can find the answer. The process can be thought of almost as putting together a jigsaw puzzle: my role will be to come up with and find the pieces before guiding the student to learn how exactly they can be put together, so he or she will always be ready next time they encounter such a problem.Though my expertise and passion in the social scienceseconomics, history, political science, philosophyis obvious given my academic background, I also have extensive work experience in computer science and programming that I am eager to share with my students. In high school I excelled with standardized tests like the ACT and SAT, in addition to a variety of subjects in the AP curriculum. I look forward to the opportunity to help students in as many of these areas as needed to ensure a solid academic foundation for whatever future successes they aspire toward.Since returning to NYC, I have also worked as an independent writer and musician, with plans for graduate school in the interdisciplinary South Asian studies and the release of my debut album, consisting of songs written during my year in India.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received a Bachelors of Arts in Biology and Music in the spring of 2015. Since graduation, I have participated in science research internships while also preparing to take the GRE and attend a doctoral program in the biological sciences. In the summer of 2015, I participated in behavioral research on chimpanzees, and am now assisting with the skeletal archives at the American Museum of Natural History. I have had experience teaching as a peer mentor for college students in Introductory Biology, as a camp counselor at the Central Park Zoo, and as a tap dance instructor. My academic strengths are science, social sciences, music, and SAT preparation. I loved my time in primary and secondary school and hope to instill my excitement for learning into my tutees. While sometimes tests (both standardized and otherwise) can be tricky and decrease students' faith in themselves, I am certain that, with a little confidence boost, any student can make great strides with their coursework. As a teacher, I offer patience, humor, and brevity. I have enjoyed the time I've spent getting students to become engaged, excited, and proud of their knowledge. I look forward to giving my tutees this "confidence boost."
I'm Katherine, a recent graduate with a Biology and European Literature/Philosophy degree. I'm passionate about helping you meet your goals through personalized tutoring strategies.
Hi there! My name is Rachel and I am a writer, art educator, and community event planner. I recently graduated with a B.A. in African American Studies from Wesleyan University, with a concentration in Literature and Performance.Writing and reading are more than hobbies for me. They are my passions, as well as lenses through which I learn more about myself and the world. Getting to teach other people the skills necessary to have enriching experiences with literature is an amazing opportunity to me. I do not take it for granted.During my college years, I started off as an English tutor for middle school-aged children. Within my first year of college, I became one of four student coordinators for a local afterschool program. I was in charge of developing weekly curriculum for students aged 4-14, preparing different plans-of-action for students to tackle reading comprehension and writing skills and topics. While I was sad to graduate and pass leadership of the program over, I was overjoyed to have spent such a long time doing what I love in a community that I adored.I am excited to be a part of the Varsity Tutors Team! Please view the subjects in which I have experience tutoring. I look forward to working with students and families of all backgrounds in order to help make the literary arts more than just "words on a page."
My name is Coey and I am a senior at Wesleyan University, a liberal arts college in Middletown, Connecticut. I major in Psychology and hold a Cultural Psychology Concentration certification and a minor degree in Economics. I am also the incoming Lab Manager at the Sidanius Lab.I am an active student researcher and have done research on topics including prejudice, punishment, and minority leadership, to name a few. I love teaching and using my knowledge to help others. I have tutored individual college students (18-20) and middle schoolers (12-14) and also served as a Teaching Apprentice for a 150-person college-level psychology course. When I am not teaching or working on research, you will find me taking a walk in the woods or binge-watching "House M.D." or "A Bit of Fry and Laurie"
I am a rising senior at Wesleyan University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Latin American Studies. I have extensive experience with Spanish-language coursework and tutoring: I spent a semester one-on-one tutoring a high school student in beginning Spanish, have taken countless university-level Spanish classes, have taken both the Language and Literature AP Spanish tests, and have traveled and lived abroad in Spanish-speaking countries.I also have experience tutoring elementary math; I spent an entire summer creating and teaching an original curriculum of basic skills math classes to high school students. I also took the SAT fairly recently and would love to pass my expertise on to any high school student preparing to take the test soon! My teaching style/philosophy is visual and practice-based. I always tailor my sessions to the the student's specific needs but I love to incorporate interactive activities and many practice problems.
