Since I was young I knew that I loved work related to helping others. When I was in high school I spent my lunch periods volunteering and tutoring in a program where I taught students who were between the ages of 14 to 21 reading skills. Many of the students I worked with had physical and intellectual disabilities, which caused a growing passion in me for working with this population. In college I spent summers working as a job coach, helping adults 18 and over with disabilities find work, and then I would help train them in the positions they received. In addition to studying education in college, I studied literature, as I have always been fascinated with how and why people act the way they have throughout history. Over the last six years I have taught in a public middle school in Jackson Heights queens. I have taught 3 years of seventh grade, and 3 years of 8th grade English Language Arts. Throughout these years I have worked with English language learners, students with special needs, and honors students. For the last two years and the upcoming school year my teaching program is focused on gifted and talented students. I have become a teacher who is eager to figure out how to challenge students in a way that they find valuable. After high school, I attended the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and began studying literature and education. I finished earning my bachelor's degree in middle and high school English education closer to home at The City College of New York. I began teaching immediately, and earned my Masters in Special Education at the same time. I have taken numerous professional courses on teaching English to students of all levels, and have most recently been professionally involved in developing my ability to work with gifted and talented / honors students. At the school where I teach I helped run the debate team for 3 years, and am currently in charge of the school's newspaper and journalism club. I am planning on continuing my education and am considering starting a new focus in creative writing, an area that I personally enjoy and have made an important part of my classroom over the years.I am dedicated to teach to student's needs and help them obtain strategies that best fit the type of learner they are. My approach to teaching is to assess student strength and weakness, and to help them become aware of this so that they can capitalize on what they do well, and learn ways to effectively approach what they have trouble with. I am passionate about learning and seeing others succeed. I love all things English Language Arts, and am always willing to give my best shot at working with any student to help them improve in this area.

