I'm from Philadelphia by way of Boston where I attended Brandeis University for Music Composition and Psychology. I am a musician and composer by trade, and I play saxophone, guitar, and piano (and I teach lessons in all 3!). Most recently, I've been involved in social work with people diagnosed with mental illnesses. Throughout college and during my 4 years in social work, I tutored individuals of all ages and abilities. During that time, I learned that anyone is capable of learning any subject they want. In addition, with the assistance of the right teacher, they are able to find a way to relate to the material on a more personal level. I have been tutoring for seven years, and from my experience, I have learned that you can truly get students to love subjects if you can break them down and explain them simply. I am passionate about teaching because there is so much wonderful and fascinating information available to us in any field a student might be interested in, be it math, science, English, American and European history, art, or another field.I received my Bachelor's degree in History from Brandeis University, and my Master's degree in Education from Boston University with a specialty in teaching English as a Second Language. As an ESL teacher, I met students from all over the world, including adult immigrants who were starting new lives in the United States. I also worked with students in every grade level of public school, from kindergarten to 12th grade. It was deeply rewarding to help immigrants to the U.S. learn the English language and adapt to life in their new country. I found that my ongoing curiosity about different fields of study and my knowledge of history made me a better ESL teacher. For example, if I couldn't think of a synonym for a word or concept, I could offer an example from history or art. My ongoing interest in history also helped me establish rapport with my students, as they were pleased that I knew something about their native countries.Many of my students of English as a Second Language had to take the SAT exam, so I branched out into tutoring for that test as well as other standardized tests. I know those tests are challenging, but I have helped quite a number of students improve their scores.Outside of teaching, my interests include classical and world music and dance, including classical forms of dance from India. I am a physician and medical educator with extensive experience helping students prepare for exams, including certification exams, and completing course work in the health professions. I received my undergraduate degree in neuroscience and biology from Brandeis University in 2009 and my MD from Boston University in 2014. I matched into a competitive general surgery residency, but left to pursue teaching full time. Most of my time has been with paramedic students, but I've worked with students from all areas of medicine and outside medicine. What draws me to teaching is the opportunity to work closely with a student to build both their understanding of a subject and confidence in their abilities; nothing is as rewarding as that moment when a difficult subject "clicks" for a student! I primarily tutor in the life and biomedical sciences, and physiology is probably my favorite subject to teach (it's so complex and fascinating!), though I do love pharmacology and basic biology, as well. After three years of tutoring students from kindergarten through high school and an adult in math, I have used and developed a teaching approach that values the student as a whole person, not just their test scores.I am patient, methodical, and understanding, and I work well with students who are willing to make an effort toward improving.I can tutor in the following subjects:- Math (elementary, middle-school, pre-algebra, algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, and introductory trigonometry and precalculus)- German (introductory and intermediate)- Test prep (including SAT, ACT, and GRE)- Biology (high-school and introductory, college-level)- Chemistry (high-school and introductory, college-level inorganic)I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, along with minors in Chemistry, German Language and Literature, and Environmental Studies.
