How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, or PSAT, is a standardized test taken by high school students as practice for the SAT. Varsity Tutors may connect your student with a professional PSAT tutor in Sacramento, CA, who may teach your student how to study effectively. Performing well on the exam is important because it provides an indication of how a student may do on the SAT. In addition, a good score may make your child eligible for a National Merit Scholarship. The exam is given once a year, usually in October. Most students take the exam during their junior year of high school, though there are alternate versions that may be taken in 8th, 9th, or 10th grade. The PSAT is also used as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). Only the score on the 11th grade exam may be used for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students with very high PSAT scores may become finalists for prestigious scholarships. In addition, many colleges and universities seek to attract National Merit Scholars and may provide additional scholarships and incentives to high scoring students. We may find you a talented PSAT tutor in Sacramento, CA, who may work with students at all proficiency levels.

The PSAT is designed to have similar types of questions and format as the SAT. The PSAT has also recently been revised to reflect changes in the SAT. The PSAT assesses your child's abilities in two main areas. There is one section on evidence-based reading and writing and one section on math. In the reading section, students are asked to draw evidence-based conclusions from literature, science, history, and social science passages. For writing, students must demonstrate knowledge of punctuation, grammar, and word usage. The math questions assess the ability to solve algebra problems, analyze data, and use advanced math equations. One-on-one tutoring in Sacramento may afford your child the ability to fine-tune their PSAT skills by asking questions and getting immediate feedback. There are many benefits to working with a tutor for test preparation. Though many of the skills assessed by the test are things students learn in school, a tutor may focus on areas needing the most development and teach them in the way that is easiest for the student to understand. A tutor may also provide a wide variety of study materials and test-taking strategies which may have a dramatic effect on your child's score. Why let your child struggle to figure out how to succeed on the PSAT when an expert may train them to perform their best? Varsity Tutors may connect you with tutors in Sacramento who are skilled at helping students prepare for PSAT. Working on-on-one with a PSAT tutor in Sacramento, CA, makes studying easier.

Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

PSAT Tutoring review by Trey in Sacramento, CA
We reviewed incorrect answers from the critical reading and math sections in practice test 1. The student outlined an essay for a prompt. We reviewed the first column of vocabulary. We then went through the writing skills section in practice test 2. The student is going to finish at least one reading and math section and study two more columns of vocabulary. Her scores on reading and math are strong.

PSAT Tutoring review by Grant in Sacramento, CA
We worked on a variety of topics out of the student's review book, going from math to writing to critical reading. Her practice results showed that writing was her weakest point, but she performed very well this evening. I'd like her to work on memorizing geometric formulas to help her set up solutions.

PSAT Tutoring review by Laurel in Sacramento, CA
For this final session, I created a review packet listing all the topics we've addressed over the past six sessions. The student has both a printed copy of this packet, as well as a pdf version that I emailed to her. We reviewed her homework, and used her results on the verbal sections from the practice exam. She is still mastering the critical reading skills. As she continues to practice putting the passages into the 4-part framework, her reading/processing speed should increase. This will allow her more time to complete the CR questions. We also reviewed the following math topics: mean/median/mode, and exponents (rules, negative exponents). Her 'homework' going forward is to continue to review the vocab we've already covered, and to learn ~8 new vocab words per week. She should also continue practicing with critical reading questions/passages.

PSAT Tutoring review by Robert in Sacramento, CA
We spent most of the session today discussing strategies for and working on practice problems from the reading section of the test, which is her weakest section. She then practiced problems from the math section.

PSAT Tutoring review by Austin in Sacramento, CA
I had left the student the remains a diagnostic test for homework and I was pleased to see he had completed it. I graded the test and we were able to get a sense of what seems to need the most attention: Math & Grammar (specifically the replacement section). Unfortunately I was unable to find a scale to convert his score but nevertheless we now have a better idea of what we need to work on. We spent most of the session going over the problems that the student got wrong. He struggled with the fill in the blank math but once we covered them together, he seemed to realize his simple mistakes. I left the student with some grammar homework and the plan to cover the grammar rules in greater depth next time.
