My name is Michael. I have done a lot of teaching at Boston University for Computer Science and Programming Languages. I like teaching and tutoring a lot since I enjoy seeing students finally get the knowledge they need to solve their problems. My teaching style is to lead students into the right direction and give them enough examples to understand the way to solve the problems. I am looking forward to seeing you all soon.

I am an educator of 15+ years, primarily in English/humanities, though I occasionally dabble in math/science and such. I hold a Masters in Education specializing in secondary education, but I've worked with a wide variety of student demographics: K-12, college/university, returning students, ESL/ELL, gifted and/or reluctant learners, etc. I enjoy the challenge of stepping outside of my comfort zone in terms of teaching assignments, and I believe my passion for being in the classroom rubs off on my students. My teaching philosophy includes having a learner-centered growth mindset that takes into account students' social-emotional health and personalized learning needs. I enjoy both the in-person and virtual classroom, and am a passionate advocate of both standards-based learning and the STEAM curriculum. I believe I am an approachable, efficient, and competent teacher/tutor whom students can tell genuinely cares about their academic success and personal well-being. I look forward to acclimating myself into the Varsity Tutors culture. Nice to 'meet' you!

I believe the fundamental goal of teaching is to foster learning. Learning takes place in many different contexts. Although everyone is capable of learning, a student's desire to learn is a vital pre-condition to effectively master new concepts and skills. I feel I can influence a student's desire to absorb information by understanding their learning style. People have multiple learning styles: some learn best in lecture atmospheres, some are more engaged by discussion, and others absorb knowledge best when they read and reflect on what they have read. The classroom setting can encourage or inhibit learning depending on the dominant learning style of each student. Accommodating different learning styles creates an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. In addition to addressing different learning styles, flexibility is also a critical component to teaching. As an instructor, it is my job to ensure that learning is taking place all the time which is accomplished by breaking down barriers and observing my student's behaviors. While being prepared for class is critical, it is important to be able to deviate from the plan in order to ensure learning is taking place. No two students or classes are the same and what worked for one class may not be as effective for another class. Even from one class session to another, their mood can change. Students have a lot of on their plate, and sometimes they will come to class energized while other days they may be disengaged. I feel it is my job to identify these moments and adapt the lessons to re-engage them, maximizing our learning opportunities.I see my job as a facilitator because I am creating an atmosphere of learning by guiding students and encouraging their participation through both in-class discussions and online discussion boards. I encourage learning by creating a relaxed environment for students, stimulating conversation about concepts being presented, and organizing material in a way that makes it easiest to understand. I treat subject matter as interconnected, emphasizing that everything students are learning fits together into a holistic understanding of the world, from which they develop their own personal worldview. This approach is accomplished by bringing in real world projects to my classes. When students work on a project that connects to the course material but also has real-life practicality, they put greater effort into their final product. They appreciate the chance to work on something that will be used by an organization (e.g., Submitting real grant applications) rather than just filed away or discarded. One of the most important concepts I hope to impart to students is that learning is a process that never ends. For me, the learning process includes improving myself professionally. I want to read more about formal learning theories to expand my understanding of how learning takes place. As I continue to instruct classes, I also aim to enhance my comfort and confidence in front of classrooms and audiences. Finally, I plan to experiment with different methods and means of presenting information to classes in order to improve the learning atmosphere I create for my students. I continue to grow my professional network and share best practices with colleagues whenever possible in an order to keep my material relevant and adapt with the times."Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."- W.B. Yeats

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronic Engineering, a Masters Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, a MBA Degree and a Master's Degree in Information Systems. I'm an experienced Engineer/Manager, Programmer and Website Developer. I have always been interested in Science, Engineering, Math, and Technology. I'm obsessed with learning about computers and technology. I have learned Assembly, Pascal, C, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python programming languages. I have designed and built over 10 websites for organizations. I have 6 certificates in Python programming, 2 certificates in HTML/CSS and a certificate in JavaScript. My tutoring style is to spend time emphasizing the concepts of programming and make sure these concepts are understood. Once the programming concepts are understood the actual writing of code becomes much easier. I also spend time finding out what the student feels he/she has difficulty understanding. We will also review code that is already written so I can analyze the student's understanding of this code. I have a passion for helping others experience success in the STEM fields. I'm easy to reach by email, text or phone and will provide a fast response. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions.

I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.

I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with High Honors. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've guided adults towards passing the US Citizenship Exam and taught English in India, where I lived for six months. Whenever I work with a student I personalize the lessons to fit their particular learning style, since I know every student is unique and having the right fit can make all the difference in making learning fun and effective. My strengths are tutoring the social sciences and humanities, as well as making math and standardized tests approachable to students that normally don't like those subjects. In my spare time I like traveling, spending time in the outdoors (climbing & backpacking), meditation, and playing soccer. Next fall I will be beginning my PhD in Education at Harvard University.

I am a junior Mechanical Engineering major at Yale, and I hope to become a Naval Aviator after college. I am also a varsity sailor, and enjoy playing music with friends when I can get some free time. I have been tutoring my fellow students throughout my entire academic career, and I would best describe my tutoring style as one that adapts to each students' needs. For example, I have always tried to frame questions in a different way so that the student can better understand the question. Some students need visual representations of numbers and systems to understand them, and others benefit more by understanding the concepts behind each formula. I prefer to tutor in math and physics, and especially with real world application problems. I hope to help students improve their standardized test scores and their understanding of the math and sciences so that they can achieve their academic goals!

I am a rising sophomore at Harvard College and am about to declare as a Mechanical Engineering concentrator, working towards a Bachelor of Science degree. I've always enjoyed sharing my knowledge with my peers and those around me and have done so in both formal and informal settings. I've been a tutor for both Math and Spanish programs in high school and enjoyed the strides I made with students. I am willing to tutor any subject I have a background in, but am strong in mathematics, the sciences, Spanish, history, writing, and ACT prep. I enjoy teaching mathematics most due to the joy I can see in children once they master a topic and can answer even pointed questions meant to stump them, and maybe even put their knowledge to real world use. As a tutor, I like to give a strong foundation to orient my student, and then gradually grant them more freedom and independence until they can feel themselves grasp the concept, pointing out pitfalls or common errors along the way; teachers who used these methods on me always left the most lasting impressions. Outside of my studies, I really enjoy listening to music, both old favorites and new interests, reading classics, and gaming/playing basketball with my friends.
