I am a mechanical engineering student at Stony Brook University in an accelerated B.E./M.S. program. Currently I am finishing up both of my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I decided to become a tutor because I love academia, and I use math as well as physics daily. After my first few sessions I came to love it, and I have been doing it for a number of years now. I have tutored students ranging from elementary school through college, but my favorite level to help students is high school. In my sessions I like to show students the reason behind everything. I believe if you know why you're doing something, you can more easily understand how to do it. When I have some free time I like to work on small engineering projects. I just got my hands on a programmable micro-controller, and I have been making it do some pretty neat things! I also like to go biking.

I believe that one of the biggest flaws in education is the lack of intimacy between teachers and their pupils. Instead of teaching students en masse, a more optimal approach is to make each lesson fit for the particular student. I have carried out this philosophy while tutoring in the past and I intend to continue doing so in the present and in the future.

I got my bachelors at Washington University in St. Louis, double majoring in Environmental Earth Science and Germanic Language and Literature, and minoring in Writing. Currently I'm working towards my PhD in Marine Science at Stony Brook University (NY), doing research in the field of marine biogeochemistry. That's a bit of a mouthful, but basically it means I study the way living things interact with the chemistry of the ocean, and how that interaction gets recorded in mud and rock. Based on this expertise, I enjoy tutoring in general science, chemistry, and earth science.I also have a solid foundation in the language arts, having worked for three years as a Writing Mentor at Washington University in St. Louis. During this time, I was trained to help students with writing projects at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to line-editing. When I studied abroad in Germany for a year, I worked as a tutor for German students with English writing projects. This was a wonderful experience that allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of English academic writing by approaching it from a non-native perspective, while simultaneously improving my fluency in German, which I have studied for ten years. Following these experiences, I also enjoy tutoring in writing, English, German, and the Reading/Writing/Language sections of standardized tests (ACT, SAT, and GRE). My favorite subject to tutor is writing; I love to write myself, and there is nothing better than being able to help students develop confidence and enjoyment in their own writing.When I'm tutoring in any subject, my focus is not on the completion of a short-term task, like a specific assignment or test; rather, my goal is always to use the task at hand to help the student become a better reader, writer, learner, and thinker. I am an experienced math tutor and have tutored all math levels from pre-algebra to multivariable calculus/differential equations. I am an adjunct professor and freelance writer with a PhD in history. I write and teach a lot about women's studies, cultural history, and transnational studies with a particular emphasis on the Modern Middle East and US-Turk relations. As for teaching and outreach: Ive found that making the material pertinent and connecting it to who you are and where you want to be will make it come alive. Hence, in tutoring and teaching I enjoy teasing out the material into a story. That way we have something to entertain us as we build a timeline and craft a memory of the past, of peoples, and of communities.I'm also the author of numerous books, the most recent being Comics as History, Comics as Literature and book chapters, reference entries, book reviews, and journal articles. In teaching and writing I like to focus on how to engage and make the story come to life.I also publish travel literature and some fiction outside of academia and serve as co-chair of the European Association of American Studies Women's Steering Committee.This past summer I crafted travel writing while spelunking in the Iowas Women's Archives and the Oregon State University Archives, as my co-writer and I have been crafting a discursive examination of food safety, activism, and grassroots women's voices. This project Safety For Our Souls has received funding from several libraries. That being said . . . the fuel that makes this endless hard work worthwhile is engaging students and building skills in creative ways that make the mundane really feel less like work and more like an excursion into something entertaining.

I originally began my undergraduate career as a nursing major, because I wanted a job where I could learn science as well as help people. In my sophomore year, I took the chemistry nursing course and it was the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I decided to change my major to chemistry and pursue a different path. This was a difficult decision for me since I was not one of the people who thought science was easy and never had to study, I had to work very hard to understand the concepts and work through the problems.My struggles with chemistry everyday and my ability to work hard and learn anyway are some of the reasons why I teach. I have privately tutored students in social studies, social sciences, literature, math and some science. My approach to teaching is very student centered because I think each student needs to be treated as an individual to maximize their educational experience. In my spare time, I enjoy music, art and the beach.

