A bowling ball is dropped from a height of onto a spring. If the spring is to compressed before halting the ball, what is the spring constant of the spring?
This questions requires an understanding of the conversion of gravitational potential energy to potential energy stored in the compression of a spring. The ball's initial potential energy is where is the mass of the ball, is the acceleration due to gravity, and is the height of the ball. The energy stored in a compressed spring is where is the potential energy, is the spring constant (typically given in ) and is the compression of the spring. By setting the gravitational potential energy equal to the energy stored in the spring, we can solve for the spring constant :
Example Question #12 : Forces
A block with mass is attached to a vertically hanging spring with negligible mass and spring constant and is allowed to reach a new equilibrium position. Approximately how far does the spring stretch from its initial equilibrium position?
The new equilibrium position will be where the spring force is opposite in direction and equal in magnitude to the gravitational force on the mass. This occurs where where is the displacement of the spring from equilibrium. Solving for , we get .
Example Question #62 : College Physics
Supposed that an object attached to a spring with a spring constant of is displaced by a certain amount. The elastic potential energy contained within the spring is . What is the magnitude of the force acting on the object from the spring at this instant?
The first step in answering this question is to recognize that we're dealing with two components of a spring; force and energy. Hence, we'll need to utilize both equations. Because both of them share the term for the displacement of the object, that will be the variable that links the two expressions.
Having isolated the variable for displacement, we can plug this value into the force equation.
Now, we can plug in the values given to us in the question stem.
Note that the negative sign shown here indicates the direction of the force. This is because the force is acting in the direction opposite the displacement of the object. Since the question stem asks for the magnitude of force, we don't need to include the negative sign in our answer.
Example Question #12 : Forces
A mechanic is able to exert a maximum torque of using a small wrench. The mechanic adds an attachment to the wrench that doubles the handle length. What is the maximum amount of torque the mechanic can exert with the new wrench?
The maximum amount of torque is the magnitude of the torque vector , which is maximized when the angle between the applied force and the displacement vector is 90 degrees. Then the torque is given by , where is the length of the wrench and is the magnitude of the force applied. Since the mechanic doesn't get any stronger, but the handle length increases, the torque doubles.
Example Question #1 : Torque
An object weighing sits on a board at a distance away from a fulcrum. At what distance to the right of the fulcrum would an object need to be in order to make the board flat?
For this question, we'll need to take torque into account. The amount of torque caused by the object to the left of the fulcrum needs to be equal to the torque of the object to the right of the fulcrum.
Moreover, we can write out the equation for torque.
Combining these equations, we can set an expression for the torque on the left and the torque on the right.
Then we can set them equal to each other.
Next, we isolate the term for the distance on the right and we cancel out common units.
Finally, we plug in the values given in the question stem. Because we're told that both objects are sitting flat on the board, we know the force of their weight is perpendicular to the board, which gives a value of .
Example Question #61 : College Physics
Consider the image shown below.
In the container on the left, there is a gas at an unknown pressure. The tubing connected to the container is open to the atmosphere, which has a pressure of . If the liquid contained within the tubing shows a pressure difference of , as in the above image, what is the pressure of the gas in the container?
In this question, we're told that an unknown gas is held within a container. Connected to this container is a tube open to the atmosphere which also contains a liquid. Based on the image shown, the height difference of the liquid levels, and the atmospheric pressure, we're asked to determine the pressure of the unknown gas inside the container.
This is a fairly straight-forward problem that asks us about pressure. Because of the way the tubing is situated, the pressure from the atmosphere will push down on the right side of the tubing, while the pressure from the unknown gas in the container will push down on the left part of the tubing. Since the liquid level on the left is lower than on the right, we can infer that the gas in the container is "pushing" on the liquid more strongly than the atmosphere on the other side. Consequently, we know that the gas in the container has a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure.
The difference in height of the liquid levels allows us to quantitatively determine how much greater this pressure is. Since the height difference shows up as , we know that the gas in the container is more than atmospheric pressure.
Example Question #1 : Pressure
An object is initially submerged below the surface of water. If this same object is then lowered to a depth of below the surface of water, how does the absolute pressure on the object change?
The absolute pressure slightly decreases

The absolute pressure slightly increases
For this question, we need to understand the relationship between gauge pressure, ambient pressure, and absolute pressure.
The absolute pressure that an object experiences has two components; ambient and gauge pressure. The ambient pressure is an arbitrarily defined reference pressure that acts on the object. Generally, atmospheric pressure at sea level is used as the reference value, which is . The gauge pressure is measured relative to the ambient pressure that has been used as a reference point. Gauge pressure is dependent on the density of the fluid in which the object is submerged together with the distance under which the object is submerged in the fluid.
The equation for absolute pressure can be expressed as follows.
In the above expression, is one component of the gauge pressure and refers to the distance of the object from the surface of water. As the object is submerged deeper, it will experience a greater gauge pressure and thus a greater absolute pressure.
But what happens if were doubled from to , as stated in the question stem? This would certainly cause the gauge pressure to double, but would it cause the absolute pressure to double? The answer is no; there is still the atmospheric pressure to take into account, which maintains the same value in both cases. Because we are increasing the gauge pressure, we know that absolute pressure will increase, but not to the extent of doubling. Thus, we know that it will increase slightly.

Fluid flows into a pipe with a diameter of at a rate of . If the other end of the pipe has a cross sectional area of , what is the speed of the fluid as it exits the pipe?
This question tests the concept of the continuity equation which stipulates that at steady state the volume flowing into one end of a pipe must be exactly equal to the volume flowing out of the other end. That is, . Note that in this case, we are given the inlet diameter and not cross-sectional area. Thus, we must also find the inlet's cross-sectional area by using the formula for the area of a circle.
