I am a graduate of The University of Texas at Arlington. I received my Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. During my years in high school, I became a tutor at an after-school program, which helped ESL students (9th - 11th) who were having difficulties with the material imparted in their classes, and I also helped them learn, practice, and improve their English. More recently, I had the opportunity to teach and tutor the subject of Spanish Literature for 7th and 9th graders in my home country, Mexico. While I have tutored different subject in the past such as English, Social Studies and Science, my favorite subjects are Mathematics and Spanish. Throughout my experience tutoring, I have found that it is necessary to utilize different teaching methods to meet students' needs so they can fully understand a topic or subject. My tutoring style is flexible since like I mentioned before, every student has distinct learning style. Whether the student has a short-term goal like passing a quiz or a long-term goal like getting a better grade in class, I would be more than eager to lend a helping hand. Besides tutoring, I enjoy painting, bicycling, watching movies or tv shows, and I am really excited for the winter Olympics since I love watching figure skating.

I am retired from 40+ years of engineering. The last thirty years was working in the flight simulation industry. I had responsibility for doing mathematical modeling of many systems which kept my my math and science skills well exercised. The flight simulation experience also involved frequent use of computer languages such as Ada, C, C++ and less frequent use of other computer languages such as python and java. Tutoring was part of the engineering environment as new engineers were assigned to my group. I earned extra money during my college years tutoring. Though money is not the end objective since retirement, I enjoy tutoring to remain active and challenged. The interaction with students is invigorating. Tutoring gives me a sense of contributing to the well-being of others. It is offering up my skills to help others get a strong start on a career. My tutoring style is to explain principles and possibly do a sample problem, but then observe the student apply the principles to work a problem, gently nudging them in the right direction. I prefer to tutor math and physics, but will not shy away from computer languages and other science applications.

Throughout my time in my studies, I found myself sharing what I learned in my classes to my friends and family; this lead me to realize my call to teaching. It hurts my heart every time I see another student struggle with school work (especially math and chemistry), and that is why I wanted to become a tutor. I love helping other people, and I like the one on one sessions with students so I can make sure they are getting the help they need to succeed. I am a college student at the University of Texas at Arlington, I am pursuing a bachelors degree in Chemistry with a minor in Material Science Engineering. Although in credits I am a year ahead, which means I am technically a sophomore (and I am on track to graduate a year early), this is only my second semester in college.My teaching method is to not answer the question for the student but to ask them questions and bring up fundamental ideas in the subject so the student is able to answer the homework problem on their own. With this teaching style the student will become an independent thinker and will be able to answer a multitude of different problems by being able to think them through. This will also build a students confidence in the subject because the student will eventually be able to answer the question themselves without having to refer to notes which will make them feel as smart as they are becoming!

From October 2009 through August 2014, I worked as a tutor (20+ hours per week) with a highly respected tutoring company. I tutored students of all ages in the areas of reading, writing, and math. I also prepared students for the SAT and ISEE. In September 2013, I started my own business doing private tutoring. I have continued to work with students of all ages in the areas of reading, writing, and math, and I have continued to prepare students for the SAT and ISEE. In general, about half of my students are doing test preparation and half are getting some kind of help with school. At the tutoring center where I worked, we had a number of students who were being tutored in order to become very advanced in their studies at school and to gain admission to highly selective colleges by getting top-notch scores on their SAT. We also had students who were struggling to do well in their classes and therefore needed help with their homework and with understanding the material they were learning in school. I worked successfully with both kinds of students. My approach to tutoring is definitely gentle, but also firm in terms of expecting my students to work hard during the tutoring sessions and to work diligently on any homework I might assign. I am sensitive to the learning styles of my students and do everything I can to communicate in a way that makes sense to them. I often make use of visuals and manipulatives in teaching various concepts. My goal is to enable students to really understand the material they are studying. I am happy to use whatever school or other materials that parents and/or students would like. I am also prepared to suggest additional materials that might be helpful for a particular student in a specific subject area. I am familiar with a number of very helpful resources. Before working at the tutoring center, I was actively involved in the homeschooling community. I homeschooled my older two children through high school and my younger two children through 8th grade. I also taught enrichment classes in the areas of math, science, music, and art to students of all ages in a homeschool co-op, for a total of eight years.

I earned my Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Tyler. While pursuing my undergraduate education, I became passionate about tutoring younger nursing students and carried my joy of knowledge sharing through being a preceptor in my career as a nurse.
