HSPT Quantitative Help

The High School Placement Test is a nationally recognized standardized test that is required by many private schools. This test may be used for scholarship consideration, admission decisions, class placement, or any combination of all three factors. There are five main categories in which your child will be tested on the HSPT: verbal, language, quantitative, mathematics, and reading. The quantitative section of the HSPT is challenging, with over 50 multiple-choice questions your child must answer in just 30 minutes. Your child has more than likely been exposed to all of the content covered, but additional HSPT Quantitative review may help your child to increase their knowledge before test day. Learn by Concept is one of Varsity Tutors’ Learning Tools that can be very helpful when it comes to preparing for the Quantitative HSPT.

Learn by Concept is designed as a content-specific HSPT Quantitative study guide. It is comprised of four main categories, including number manipulation, number series, geometric comparison, and non-geometric comparison. Your child can use the Learn by Concept to brush up on their skills using the included HSPT Quantitative sample questions on all four subjects, or they can select a link under one of the four main categories to access more concept-specific HSPT Quantitative review. The Learn by Concept resource is a great way to quickly assess your child’s strengths and weaknesses.

Each of the links on the Learn by Concept page will lead your child to one or more multiple-choice questions that simulate the questions present on the actual HSPT. Each HSPT Quantitative example question is followed by a results page, which provides the answer and a detailed explanation showing the concepts used and the work required to obtain the correct answer. Each question’s answers are randomly shuffled each time your child revisits that concept. This keeps your child from automatically recalling the answer to the question based on its placement on the screen.

Quantitative skills are best practiced in conjunction with mathematical skills. The two areas of study call on your child’s ability to understand basic concepts, reason quantitatively, and solve problems in a quantitative setting. The Learn by Concept resource is available for both the quantitative and math sections of the HSPT. Other Learning Tools available include Flashcards, the Question of the Day, concept-specific Practice Tests, and Full-Length Practice Tests. Online Flashcards are great for working on memorization and to practice drilling specific concepts. Flashcards also allow your child to spend as little or as much time as they have to study each concept. The Question of the Day is another quick way to get a little HSPT Quantitative review into your child’s busy schedule. The Practice Tests allow your child the opportunity to experience HSPT practice within a timed and scored setting.
