Hi! I have taught high school math in Boston for three years. Most of my experience has been with Algebra 1 and Geometry, but I'm comfortable with all math content up through Calculus. Some of my most enjoyable and rewarding experiences working with students have been helping them with assignments individually during a free period or after school. I'm excited to leverage my experience in the classroom in work with even more students on a one-on-one basis.I believe that any students can make huge academic gains in any subject area - no matter how much they may struggle - with the right amount of work ethic and support. Exams should not be a barrier to anyone's personal ambitions. I look forward to sharing what I know to help students come closer to their full potential.

I have a PhD (Yale) in history and an MBA (UCLA) in finance. I have excellent writing and research skills, and have made extensive use of German and French -- spoken and for research. My work in finance has required skills with mathematics. I have taught university classes in finance and international economics. Another area of much interest, related to my background in history and public policy, is US constitutional law. I published a book on monetary history (*Gold, France, and the Great Depression*) , and a more recent book of essays on topics in economics and diplomatic history (http://books.ksplibrary.org/978-625-7501-75-0/ ) .... I have worked extensively on government-related projects, often in the greater Middle East. Effective tutoring should do more than impart techniques -- it should certainly do that -- it should help a student come away with some interest in and enthusiasm for the topic. (Soft evidence for the last is that my daughter earned a PhD in neuro-science, and credits me with inspiring her.)

I received my undergraduate degree in English at the University of Massachusetts Boston, where I graduated summa cum laude and won the James William Fay Essay Prize for best undergraduate writing for the 2009-2010 school year. I also minored in dance, with a focus on ballet, which I have been teaching for over 10 years. I went on to receive a master's degree in English at Boston College where I studied postcolonial literature and theory, with a specific focus on Anglophone literatures hailing from England, Ireland, and India. Since graduating, I have taught writing and literature at the undergraduate-level and helped students revise their writing for a wide array of classes as a university tutor. In my free time I like to take dance classes (having been trained in classical ballet myself) and go to concerts. I also like to read, watch movies, and catch the Patriots on Sundays.

I am a graduate of The University of Massachusetts at Boston. In this institution, I received my Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts, focusing on Elementary Education and a minor in psychology, my Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics, and a Doctorate in Leadership in Urban School Administration with a Special Education policy. Since graduation, I havetaught newcomer students and students with special education needs at the school level. Additionally, I have tutored students after school in communities with low socioeconomic status and professionals who recently moved to the United States and need to learn and improve their English to work.I have also traveled extensively, tutoring children of immigrants in Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Ecuador, sponsored by the Baptist Convention.I am most passionate about English, teaching reading strategies to those who do not know how to read or struggle with reading (special education students, students with interrupted education, and dyslexia, to mention a few).In my experience, instilling an early love of reading at the elementary school level gives a child a head start on expanding their vocabulary and building independence and self-confidence. In addition, it helps children learn to make sense of the world around them and people, building social-emotional skills and, of course, imagination. My passion is teaching and training. My first passion lies in teaching students who have not learned to read in their native language; however, they may struggle to put together the sound/symbol correspondence concept, new words, and new sounds since it is difficult for students to distinguish phonetic components in new vocabulary words. My second passion is teaching special education students to develop a reading ability to increase college and career readiness. My third passion is to train teachers and support school leaders, which I have done for the last ten years at the school and state levels.I have been a firm advocate of education for the last 27 years, believing it to be essential for improved well-being, and I always impart this passion to my students. In addition, I like to train parents in my free time by teaching them different strategies to help students in their education. Furthermore, I love to travel with my family because I love to spend time with them while visiting new places.

Late in the winter of 2003, I left Baylor University for Spain, where I would spend the next semester studying. When I arrived in Madrid, I was unfamiliar with the city and had to rush to catch the bus that would take me to my university, several hours to the north. Confused, tired and not at all proficient in Spanish, I chose the incorrect station. A kind cab driver, noticing my confusion, insisted he accompany me to find my bus. When it was obvious that I had chosen the wrong station, he took me to the correct station and again accompanied me inside to ensure I found my bus. Over the next four months, I repeatedly encountered such kindness and support from the university and community. These advantages helped improve my fluency rapidly and fostered an interest in linguistics and language, enriching my stay with cultural experiences I would not have otherwise had.I moved on from undergraduate study to a Master of Arts in Publishing and Writing at Emerson College, shifting my focus to design and visual interpretation. As I progressed along my professional track in educational publishing, my mind often returned to my time abroad; I chafed at my inability to regularly use the skills and interests that I acquired in undergraduate study. I also felt disconnected from my community and my frequently returned to my education experiences—particularly those in Spain—which were essential in my personal growth. With that in mind, I made the decision to leave the publishing industry and pursue a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.Ultimately, my degrees will prepare me to work with English Language Learners but I have wide-ranging personal interests and the interdisciplinary degree I received at Baylor University has given me a great foundation for tutoring in a number of subjects. I'm excited about working on students of all ages and levels on reading, writing, literature, and Spanish. I also am interested in helping students develop the organizational habits and study skills essential to academic success. Finally, I love working with students on test prep; giving students the skills they need to demystify exams such as the ACT, SAT or TOEFL is really a rewarding experience. When I'm not tutoring or working toward my degree at UMB, I enjoy spending time with my family—my husband and I have one small, silly dog (eight years) and one small, daughter (six months). I'm working on several knitting projects to keep all three of them warm in the coming winter and riding my bicycle as much as I can while it's still warm!

Hi! My name is Elena and I'm so excited to meet you soon!I've been a Kindergarten teacher for 4 years, I taught English in college at the University of Michigan, and I taught English in Chile, South America, for 1 year. Teaching English in Chile is really where I was inspired to become a full-time teacher, and use that passion to help others. I love meeting new people and learning about their walks of life and culture. I also love to chat, so I have many things ready for us to talk about and learn from one another. I'm a grammar nerd so I'm able to help with your English casually or more formally. I also speak Hebrew and Spanish, so I understand the challenges and joys of learning a new language.
