I take interest in the subject of communication and how it shapes people's minds and hearts. Words influence meaning, and meaning colors the ideas and feelings we use to understand the world around us, always reflexively informing our engagement with ourselves and each other.

I have a strong interest and passion in the teaching career. With my past experiences working with both elementary and high school aged students, I feel that I have a diverse experience background that will bring a lot to this tutoring program. Throughout the years, I have developed a passion for the career and a love for inspiring learners. I am very interested in applying for your current open position as a tutor. As a 2013 graduate from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, I am fully equipped to begin a teaching career. I have had experience with children from age two to age eighteen, through my many experiences with schools while attending Duquesne University, through substitute teaching, and through full-time teaching this school year. I have had many experiences with suburban and urban school districts as well. My student teaching experience was in the third grade classroom in a suburban school outside of Pittsburgh and my current school is an urban school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.Through my experiences at Duquesne University and afterwards, I have truly been able to develop a passion for teaching, and I feel that I am fully equipped with the necessary skills to become a great tutor. It is my goal to combine my range of experience with my passion and enthusiasm, to make a positive contribution to your tutoring program.
I am a former teacher and writer. Currently I am a tutor and a writer. I worked with elementary students of all ages. I also assisted in coordinating adult education programs at a community college. Through a local workforce board position, I taught adult learners. My Bachelor degree is from the University of Maryland in Elementary Education and I acquired a Master's Degree in Counselor Education from Duquesne University. Post Master's coursework took place at the University of Denver in Higher Education and I am currently finishing a class in English as a Second Language. I am a lifelong learner. I believe it is important to respect each student's uniqueness. Helping students grow academically and seeing their confidence levels increase in their learning environments are important goals for me. I enjoy tutoring a variety of subjects including basic reading skills and specific elementary math skills and others as needed. I love teaching reading to all ages and seeing skill development, especially in comprehension. One of my first published works focused on classroom ideas from my first hand experience. I also co-authored a book about using sports statics in basic elementary math. The idea was born from a student I tutored many years ago.
My belief is that all students of all levels and types are capable of learning. It is just a matter of putting in the effort and taking the correct approach. In some cases it is a matter of putting together a series of small victories and gains before reaching the ultimate goal, but all students can get there!
I teach AP English Language and high school Social Studies. My deepest passion is writing. I began tutoring English and Spanish when I was in high school and continued through college and graduate school. I have tutored grade school, high school, and college students, and love seeing the "lightbulb" moments after the weeks of hard work. During my student teaching, I worked with my U.S. History students and saw their grades improve by as much as two letter grades in a few weeks of applied practice. I enjoy working with all students, including those with 504 plans and IEPs.
I learned economics in business school at Duquesne University and subsequently worked in wholesale banking and investment banking. My approach to teaching economics is that you cannot live in the US and not have a basic understanding of economics. The terminology and the drawing of graphs may elude you, but the concepts are embedded in you. I use aspects of my students lives and their interests to create meaning. Economics can be fun and economics can be exciting if you have the right instructor
I'm a PhD candidate studying Clinical Psychology. Before that I completed a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling at New York University and a B.A. in Sociology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. I have graded hundreds of term papers over the years, and have led workshops focusing on academic writing. I care about my students' success and utilize my training in counseling psychology in the service of understanding each individual's needs and strengths. My areas of expertize are in:(1) Teaching students how to learn: Studying and learning should be challenging, meaningful, and empowering. Learning should not meaningless and boring. Although many of us have spent several years studying, rarely are we taught how to learn. I offer my clients strategies and approaches to learning that emphasize efficiency, balance, and self-care. I also work with clients to address the blocks that get in the way of a healthy, productive, and meaningful approach to learning. Specifically, I work with my clients to manage test-anxiety, and to approach their studies and academic challenges in a focused and grounded way.(2): Writing skills: Teaching an approach to writing that balances academic formality with creative self-expression and critical thinking.(3): Reading/Critical Thinking skills: I teach reading and critical reasoning skills through focusing on rapid vocabulary acquisition and critical thinking. My approach is evidence-based and draws on 'spaced-repetition' learning methods to facilitate rapid gains in vocabulary.
