Certified Tutor
I am a currently a high school mathematics teacher. I graduated from the University of Richmond majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing Analytics and a minor in Mathematics. I have worked with kids of all ages, ranging from elementary school to college students through various subjects. I have also worked extensively with special needs children, doing everything from teaching special education to one-on-one in-home mentoring. Through my experiences, I have continued to carry my passion for working with children and have developed my skills in making successful and individualized learning fun. Math, science and test prep are the subjects I'm particularly passionate about tutoring, as I've always loved those subjects myself. Additionally, I've worked extensively with adults on business skills, marketing and social media.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that education is integral in development and students should be taught in an individualized way as each student is different.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know the student as an individual and then assess strong and weak points for the student, and then go from there.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Instilling study skills and organizational strategies are important in aiding a student to become more independent.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Repetition and practice are key in mastery of a concept, whether that be individual practice problems or repeated explanations of the topic in different ways.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Identifying weak areas and suggesting strategies to help dissect pieces is often beneficial.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Being able to quickly start to understand how each student works allows for better connection and more efficient use of time.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Relating a subject to something that the student enjoys and having a positive attitude can often shift a student's negativity towards a topic.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Asking the student to explain a topic or question back to me shows mastery if they can explain what they've done.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
A positive attitude and showing the student their success and growth can quickly grow confidence.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Making sure that the student is engaged in the material and organized encourages motivation. Helping increase the student's confidence in the subject will make them want to do more.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Asking a student to explain how they are answering questions while they do it is one method of understanding their thinking and the pieces they may not understand.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Depending on what the student needs help with, different strategies and motivational techniques can be used.