From October 2009 through August 2014, I worked as a tutor (20+ hours per week) with a highly respected tutoring company. I tutored students of all ages in the areas of reading, writing, and math. I also prepared students for the SAT and ISEE. In September 2013, I started my own business doing private tutoring. I have continued to work with students of all ages in the areas of reading, writing, and math, and I have continued to prepare students for the SAT and ISEE. In general, about half of my students are doing test preparation and half are getting some kind of help with school. At the tutoring center where I worked, we had a number of students who were being tutored in order to become very advanced in their studies at school and to gain admission to highly selective colleges by getting top-notch scores on their SAT. We also had students who were struggling to do well in their classes and therefore needed help with their homework and with understanding the material they were learning in school. I worked successfully with both kinds of students. My approach to tutoring is definitely gentle, but also firm in terms of expecting my students to work hard during the tutoring sessions and to work diligently on any homework I might assign. I am sensitive to the learning styles of my students and do everything I can to communicate in a way that makes sense to them. I often make use of visuals and manipulatives in teaching various concepts. My goal is to enable students to really understand the material they are studying. I am happy to use whatever school or other materials that parents and/or students would like. I am also prepared to suggest additional materials that might be helpful for a particular student in a specific subject area. I am familiar with a number of very helpful resources. Before working at the tutoring center, I was actively involved in the homeschooling community. I homeschooled my older two children through high school and my younger two children through 8th grade. I also taught enrichment classes in the areas of math, science, music, and art to students of all ages in a homeschool co-op, for a total of eight years.
Hi! My name is Laura! I am a rising senior in college where I am majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry. I have four years of tutoring experience, tutoring students on SAT prep as well as college essay writing. I believe that each student is unique and requires a tutoring approach tailored to their individual learning style. By identifying the setting in which a student learns best, I can help students best expand their knowledge to new levels while maintaining a fun and engaging environment. I have a background of working with all kinds of students, including those with disabilities, ADHD, high achievers, and those who may require more support. I am passionate about learning and want to cultivate that experience for as many students as I can!
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my B.A. in African Studies with concentrations in History and Religion. I have two years of professional experience as a math tutor in Richmond, Virginia. I also spent a summer in Nairobi, Kenya, teaching at an all-girls school. I greatly enjoy tutoring both history (and related social studies) and mathematics because I see them as two different ways of telling stories about the world in which we live. Tutoring history means building stories out of a collection of facts, a love of places, peoples, and cultures both near and far that I learned young while describing my family history - with a father from Cape Town, South Africa, and a mother from New Orleans - to others. Tutoring mathematics (and standardized tests) means breaking an idea down to its most basic parts, figuring out why and how it works in a way that brings great improvement in both understanding and practical performance. In my spare time, I love dancing, writing, and Netflix, and never travel on the subway without a good book.
Hello! I am a rising 1L at the University of Chicago Law School with a background tutoring students from 5th grade through undergrad. As an undergraduate, I attended Wesleyan University where I studied religious studies, philosophy, European history, and theoretical economics. While there, I won honors for my writing and research. For students interested in improving their writing, I work with all age groups to cultivate an ear for rhythm, an eye for detail, a mind for research--and a stomach for revision, revision, revision. For the LSAT, we will come up with a plan for preparing that is customized to your schedule and goals. This plan will likely include daily drilling with real LSAT problems, supplemented by book reading and practice tests. During our sessions that target logical reasoning sections, we will focus on argument structure. We will work on identifying conclusions, premises, and assumptions in arguments, as well as how to use these skills to answer necessary and sufficient assumption questions. For analytical reasoning (logic games), we will break down the three most common types of games and focus on maintaining accuracy while building solving speed. Finally, for reading comprehension, we will work together to come up with an approach that emphasizes your strengths (like reading quickly, remembering details, annotating effectively) to move towards a higher score.I am looking forward to meeting you!
