I grew up in Flushing, Queens and attended Stuyvesant High School. I recently graduated Amherst College with an English and Neuroscience double degree. As the oldest in the family, I have been tutoring and mentoring my siblings and cousins my entire life. I worked as a volunteer tutor throughout high school and started to tutor professionally during my senior year. Ever since, I have been working as a private tutor, either in tutoring centers or for personal contacts. I have tutored privately and professionally throughout NYC. Hi! I have taught high school math in Boston for three years. Most of my experience has been with Algebra 1 and Geometry, but I'm comfortable with all math content up through Calculus. Some of my most enjoyable and rewarding experiences working with students have been helping them with assignments individually during a free period or after school. I am a rising sophomore at Amherst College, one of the nation's top liberal arts colleges. I am pursuing a double major in mathematics and philosophy - the combination of STEM and the humanities was a key reason why I chose Amherst and the liberal arts experience for my education. Ever since my freshman year of high school, I have been actively involved in tutoring. I have tutored elementary school students in Harlem in reading comprehension and vocabulary building; middle school students in the South Bronx in Latin and Roman mythology; high school students at my previous school in geometry, English, French, and Latin; and this year, I am tutoring a graduate student who recently immigrated to the United States in ESL and conversational English. As for my preferred subjects, I have an abundance of knowledge of and experience with college test preparation (both SAT and ACT, but especially the SAT). Because I went through the standardized testing process myself not too long ago, the top strategies and preparation methods for successful performances on these key exams are fresh on my mind. I have experience tutoring clients in the SAT and have worked with them to achieve significant improvement. All in all, I am passionate about getting to know my clients and working with them to make learning engaging using strategies that are the most effective for them individually. I am a strong believer in utilizing as many teaching methods as possible (visual, auditory, hands-on, project-based learning, etc.) to pinpoint the method that works the best for my students. Before I was a tutor, I was a teacher, and before I was a teacher, I was a mentor. I have spent most of my adulthood working with students in some way, shape, or form. I've worked with a lot of students from various backgrounds and across ages. I've also tutored in almost every subject, but math is my specialty. In 2016, I received my Master's degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts at Boston. I was a licensed teacher when I lived in Massachusetts, and now I am teaching Algebra 1 in New Jersey.

My expertise is in classroom, small group, and one-on-one instruction in physics of the first year. I have, however, taught at all levels from non-science major courses through the graduate physics curriculum. My education includes a bachelor's degree in physics from Amherst College and a doctorate from Stanford University. During my career I spent time at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, the University of California, San Diego, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology, and Brandeis University, where I worked for nearly 40 years. I am a firm believer that students learn in STEM fields only by doing, not by merely listening. Thus the core of any tutoring experience with me is working on problems. The most formative experience a student can have is to work through a problem, explaining each step to the tutor as he or she goes through it. Only by explaining the concepts and skills to someone else can one be sure of his or her own understanding. My goal in any tutoring interaction is to assist the student in gaining the necessary skills, knowledge, and confidence to attack any conceivable problem set to him or her by a classroom teacher.

I am a student of Amherst College. I'm in process to get my Bachelor of Arts in Film & Media Studies. I've been teaching since my main teacher at art school told me, "I have too many students and too little time. You know all I've taught you: would you be willing to step in as my Teacher's Assistant?" Since then, I've been connecting with students from 5 years old to 50 on the artistic and creative process. This love of teaching led me to become a tour guide at my college and at the campus art museum - the lucky thing is that at both positions I have the chance to both teach about what I love but also persuade my listeners to love it too: nothing's better than a potential college applicant saying, "I'll definitely apply!" or an elementary school kiddo asking, "So wait, museums are cool?" I am a true believer in education in all facets of life to be made available to all people: I know it's enriched my life, and I sure hope I can use my skills to enrich others'. I know there is nothing more satisfying than a job well done; I know my students will achieve the same satisfaction during our tutoring sessions! When I'm not doing all that, I enjoy hiking, cultural excursions, and social dance -- nothing like a swing beat to relax!

I graduated Amherst College summa cum laude with a degree in neuroscience in 2014. After graduating I completed a master's degree in biochemistry at the University of Cambridge in England. I then worked as self-employed tutor for a few months before starting a teaching fellowship in Colombia, where I taught high school English. I am currently interviewing for medical school for matriculation in August 2017.I have a variety of teaching and tutoring experiences, including working as a self-employed tutor, an organic chemistry teaching assistant, and a high school English teacher. I primarily tutor math, science, the MCAT, and Spanish. I recognize that success in school depends on study habits and techniques as much as understanding material, so I try to include as many study tips as I can in my sessions. I am sophomore at Amherst College, working towards obtaining an undergraduate degree in Mathematics, with a potential double major in either Psychology or Black Studies. I have always enjoyed teaching others and helping my peers with their homework, especially in math. I really love working with students to help them understand concepts they find difficult by looking at those concepts from different angles. I have done some one-on-one math tutor, as well as often helping my peers with their math homework in various levels of math. I tutor many math subjects, including elementary math, pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, pre-Calculus and Calculus 1. Math has always been my favorite subject, and I like to tutor math because I think anyone is capable of doing math if they are taught in a method they can understand. I like to work with students to find an approach to math problems that they comprehend. I will try multiple approaches to the same problem until I find one that works for each specific student. Outside of tutoring and school, I love to meet new people and try new things. I enjoy watching football, painting and crafting, reading, and baking.

I'm Alex, a 28-year old with a passion for teaching science and for helping students conquer standardized tests. Since I began working as a physics, math, and SAT tutor with Varsity Tutors in 2011, I've found it incredibly rewarding to help my students develop sustainable study habits and realize their academic potential. I believe that a student's performance is largely influenced by their weekly study routine, and I make it a priority to help my students figure out a process that works well for them.For a bit of background, I graduated from Amherst College with a B.A. in Architecture & Environmental Studies. After college, I received a Fulbright Scholarship to study architecture at Cambridge University, where I got my Master's degree in Architecture. Due to some personal exposure I had to family illness, I decided to switch paths and pursue a career in medicine, and I'll be applying to medical school next year.I've been helping students with physics, math, and SAT prep since college, and more recently I've been focusing on tutoring pre-medical subjects (Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Physics, Psychology/Sociology) and MCAT preparation. As a teacher, my mission has always been to make scientific knowledge accessible to ALL students, and help them see why it's worth the effort to pursue. I've been a high school physics teacher for the past 15 years, and also a strong advocate for equity in science education. I received my undergraduate degree in Physics from Amherst College, and later a masters degree in Science and Math Education from UC Berkeley. While I've always had an interest in science, I've come to see myself as someone who teaches *people* rather than *science*. That is, I really enjoy helping students become more confident & independent learners, critical thinkers, and problem solvers. I feel honored to be a part of any students' growth. :)
