I received my Bachelor's at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and my Master's at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Since graduation, I have worked for Cengage Learning and have substituted at both private and public schools in the Chicago area.I believe strongly in independent learning and in fostering a student's passion for knowledge. Together, we will formulate a plan that best fits the student's needs and interests. I use guided questioning to find the strategies that best suit the student's abilities. My ultimate goal, aside from helping the student get a good grade or test score, is to help them become an independent learner, with a number of tools and strategies at their disposal. In addition to tutoring, I enjoy cooking and traveling. I am a graduate of Brandeis University with a BA in Computer Science and a Security+ certification from CompTIA. I offer tutoring in high school math, including but not limited to algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. My goal is to become a high school math teacher. While math can be a challenging subject, it can also be deeply rewarding. Math has countless applications in fields ranging from finance, engineering, science, health, technology/computation, data analysis, AI, economics, and many more areas. I firmly believe that with enough practice students can improve their grades and understanding of math.Math is best understood by doing. Once a concept is explained and demonstrated, students should then try to solve problems to see if they understand the ideas involved or if they need to spend some more time on the material before advancing to the next concept.

Becoming a physician was no easy feat, and neither were all those years of school and standardized tests along the way! But I didn't do it alone. I had tutors help me every step of the way. Not only did they help me to boost my grades, but they provided me with academic confidence and mentoring, all of which made me realize that my greatest goals could be a tangible reality. Now I couldn't be happier in my career as a surgeon in training.I have ever since been "paying it forward," educating high school and college level students, and now medical students. The greatest satisfaction is seeing my students get that "ah ha!" moment when everything comes together, and then seeing them go on to accomplish what they always thought was impossible. Now that I have some free time while doing research, I'm excited to give students that same confidence and mentorship that my tutors gave me.

I continued learning French, and in college I wrote several essays on popular French literature. My favorite subject to tutor is French because I love speaking the language. It gives me a chance to speak French more and to use the skills I've learned. I enjoy speaking French and hope to help others learn it too. I want to help students learn in the way they learn best; in the way that's easiest for them. I want to create an environment where students are free to ask whatever questions they have.** I'll be available until January 1st, 2023, but I'm not sure of my availability after that date. **

I am a tutor specializing in philosophy with competence in other basic logic-related subjects, like algebra and computer science. I am a graduate of Brandeis University, where I received both my Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in philosophy. During my time at Brandeis, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to tutor my peers as a Brandeis Undergraduate Group Study tutor. As a peer tutor, I guided fellow students through prepositional and predicate logic problem sets, worked through their arguments for ethics class, and helped edit their philosophy papers. Logic is my favorite to tutor due to its closeness to my personal interest in computer programming. In both cases there are answers to problems that are very much the only correct answer, but there may be many different ways of approaching said answer. This is something I particularly like to show my students: that even in the most stringent of cases, there is room for creativity and self-expression in the process of problem-solving.In my spare time, I enjoy toying around with programming languages like Ruby and Java, playing sports (ultimate frisbee, football, rowing, skiing, weightlifting), playing video games, and reading (mostly nonfiction).

I've been helping students and friends to edit and revise their writing across multiple styles for seven years. Throughout high school, I was part of an exclusive magnet school for creative writing called the Educational Center for the Arts: in the mornings I took core classes (math, science, history, etc) at a public high school, and in the afternoons I attended college-level workshops in fiction, screenplay, memoir, humor, and poetry. There, I learned from published writers and edited fellow students' pieces, including college essays, for four years while developing my own work.In college, I became the opinion section editor of my student newspaper. Last year, I served as its editor in chief. At The Justice, I've applied the skills I learned from creative writing to journalism and op-ed content. I already had experience clarifying sentences, helping writers develop a unique written voice, and keeping writing concise and precise, but through The Justice I learned how to find and support a strong argument, recognize logical fallacies in one's own thinking as well as in others, and conduct thorough, accurate and credible research. I also learned the AP's grammatical style guides inside and out, though remain a devotee of the Oxford comma. While most of my work in tutoring specifically has been with middle and high school-age students, I've also worked with younger students as a summer camp counselor and a teaching assistant. I've also got a strong theater background, both as a performer and a viewer.

Moreover, at Williams College I was a chemistry tutor for the Math/Science Resource Center for 2 years, in addition to being a peer tutor for an environmental studies class: Humans and the Biosphere. During my prior teaching experience, I discovered my favored teaching method: getting to know my students in a one-on-one environment, and learning about their interests. I then try to relate my teaching to my student's interests. If I can find an example relevant to their interests, I will use it. And if I'm using a metaphor, again, I try to choose metaphors most relevant to them.I specialize in a mix of organic chemistry and biochemistry, but I have a broad liberal arts background, so my knowledge can range from astronomy to theater to art history to baking. During college, I was a teaching assistant for the introductory psychology course, and I have tutored English to students of all ages, mostly high school students. I tutor English, Biology, and Psychology (with a possibility of tutoring SAT Critical Reading and Writing). I am very passionate about biology, and for me, biology is the most fun to tutor. However, because I take many science courses at school, it is especially nice to tutor non-science courses such as English and psychology, subjects that I also really enjoyed throughout high school and college. As a current student, I understand how some subjects can be extremely overwhelming. I believe that one way to strengthen one's understanding of a topic is to take a step backward and reinforce the knowledge of prior topics. My goal is to help students understand the basics before moving onto more complicated topics. In addition, I would like to help students foster an appreciation for education and to understand why they are learning these subjects. In my spare time, I enjoy watching and playing basketball, seeing Broadway musicals, going to concerts, and watching movies (particularly Pixar/Disney and Marvel/DC movies!)

I have been tutoring for seven years, and from my experience, I have learned that you can truly get students to love subjects if you can break them down and explain them simply. My favourite part of tutoring students is when they come to me after a few weeks of math lessons and tell me that, suddenly, math in school isn't so boring and difficult anymore, and that they are really starting to enjoy their classes in school. I love tutoring math, and have spent the most time there, but also enjoy teaching biology, chemistry, and environmental science, as I have taken all the AP versions of those classes and am currently pursuing a degree in Biochemistry and Mathematics.

As an ESL teacher, I met students from all over the world, including adult immigrants who were starting new lives in the United States. I also worked with students in every grade level of public school, from kindergarten to 12th grade. It was deeply rewarding to help immigrants to the U.S. learn the English language and adapt to life in their new country. I found that my ongoing curiosity about different fields of study and my knowledge of history made me a better ESL teacher. For example, if I couldn't think of a synonym for a word or concept, I could offer an example from history or art. My ongoing interest in history also helped me establish rapport with my students, as they were pleased that I knew something about their native countries. Many of my students of English as a Second Language had to take the SAT exam, so I branched out into tutoring for that test as well as other standardized tests. I know those tests are challenging, but I have helped quite a number of students improve their scores.Outside of teaching, my interests include classical and world music and dance, including classical forms of dance from India. I also love to cook, and am always trying new recipes. I look forward to meeting more wonderful students as I work for Varsity Tutors.