Hello Scholars and dedicated parents of scholars! My name is Whitney and I am a full time English tutor. I taught AP Language and Composition for 3 years, English III for 2 years, Composition I (for college credit) English IV for one year. I have my Bachelors in English with a concentration in literature from CUNY City College and I'm currently working on a Master of Arts Degree in Creative Writing and Literature at Harvard. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and writing, cooking, and taking my rambunctious pup to the park. When I was in 11th grade, I struggled so much in English class so I know what it's like. I look forward to being able to help you reach your ELA goals!
I am currently a creative writing major at The City College of New York (CCNY) and an aspiring poet, novelist, and playwright.I graduated from the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) with an Associate of Arts in Creative Writing with High Honors, and while earning my degree, I was the Vice President of CSN's Creative Writing Club and part of their editorial board for their literary and visual arts journal: Neon Dreams. I am also the winner of Steiner's Emerging Voices Scholarship for poetry and Neon Dreams' Monthly Writing Contest for poetry at CSN and the Goodman Fund Poetry Award at CCNY.Before earning my degree at CSN, I tutored students in English and math for the "No Child Left Behind" act which, in fact, had inspired me to go back to school and receive a formal education. Reading and writing are my passions, and I believe that anyone can find the joys of learning with the right attitude and proper motivation which is why I decided to get back into tutoring students.Apart from academia, I enjoy reading and writing (of course), listening to music, watching Broadway musicals and plays, exploring the city and, occasionally, revisiting old video games from my childhood.
As a bilingual teacher for students with disabilities, I believe that I can make a great impact on their lives by using techniques that can only achieve confidence and create hope in them in order to learn new skills. It is important that students trust and know that educators care about them and can connect with students by learning about their customs and culture. This will allow students to become more comfortable with learning a new language and not give up when mistakes are made. Most of the students that come to my class have multiple disabilities and they do not speak or understand the English language. At times this affects their behavior because they refuse to learn the language either because they are embarrassed for making mistakes or they do not understand the importance of the learning the language for their professional life. As an educator, my responsibility is to connect with them and show them that it is okay to make mistakes because that is how they will learn and achieve success. Teachers need to always improve their teaching techniques and be open to learn from students because what might be work for one student may not work for the other student. It would be an honor to become part of Varsity Tutors.
I started my career attending a military high school in Nigeria where I learned basic discipline such as being timely, planning my schedule, and leadership skills. I then proceeded to a 6th form school where I obtained an Advanced Level Certificate in chemistry, mathematics, and physics from the Cambridge university examination board in Nigeria. After my 6th form education, I moved to New York and started college at BMCC. I spent about three semesters at BMCC then I transferred to City College where I intend to obtain a bachelors degree in bio-medical engineering. My future aspiration after my BSC is to go to graduate school for my masters and PHD at Princeton University. I also intend to join the United States Army where I plan to practice my bio-medical profession by helping the disabled veterans. I took particular interest in math back in Nigeria where I tutored students preparing them for their GED exam. I also volunteered with New York Cares (NYC), and I tutored in projects like computer training for adult and math games for middle and junior school students. Volunteering at NYC helped improve my teaching skills and expose me to knowing how and why students are scared of math. My approach to tutoring has basically been student dependent where I work at the student's pace and ensure accurate learning in my teaching sessions. Also I make math feel like its alive by using life examples and approach. I love playing soccer and watching movies at my free time.
As a medical student at the CUNY School of Medicine and a Full IB Diploma recipient of Yonkers High School, I have always found an affection for the learning community. As an older sister of two younger brothers, I have grown up tutoring and helping my brothers in all subjects focusing especially on English, Mathematics, and the Sciences. My passion for the medical sciences, chemistry, and biology led me to pursue a bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences and tutor in subjects such as biochemistry, immunology, virology as well as standardized exams like SATs and ACTs as well as IB Exams. My students have always appreciated my patience and dedication to helping them succeed and achieve their goals.
My love for English began in my childhood reading Tony Hillerman, R.L. Stine, and Mary Higgins Clark. At the High School of Fashion Industries, my English class read Macbeth - "You should be women, and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so..." My English teacher, Dr. Bobo, would call me to read with her, and we intertwined together like in a dance. No other student reached my enthusiasm. I am a graduate of Hunter College. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Film and English. I also graduated from City College with an M.S. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). After graduation, I began to teach ESL as an Adjunct Instructor in Canal Street. Languages are amazing because they are pieces (letters, sound, words) that students need to put together to use in practice. I love teaching pronunciation, reading, writing, and listening. With students, I am patient and answer all their questions. To have fun, I use games, you tube, songs, and movies. Learning English or improving someone's English definitely improves a student's quality of life in America.
Hi there! I'm a data-driven problem solver with a background in analytics, logistics and finance operations, and I enjoy helping students build confidence working with Excel, data, and structured thinking. Whether you're learning the basics or trying to make sense of complex datasets, I focus on making things feel practical, clear, and actually usable, not just theoretical. What makes my approach different is that I use Excel the same way it's used in real business environments: managing large datasets, solving problems, and improving workflows. I can help you go from core formulas and data organization all the way to advanced tools like PivotTables, Power Query, and building clean, structured reports and dashboards. Beyond Excel, I help students develop stronger analytical thinkinglearning how to break down problems, identify patterns, and approach solutions step by step. A lot of students don't struggle because things are too hard, but because they haven't been shown a simple way
I graduated from CUNY City College’s Biochemistry program with honors in liberal arts and science research. As a freshman, I began workshop leading in Introductory Chemistry courses and, soon thereafter, progressed to Organic, Quantitative and Thermodynamic Chemistry.I enjoyed my interaction with the students so much that, after graduating, I decided to adjunct lecture at a community college. There, I welcomed the exciting challenge of engaging adult learners in an introductory biology course with labs. Recently, I have garnered some extensive private experience tutoring middle to high-school age students in Algebra, Geometry, ELA, Chemistry and Biology, as an independent contractor for a couple of companies.I look forward to working with you to achieve the success to which you aspire and are capable!
With such a high demand for STEM in today's marketplace, there's a shortage of STEM education in many NYC public schools. My goal is to make a motivational impact on the minds of our youth in the same way I was motivated from high school onto college. In 2017, I graduated from the City College of New York with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences and have since started pursuing my M.D. at the CUNY School of Medicine.I first began tutoring in high school through the MSPinNYC2 program, which is where I first discovered my passion to help others.Over the last few years, I've had multiple teaching and tutoring opportunities with students ranging from first grade to college, in both one-on-one and group settings. My main focus lies in biology, chemistry, and math. This fuels my belief that all students have the ability to understand and master STEM related topics!
I am a teacher by vocational calling. I had been teaching for over 30 years at all levels from elementary to graduate education. I love to help students with their learning process. I am a very open, friendly, and enthusiastic person. My goal is to understand your academic needs and work with you to achieve it.
I am a second year in the Sophie Davis Program for Biomedical Education. I hold an Associates Degree from Bard College, which I obtained while still in high school. As a pre-medical student, I have a deep love for the sciences but I also love learning new things. My favorite subject to tutor would be Spanish but I am also proficient in English, Writing, Biology, and Algebra. I have been tutoring for four years and have experience tutoring elementary to high school students. I believe that when tutoring I should allow students to explain their confusion so that we can work together towards the advancement of their knowledge. Just lecturing or telling you the answer isn't enough! Outside of school, I love cooking, exercising, reading, doing research, and volunteering.
After graduating in 2011 from the City College of New York, I worked as a consultant for Dr. Dewey who then recruited me from Brookhaven National Lab to the Feinstein institutes for Medical Research. That year, I entered the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, and joined the inaugural class as one of three PhD students of the new medical school. My dissertation project interrogated pre-clinical sex differences in the metabolic neural patterns associated with opioid pain management using18-fludeoxyglucose (18FDG) and micro positron emission tomography (MicroPET). I was able to show that distinct metabolic patterns of pain were sex-specific, and confirmed that an animal model could be useful in revealing distinct metabolic indicators of opioid withdrawal and improve the efficacy of therapeutic intervention. As a Research Scientist at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, I oversee operations of the MicroPET imaging facility as part of the Center for Neurosciences. I have recentl studies include studies of the extracellular cold-inducible RNA-binding protein, (CIRP-/-) and wild type (WT) mice, before and after exposure to binge-alcohol levels. By quantifying glucose metabolism with 18FDG and MicroPET, and using brain-mapping analysis of the imaging data, we can determine if CIRP plays a role in alcohol-induced cognitive impairment. I have served as mentor to many undergraduate and some high school students, and very much enjoy sharing my knowledge base with those that enjoy science.