I am currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MA/LS) with focus on Business and Marketing at Stony Brook University, NY, USA. Since 2008, I have been working as a Teaching Assistant and Substitute Teacher in private and public schools in NY USA.I have served for three years as the Head of the Business & Marketing Department in Bahria College, Islamabad, Pakistan. During my time as Head, I worked directly under the Principal to develop new curricula for A’ Levels and O’ Levels, interviewing new candidates, organizing college-wide events, organizing tours for new students and managing all associated paperwork and correspondence.Simultaneously, I had the privilege of teaching economics and business studies to the O’ & A’ Levels (the British System equivalent to Grade 9-12 & first two years of Undergraduate Studies).In that capacity, I strongly believe in a philosophy of lifelong learning to meet the challenges of global competence. Keeping this vision in mind, I have been able to remain sensitive to the needs of students for exploring comprehensive multi-disciplinary studies, preparation for work, academic and social competence and a sense of citizenship that incorporates the cultures of all students into instruction.These are some of the courses I have completed towards accomplishing my Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MA/LS) that have widened my perspective and vision towards HR and its relation with the Business needs and Management: Ethics in Management, Organizational Change Management, Foundations of Human Resource Management, Survey of Labor/Employment Relations, HR Management Workshop, and The Uses and Abuses of Technology.

I have my masters in Occupational Therapy and graduated from NYU. I also have my Bachelors of Art in Psychology and graduated from Stony Brook University. I have been working with students with special needs for 9 years. I primarily work with fine motor skills including handwriting and formation of letters. I collaborate with teachers and will work with them in the classroom and follow the common core standards. I also communicate with parents and will work on meeting the goals of the student. I graduated summa cum laude from Stony Brook University with a Bachelor's in Linguistics. I am currently attending Columbia University for my Master's in Communication Sciences and Disorders.I have over 5 years of experience tutoring elementary to middle school students. I have prepared students for the New York State English Language Arts and Mathematics Tests and the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). I am a graduate from SUNY Stony Brook with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Arts in Teaching. I have tutored and taught students of all ages, from kindergarten through 12th grade, and even some college students. I love to tutor many different subjects, but Social Studies, Math, Literature, and Writing/Language Arts are my favorites. Social Studies and Literature allow students to discuss their own ideas and opinions about the subject, while Math requires more problem solving to best learn the concepts. I believe that learning, not just knowing, comes from asking the question 'why?' Only by thoroughly understand 'why' can learning occur, and learning allows people to successfully engage with the world around them. Outside of teaching, I enjoy baseball, reading, movies, music, and playing a variety of games.

National Expert Xilin Chen has been teaching chess for more than 5 years and has a USCF rating of 2100. Xilin started learning chess in high school and soon become passionate to the world of 64 squares. He then helped his high school team to win the team 1st place trophy in a scholastic tournament. I graduated from CUNY Hunter College with my Masters in English Literature in 2019, marking the end to a long period of intense study and travel. Since then, I have gone on to become an instructor and tutor for first-year undergraduates and older adult students at my local community college, where I have helped to coach students on ways to improve their writing and research strategies for their schoolwork and other projects. While my field of study focuses primarily on English Literature, I am eager to learn more about History, Philosophy, and the many areas of science.I try to maintain a relaxed environment while working with students, treating my one-on-one sessions like friendly conversations, which I find helps to put students at their ease even in the face of approaching deadlines. That being said, my sessions can be as in-depth as needed. While I am happy to advise on grammar and spelling, I will switch the focus to important content concerns if I see fundamental issues that need to be addressed. My goal is to help students stay on task, and to ensure that their arguments in writing are supported by strong details and the appropriate use of evidence.Teaching undergraduates has given me a unique perspective as I now approach my first year teaching as a certified teacher for high school English. I have seen for myself the importance of college readiness, and I have made it a professional goal of mine to better prepare students for the rigors of academic writing later in life.When I am not reading for research or for fun, I'm a shameless nerd, and I love to talk about my latest hyperfixation in the worlds of movies, TV, anime, or video games.