I am a professional tutor specializing in essay writing on all subjects, creative writing, grammar and reading comprehension. I am also a professional editor and dramaturg, working with professional authors to help them refine and deepen their manuscripts. I am currently on the faculty of a major university's graduate program in Writing, and have previously been on the faculty of Purchase College, SUNY in the BFA writing program and at the New School in their MFA writing program.I have a wide-ranging and very active curiosity! I'm an information sponge. One of my favorite parts of being a writing tutor is learning about my clients' subjects. I have had clients hire me to help them write essays on everything from midwifery to international conflict zones and world orders and have loved the knowledge I have gained along the way. In this way, I learn as much from my clients as they do from me.In addition to going over the basics of good essay writing like organization, development of ideas, sentence and paragraph structure, use of vocabulary, etc., I also employ a system of "neutral questions" to help writers go deeper into their own ideas, synthesize their thoughts, and locate their own areas of deepest engagement. I find that this technique almost always leads to bigger, more complex ideas, more passionate rhetorical argument and more thorough work -- in short, better writing. I then work with you to structure your writing most effectively. Because my focus is on helping you go deeper into your own ideas and helping you develop and organize your thoughts and writing, there is no subject we can't create great writing on together.I am a graduate of The Dalton School and Wesleyan University, and have tutored and worked in the Writing Workshop of both institutions. My academic writing has won the GLAAD Prize, a nationally recognized award for scholarship. I'm also a theater artist and have won the Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience. I enjoy culture of all kinds -- music, movies, books, magazines, online content, etc.I look forward to helping you with all of your verbal, reading and writing needs.
Fourteen years ago, I accidentally became a teacher and fell in love with the work. Since that time, I've worked with just about every age group and helped all kinds of people to read, write, hear, and speak English. More recently, I've made a switch to teaching pre-schoolers, which means that now I'm also helping people learn to count, sing, breathe deeply, hold a pencil, treat others kindly, and all sorts of other new things. If I had to summarize what I've learned so far from all of these teaching experiences, I'd boil it down to this: A good attitude accounts for at least 75% of learning. If you feel you can learn it, and you're not afraid of making some mistakes along the way, then you will ultimately learn it. Whom I have encountered regrettably often, however, are students who don't feel that way. So a major part of my work is not only to make the learning easier, but also to demonstrate to a student how far he or she has already progressed along the journey. It's easy to see where we need improvement; ironically, it can be much harder to be able to take stock of our success. But the balance is critical—sometimes I feel that if I can just help a person improve their self-confidence, then the rest will practically take care of itself. As far as my own motivation is concerned, it's as simple as this: I like people, and I like getting to know what makes them tick. To me, teaching is no more or less than a process of getting to know somebody, as mediated by whatever learning goals are before us. If I can help you gain a skill or attain to an achievement, it's because I learned enough about how you think and work to help guide you there. Learning about who students are is its own reward for me; after all, how can people not be fascinating? In my free time, I like to keep things pretty quiet. My favorite thing to do is to make music, and you can listen to the results on my SoundCloud page. I've been a keyboard player since age 5, and a self-taught guitarist since 15. Another avid habit of mind is to practice mindfulness meditation; this is something I was more or less driven to as a result of my years in the public schools, which are environments where it's really really hard to pay attention. In the past few years, I've started sharing what I've learned with others as a mindfulness coach, and it's very gratifying to see people make leaps and bounds in their attentional skills within weeks or months that it's taken me years to see in my own practice. More information about this can be found on my website, equanimizer.com.Thank you for reading. I am looking forward to helping you meet your challenges!