When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy traveling, exploring new places, spending time with my family, and giving back to my community through volunteer work.
While going to college I always had an interest in science and math. I enjoy imparting the Math and science knowledge to students who did not understand the subject as well as I did. I got a job as a tutor during my first year in college and have continued to tutor because I realized that I loved tutoring and I like to help people achieve their goals.Over the years while working in various capacities such as a network engineer, a process engineer and an environmental engineer I always tried to devote time to helping students. I tutored high school students, college students and adult learners. I feel a sense of accomplishment when my students do well in the subject area that we are working on together.

I am a recent graduate of the Teachers College, Columbia University, Technology Specialist K-12 program. Technology Specialists are trained to couple digital devices and applications with curriculum to facilitate learning transfer and boost student collaboration. While studying for my degree, I completed three hundred hours of student teaching and observation in public, private, elementary and high schools in districts throughout New York City. This experience fortified the ideology that utilizing virtual software diminishes didacticism, encourages student engagement and creates highly interactive learning environments.Prior to attending Teachers College, I obtained a Master of Science degree from Full Sail University, as an Innovation and Entrepreneurship major. This field of study provides students who wish to build start-up companies in the technology field with all the skills required to do so. The culmination of my studies resulted in the construction of a web-based, media company that coalesces viewers from around the world, in order to foster the transfer of socio-cultural awareness. My initial introduction to the classroom occurred upon graduating from the City College of New York. I was offered a permanent position as a third grade assistant teacher at the Ralph Bunch Elementary School in Harlem. There, I assisted students in lesson comprehension by reiterating classroom subject matter in small groups of three to five students. As well, by implementing innovative learning strategies, I helped the lead teacher propel our students well past expectations. As a Varsity Tutor, I am best suited to help elementary and middle school students strengthen their reading, comprehension and writing skills. I have a myriad of fun and interactive, virtual applications at my disposal that are designed to significantly increase students' reading fluency and understanding, as well as their writing ability.
Hello everyone! I am a current third year medical student who is pursuing a medical career today thanks to a few very special mentors in my academic life. My goal as a tutor is to instill in my students an excitement for learning that encourages them to reach higher goals on their own. I believe math is the gateway subject that allows students to build confidence and tackle virtually every other subject. I also love learning and speaking new languages, which is a cultural window to a world of people that we were never privy to before. I would like to pass this love of languages on to my students as well.

I have graduated from CUNY - The City College of New York on Fall 2020. I am passionate about helping students since I was in high school. When I see students coming up with their own study techniques, it inspires me. I believe that every student is different. The same strategy will not work for everyone. My goal is to influence the student enough to come up with their own technique. A teacher can only open the door to knowledge, but the student has to be intrigued enough to go through the door.
I take pleasure in helping students bridge the gap between the known and the unknown.

