I used to be a failure. I was not good at math and I was not (truly) good at any of the sciences. I did not know how to learn at all and I would forget everything I learn in 2 months. People would call me smart but I would feel like a complete fraud. I stuck that fact deep inside my mind so that I can always remember that I was never anything special. However, I turned that fact into strength! It did not matter whether others outpaced me. It did not matter whether someone understood it better than I did. All I had to do was defeat myself; the part of my identity that kept me from my dreams. This is my teaching philosophy. I believe everyone is the same way. Seeing true results can not happen over night. Like exercise, learning requires discipline, and with daily effort, leads to powerful results. I would rebuild foundations so that nothing would collapse along the way. This has been my method of study since my graduation from Forsyth Technical Community College with my Associates in Arts. As a Computer Science Major at University of Greensboro at North Carolina, I learned quickly that caring about correct answers is not enough. I have to be the math itself. I believe working from the philosophical end via mathematical logic then working up to higher math is the path for success in the field. As one may suspect, Mathematics, Computer Science, and the Natural Sciences are my prime interests (and the subjects I tutor). They carry big importance to me because I have the goals of developing my own computerized agricultural, health analytic, and photovoltaic system. These goals can only be possible by studying their related fields. I spread this knowledge through my history of interacting with students as a Computer Science lab instructor. I would guide students through their java assignments and refresh key concepts that would be important for their success. In addition, I helped underprivileged students at a local high school in their mathematics and science classes, in hopes that they too will see its uses. To conclude, I truly enjoy teaching. I want to spread the importance the sciences have on our lives and I want everyone to succeed. So hopefully, I will have an opportunity to share my passions soon (through tutoring of course)!

I value the opportunity to receive high quality education afforded to me very much as, in my view, education is the only means that helped me achieve independence. I am an independent and contributing citizen who has financial independence. That is the primary drive behind my passion for teaching. Basically, I hope that everyone who deserves to receive quality education will have the opportunity to enjoy that.In this information overloading era, too often we don't lack access to information. Rather, what we lack is the skill to weed out noises, lies, and falsehoods from all the information available to us. Knowing this, in my teaching practice, I try my best to inculcate a critical thinking method in my students so that they can achieve lifetime learning on their own. I will teach students how to gather information and evaluate the voracity of it, and how to apply good information to solve a problem. My goal is to help student to internalize information so that it can be elevated to knowledge, which might also be elevated to wisdom if a student knows to integrate information.

I hold a master's degree in English from Boston College, and I have 5-6 years of tutoring experience, depending on the subject. I also teach college level writing and English.I tutor ESL/ELL, English, Writing, Editing, Grammar and Style, SAT Reading, and Literature. I most enjoy tutoring writing, since that's what I teach, and literature, since that's what I enjoy studying most.My tutoring (and teaching) style is relatively informal, since I like to make sure students are comfortable both with me and the material. I also find that a more casual setting increases students' willingness to learn and their ability to retain material. My goal is to make sure that the student not only understands the material, but is confident in their understanding, since that leads to better grades and, ultimately, a better education. When I'm not teaching or tutoring, I enjoy music, cooking, writing, watching Jeopardy obsessively, and being outside with my dogs.

I'm a proud graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Rhetoric, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where I was awarded a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. Over my eight years of teaching, I have worked with students in writing essays, understanding material assigned to them and material that they use in writing argument and research papers. As a tutor, I can help you with beginning your essays, developing them, and suggesting ways to make them better. Because my interests are diverse, I can help you move ahead with assignments in many subject areas, especially ones involving research and writing. I believe that one-on-one contact with students is important, recognizing each as a unique human being, drawing out of them interests that connect with their assignments. I work with students from a wide range of ages, all of them trying to learn how to communicate in writing and also students who are taking public speaking classes. In addition to an intense love of reading good writing, I do some writing of my own, mostly fiction and personal essays. Movies are a strong interest, too. I love seeing new places, but getting to know places right in my own neighborhood is fascinating, and I often break out my camera and take pictures of people, places and things that I want to preserve and share with others.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro with two degrees in Communication Studies and English with a minor in Rhetoric and Public Advocacy. I am also a part of the Phi Beta Kappa honors society. Before attending UNCG, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Wake Technical Community College with an Associate of Arts degree. I have won awards for both Public Speaking and Presentation, as well as Writing, specifically in the categories of Creative Writing, Academic Writing, and Personal Narratives. My highest honor is winning UNCG's 2024 English Excellence Award for my superior academic achievement in the Rhetoric and Public Advocacy minor. While my awards demonstrate my dedication to academic success, my time at UNCG's Writing Center demonstrates my dedication to the success of others. I completed an intensive 5-month practicum learning the history and methodology of teaching before completing a year as a Writing Center Consultant and Writing Center Student Mentor. During this time, I had the privilege of working with students from all backgrounds, life situations, and skill levels. Helping students overcome personal challenges, find success in their studies, and, ultimately, build their confidence, quickly became one of the biggest joys in my life. My philosophy is to meet students right where they are with compassion and understanding, regardless of their circumstances, and help them grow as both students and people. I also believe in the establishment of mutual respect and responsibility between tutors and their students. I do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status. I know that I couldn't have achieved what I did, or overcome the numerous significant personal obstacles I did, without the support of my wonderful professors and student success coaches. I look forward to the opportunity to be both your tutor and cheerleader.