As an aspiring physician, I hope to make an everlasting impact on my communities through the skills I have acquired on this path. Medicine is an increasingly dynamic field that offers an environment for endless learning. I always knew that I wanted to pursue a career in medicine because of my curiosity, ability to listen and be empathetic, and my constant desire to help others whenever I could. I believe that tutoring and mentoring will help bolster these skills for me.I have a wide range of experiences as an individual passionate about numerous fields, spanning music and laboratory work. I received my bachelor of arts for Molecular Biology & Biochemistry and Music from Wesleyan University in May of 2019. As my resume indicates, I have been involved as a musical mentor, a peer tutor, biology teacher, and a course assistant for the university orchestra. These facilities have provided me the opportunity to develop skills as a meticulous and passionate individual apt for tutoring.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University who is now based in the New York Metropolitan Area. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic Literatures & Cultures and in History, with a focus on U.S. History and Latin American History. I also plan to pursue a doctorate in History. I have been teaching in various capacities for many years now, and have worked with students from Pre-K all the way to high school seniors. While I enjoy all subjects, I am most passionate about Spanish and History. I believe a nuanced understanding of diverse histories and languages, with an emphasis on those of the underrepresented, is an invaluable tool to which all students should have access. I hope to sow understanding and awareness in students of all backgrounds, to empower their voices, and to make learning fun!
My entire career, both as a tutor and a classroom teacher, has been teaching both the subject matter and aspect of teaching English or German and encouraging students to be receptive to material. To this end I spend my energy crafting the way it is presented which takes time but it is well spent. Working the material or lesson to the needs of the student means including how best to get the material across. I seek any way I can to reach a particular student or class. This may consist of finding patterns, relating to the student's life, reaching for tasks that are meaningful and, yes, even fun.
As a passionate Neuroscientist with a PhD from Wesleyan University, I have over 6 years of experience in tutoring subjects such neuroscience, neural systems, molecular biology, genetics, general biology, and scientific writing (AP level, college level, and high school level). My teaching philosophy prioritizes the individual learning needs of each student, ensuring that complex concepts are presented in an accessible manner. I am dedicated to fostering a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable engaging with the material, asking questions, and providing feedback. My goal is to empower students to develop their skills and confidence, ultimately leading to academic success. I am also interested in continuing to explore the intersection of science and education, which fuels my commitment to helping students thrive.
Hi! I'm a recent grad from Wesleyan University, where I've worked as a tutor, a teaching assistant, and a researcher. I've taught middle-schoolers how to program their own video games, interviewed monks in Minnesota, studied Dante under a world-class expert in Bologna, and edited transcripts on the history of philosophy since 300 BCE. I can proofread essays, perform long division, translate difficult texts, and find the derivative.Prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, my plans were to attend Columbia's School of Social Work, where I was hoping to counsel foster youth. Unfortunately, I've had to defer my enrollment to Columbia, but I'm still just as passionate about education and child welfare as ever. My goal as a tutor is to share with my students an excitement for learning, as well as a sense of wonder for the infinite potential of the written word.
Hello! My name is Langston Morrison, J.D.. I am from Pennsylvania and have a deep passion for learning and teaching foreign languages. I speak English, Spanish, Mandarin, German, French, Kiswahili, etyo (language spoken by the Bubi people of Equatorial Guinea), and Lingala. I also read and write Egyptian hieroglpyhs and Coptic. In my language sessions, I utilize an immersion-based approach where I prioritize the use of the target language in sessions. Limited English is spoken by me and the student. This is useful and necessary because it enables and encourages the student to enhance his/her speaking and listening skills. In addition, I utilize fun tools to practice reading and writing as well to improve the student's vocabulary and grammar. For any inquiries regarding our sessions or student progress, please don't hesitate to reach out on this platform or via cell phone or email (see below). Merci, c'est parti! I am a sophomore at Wesleyan University, double majoring in Chemistry and Film Studies. I am extremely dedicated to helping my students, pushing to help maximize their potential. Although I can assist in numerous fields, I primarily hold a passion toward chemistry. In my time tutoring students from various academic and social backgrounds, I maintain an overarching goal of creating a safe and comfortable learning environment, which in turn allows my students to harness their full potential. I firmly uphold the belief of understanding over memorization, placing priority toward a student's ability to learn and comprehend over cramming. In my free time, I enjoy reading fantasy and the routine nighttime walk.