I love what I do, and my goal is to always create relationships with students that allow them to thrive. Connecting the work to student interests, allowing for discussion, incorporating humor, and addressing text anxiety, are among the few strategies that have resulted in my students' academic achievement. I'm all about building students' confidence with the subject and creating an environment where they feel comfortable making and learning from mistakes. I am excited to share my knowledge and love of math with students outside of my classroom. Let's work!
Hi there! My name is Zach. I'm a PhD at Harvard studying German philosophy and classics (Greek and Latin). Next year, I will be starting law school to pursue my professional passion, tax law. I am deeply committed to the language and LSAT skills I've developed and I love to tutor students of all levels in these subjects. I can't imagine a life without teaching. My favorite part of teaching is helping students come to love -- or at least appreciate -- the details that make up complex subject matters. My favorite moment with any student is when the student realizes how fascinating a subject matter is after really mastering all of the "dry" details. When my students start internalizing the LSAT or languages I am teaching them, I know I am doing my job.I graduate summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from CUNY Macaulay Honors College in New York City, and started teaching undergraduate and graduate classes during my last year there. At Harvard, I have earned the Derek Bok Certificate for Excellence in Teaching three separate times. I have taught students as young as 14 and as old as 85.German: I studied abroad in Osnabrck, Lower Saxony and Berlin, where I earned my C2 certificate (near-native proficiency) in German. While in Germany, I took classes, taught in German, on Greek and Latin philology. I have taught beginning, intermediate, and advanced German at both regular and intensive paces at Harvard and CUNY.Greek and Latin: I am standing faculty at the Greek/Latin Institute, a famously intensive classical languages boot camp in New York City. I have taught students from all around the world and at all ages there. I have also taken all of the most advanced Greek and Latin coursework at Harvard.I studied comparative literature (French, Italian, and English) as an undergrad alongside my studies of classics. For my masters degree, I had to pass a three-part exam at Harvard on the history of German literature. My knowledge of literature is broad and deep!I earned a 174 on the LSAT (99th percentile).Ready to get to work and dive into the weeds? Want to know more about what working together would look like? I would love to hear from you.

I have been an educator for 10 years in both the NYC and Miami metropolitan areas and can honestly say I love what I do. After graduating from NYU as an undergraduate, I received my master's degree in education from CUNY City College as I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue a career in education. With many years of experience in and out of the classroom, I have seen firsthand how students learn differently and how important it is to meet each student where they are at. Most importantly, learning should be fun and I love to use music and art as tools to make any lesson more engaging. I am patient and understanding and will always make sure to listen to every question asked. I earned a Master's of Science degree in Education from CUNY, City College of New York.I have extensive teaching and tutoring experience as a former New York City Teaching Fellow, where I worked as a Special Educator for grades 1 - 5 in the NYCDOE.After graduation, I tutored for Club Z for grades 5 - 7 in ELA, Writing and Math, before accepting a position as the program chair at Globe Institute of Technology's Associate degree program in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing Management. I am currently a Substitute Teacher mainly in secondaryschool settings for a wide variety of subjects (ranging from Robotics to Art).I really enjoy tutoring English Language Arts, Math and Science because students are typically most challenged by these subjects. My tutoring style is differentiated and aligned with the students learning style and interests. In my pedagogical experience, I have found project-based teaching methodologies to be most effective.I believe that these methods are successful with students because it customizes instruction. Once students can directly filter instruction through their own ambition, application follows and skills are developed as the final result. Student inspiration is the key to engagement and creates the bridge between concept to application in the academic process. My personal interests stem from my first career in the fashion industry. I enjoy studying textiles and exploring color through art, painting and design. These hobbies strongly indicate my own learning style, as a visual learner. Research shows that most learners are visual as well so I always make visual references available, to reinforce the materials that I share. It is a highly effective strategy and my not so secret weapon. I look forward to working with students and supporting their learning. I truly believe that education is a key that unlocks dreams!

Tutors from City College can help you adjust to the institution's academic standards and expectations, especially if you're working toward completing your degree at City College or transferring to a four-year program. They understand both the strengths of your coursework at City College and how it prepares you for upper-level classes. Whether you need help in a specific subject or with the transition itself, connecting with a tutor who knows City College's programs can make the adjustment smoother.
Personalized tutoring lets you work at your own pace with a tutor who can focus entirely on your learning. Rather than keeping up with a classroom full of students, your tutor can slow down on tough concepts, skip material you already know, and spend extra time on your weak areas. A City College tutor can tailor explanations to your learning style and connect material to examples you care about. This individualized approach, backed by the tutor's institutional knowledge, helps you build confidence and mastery faster than classroom instruction alone.