I look forward to learning about you and helping you get through your reading, writing, public speaking, social studies, test-taking and organizational challenges. Education has defined much of my career for over a decade. I began this path in high school, assisting teachers in an elementary classroom and helping out other high school students with math or Spanish courses. Since then, I have expanded my acumen to a variety of ages and needs. I recently taught middle-school students in public speaking and current events seminars during the school year and algebra and pre-algebra during the summer, and I currently am an adjunct professor of philosophy and an online course facilitator at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. In my free time, I enjoy reading, particularly history or science books; following various sports, especially college basketball; and playing computer games and board games with my wife and friends. I also enjoy a good coffee shop, whether to get work done or to socialize.I am currently preparing to begin a Master's of Teaching program at VCU this fall and have continued to excel in the math and history courses I need to round out my teaching endorsements. Because my future career path focuses on teaching at the high school level, I have a preference for tutoring math (especially algebra through calculus) and history, along with writing and my current subject of philosophy. Besides my career motivations, I find that I stand out the most as a tutor in these areas because of my capability in clearly presenting complex material and my ability to grasp the diverse perspectives of my students. This ability to clarify complex ideas is important to tutoring, but what often gets overlooked is the other side of the equation: properly understanding the questions being asked. I have frequently encountered decent teachers who can effectively outline a subject in a lecture but who have trouble comprehending where their students might be confused, often because they are too removed from the way the students' brains work. The best teachers and tutors are those who not only can teach material clearly but who realize the points of confusion, which vary from student to student (and class to class). When I teach a subject, I prepare lessons, but I also understand the need to be adaptable, to adjust the lesson on the fly, as everyone learns differently and encounters difficulties at different stages. I developed this adaptability and this understanding of a multitude of perspectives from my diverse teaching experiences and also from my multidisciplinary educational background.I attained my Bachelor's degree from Xavier University, a Jesuit university in Cincinnati, Ohio, where I was enrolled in an interdisciplinary program in history, philosophy, and political science, which also involved a minor concentration in psychology. I then went on to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where I received a Master's degree in philosophy, a subject hospitable to my wide-ranging aptitude and curiosity. The diverse capabilities have reinforced both my competence and enthusiasm in a number of areas, which I bring to bear readily as a tutor. I can appreciate the perspective of a student strong in math who needs help with the verbal section of a standardized test or the viewpoint of a good writer who might be struggling in math courses, as I have immersed myself with a wide variety of subjects and consequently a wide variety of ways of thinking (not to mention diverse classmates). Though my comprehension of various subjects is important, my knack for relating to the way others think is likely my strongest feature as an educator.
I have been both a voice teacher and music therapist since 1980, and believe that singing is healthy for us emotionally, physically, and spiritually! I have a PhD in Music Education/Therapy, an MA in Vocal Performance, and have taught students at all levels, from beginners to graduate university vocal majors. My teaching credo is that anyone can benefit from singing. People may think they cannot sing because others have told them that. In most cases, by working on students' listening, musical, or motor skills, they can find their natural voice! I can also teach music theory, music history, music fundamentals, world music, and music and wellness.Although my academic achievements are in music, my Jewish faith and studies are equally as essential to me, and I am glad to share my knowledge of Judaism and Biblical Hebrew with you.

I am currently a student at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where I am working towards a degree in Biochemistry and Mathematics. I currently have my mathematics minor and am starting a research position in a biochemistry lab. For the past three years, I have been involved with the tutoring of my peers in many areas such as general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and a variety of math courses. During this time I have been guided by the philosophy that learning is best accomplished in an atmosphere where knowledge is an open dialogue. Through my experience tutoring here at Duquesne, I have found that the most productive, thought provoking, and genuinely enjoyable times studying have been those where an open dialogue or conversation has led to the systematic understanding and solving of a problem. With this in mind, the thing I stress the most in my teaching is that being open to different perspectives and expressing your thoughts is key in opening the door to a deeper understanding in any area of study or life.I am always up for a good conversation, especially about T.V shows (Buffy the Vampire Slayer anyone!?) and music ( I am a huge Indie music fan). In my free time I love to play guitar, go out to eat, ski, and hang out with my friends.
I consider myself to be friendly, God-fearing and dedicated to improving the lives of all my family, friends and people with whom I come in contact. This includes not only spirit and body but also one's mind. Learning is not only important but it is worthwhile as it helps develop one's mind.