I am currently an undergraduate student at Wesleyan University and am majoring in molecular biology and biochemistry. At Wesleyan, I've been a member of the Science Outreach program, where we teach scientific concepts to students at local elementary schools. This experience has been extremely rewarding and has made me interested in helping other students as well.
I tutored SAT throughout all four years of college, and I am passionate about helping students achieve their higher education goals - in part by leaping over the standardized testing hurdle. I believe that access to helpful hints, tips, tricks, and, of course, grammatical concepts, through an SAT tutor can make all the difference in alleviating at least some of the stress that SAT season can bring. My teaching style is very flexible and depends on the needs of my students - I am constantly considering my students' prior knowledge, learning styles, and interests when creating my lesson plans.
I'm a clinical psychologist recently out of grad school. I'm passionate about teaching, test prep, and coaching. I look forward to working with you.

I was greatly helped by my academic mentors back then and would love to help you out now if you need assistance with that process.I've tutored in a variety of subjects for several years, including algebra, Spanish, Python, and U.S. civics, and I'm a strong believer in everyone getting the academic help they need. I am a true New England boy, and am an alumnus of Wesleyan, Yale and Uconn Law School. I was a double major in Political Science and Psychology and enjoy the intersection of the two. I have taught for over twenty years most recently as a professor of Law and Criminology at UB. I also lived in Hong Kong and taught test prep to some of the world's most aspirational students.
I am a recent Wesleyan University graduate who is passionate about education. I majored in theater and psychology, which both emphasize connecting with other people. This skill is also essential in tutoring. My mother is Argentine and my father is from the United States, and I am fluent in Spanish and English. Having parents from two different countries has also ensured I am comfortable around different cultures and types of people. I'm excited to work with you and your families! Let me know if you have any other questions.
My experiences in the field of education have involved a variety of different areas, including elementary level math, reading, and writing, as well as Chemistry and Biology. As a Neuroscience liberal arts major, I have a background in a wide variety of subjects, allowing me to approach each subject using techniques that integrate methods from different topics. I have experience through a volunteer organization called Project Story Boost in which I tutored elementary school children from 3rd-4th grade in reading and comprehension. As a Big Sister, I also tutored a third grader in math and science. I was also a tutor for an Introductory level college Chemistry course at Bates College, in which I was paired individually with a student who needed assistance in understanding homework and lecture material. I have also been a teaching assistant for two different statistical analysis courses at Wesleyan University in which I held office hours and lectures to help students with their comprehension of the course material. My methods for teaching reading and writing involve integrating fun, exciting techniques that engage the student in the material. By involving different methods of approaching the material, the student will be exposed to the material in different ways, allowing him or her to become interested in the subjects.Though I have mastered the topics I am comfortable tutoring, I treat each tutoring session as a learning process in which the student and I learn the material together as a team. This type of tutoring dynamic fosters a positive learning environment in which the student is able to thrive. This environment allows students to replace the idea that the material is "too hard" with the idea that the material is an "exciting challenge." I am trained in different communication techniques that allow me to accurately assess the weak points for students, and using these points as a baseline for the session, I tailor each session to the student's individual needs. My greatest ambition as a tutor is to inspire children to both find and develop their own passions for learning.
Mr. Chen was my first Mandarin Chinese teacher. He arrived to teach in the 1990s at St. Paul's School, a New England boarding school. As a non-native speaker of Chinese, I sat in Mr. Chen's class behind a desk and studied Chinese. At that time, I was confused and considered dropping the course. But Mr. Chen took me aside and said through hard work and discipline, I could learn the language. This talk inspired me to continue studying. In college, Chinese became more challenging. I had to take dictations, tests, and quizzes. I had to work with other students on skits and dialogues. In the evenings, I listened over and over again to Chinese language audio tapes, and made flash cards for the hundreds of characters we studied. Again, I considered quitting. However, Ms. Liu, my college Chinese teacher encouraged me to go to China. I took her advice and decided to take a year-off to live in Beijing. When I arrived that first time in Beijing, I even had trouble getting to my hotel. But after one summer in China, I was speaking Chinese at a high level of proficiency. I thought in Chinese throughout the day, and even had dreams where I spoke Chinese in the dream. After returning to the U.S. in 2006, I applied to the Chinese Flagship Program at The Ohio State University and won a scholarship from the Department of Defense. The program was a great fit, as I sought greater Chinese language proficiency. During the first year of the Flagship Program, I worked with a mentor, developing expertise in the domain of Chinese media from its earliest beginnings during the Communist revolution, through the Maoist period, and finally to its current state. We also devoted time to reading Chinese short stories, such as Lu Xun's "The True Story of Ah Q" and "A Madman's Diary." Reading these classics, along with reading about China's media gave me better appreciation for the Chinese language, as well as China's history and culture. After the Flagship program, I learned that my true passion for the language and culture would be best expressed through teaching and tutoring. I have spent years studying and learning Chinese and have reached fluency. I view teaching and tutoring as a way to give back what I have learned. Whether it is a particular grammar construction or the use of a particular verb, the moment when it clicks in a student's head and they understand what you are saying is a special moment for any teacher. This past year, I enrolled in a Master of Arts teaching program at Brandeis University. The program is unique in that it specializes in teaching Chinese. There are very few schools in the U.S. which train students to become Chinese teachers. This spring I taught two Chinese classes at Boston Latin School. This experience at Boston Latin School was invaluable, as I received hands-on experience in Chinese teaching and tutoring. As a non-native fluent speaker of Chinese, I have many advantages for the language. I can better explain grammar points having had the experience of learning the language in a classroom as they are. I also can serve as an example to other non-native speakers who are learning Chinese and share an understanding of the process. Students will be able to look up to me as an example of someone who has excelled at a difficult language, and I hope to inspire them to continue to study Chinese. My teaching philosophy is that all students are capable of learning Chinese. I tutor with this thought in mind. In this sense, I can be a strict tutor. I will not let my students off easy. I will push them to answer questions correctly. For example, if a student responds to a question with a one word answer, then I will challenge him to respond with a full sentence. At the same time, if I see a student struggling, I will help them. I seek to empower each student to reach fluency through discipline, hard work, and opportunity.Just like Mr. Chen, my high school Mandarin teacher, and all the other teachers who inspired me, I hope my teaching and experience can inspire more young Americans to become successful Chinese language learners.
I recently graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in Neuroscience, and I'm hoping to eventually become a doctor. As a self-described science nerd, I'm fascinated by the intricacies of how the world around us works, and I think that is infectious to my students. One of my favorite subjects to tutor is Biology because it explains how we ourselves function. My enthusiasm has helped me make science and math engaging and accessible to the students I work with. My experience includes teaching middle school, high school, and college students in both subject specific review and test preparation. I have an approach that is centered around finding the root cause of a students struggles, be it misunderstanding of content, time management, or any other reason, and offering multiple specifically-tailored methods for the student to employ before settling on what works best for them. I aim for my clients to improve as overall students as well, so that they can be successful in the face of any future academic challenges.Aside from my teaching and academic pursuits, my favorite hobbies are playing music and cooking. I play the bass and sitar in any style from Indian classical music to Top 40 Taylor Swift hits. In the kitchen, I love to take a scientific approach to cooking, understanding the chemical reactions underlying why one dinner tasted delicious while another fell flat.
The best part of teaching is when my student "gets" something, and the light bulb turns on. I teach you how to do something - writing, test-taking, study skills - so you can do it on your own in the future.
Proud to say I have begun tutoring through Varsity Tutors. I am a recent college grad who loves teaching and working with students and hopes to give people the wonderful collegiate experience that I have received at Wesleyan University. In my spare time I love to run and am currently training for a marathon. I'm also a passionate visual and auditory learner so I love to see shows, listen to music, and watch movies, all of which help keep me creative and happy!
Hello! I'm Eli, and I'd love to help you prepare for the MCAT or learn biological and chemical subjects. I'm currently taking a few gap years between college and medical school, and with my experiences as a lab manager of a neuroscience lab and as a practicing EMT I can help you boost your MCAT or ace your tough classes!
