I am a graduate of Kansas State University where I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. I also have graduate degrees in Management Information Systems from Bowling Green State University and a Doctorate Degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. Throughout my career, I have remained passionate about Math. I have a strong desire to help students learn and succeed in their Math courses. I take pleasure in taking any opportunity that is available to me to help students succeed in their Math courses. I have tutored students in Math as a volunteer and also as a paid member of staff. I have also taught college courses in Math. I am willing and able to work with any student in Math. I only ask of my students to commit to working hard, practice solving Math problems, and try creative ways to learn and master the subject. The students that I have tutored have gone on to succeed in their Math courses in high school and college. I do receive feedback from my students and their parents thanking me for the help provided. In my spare time, I enjoy keeping up with the latest information technology, exercising, and following major college and professional sports.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I am very committed to providing a learning environment that is both exciting and rigorous, one that empowers both student and teacher in pursuing learning. I devise various assessment strategies that allow me to fairly assess student learning regardless of the student's learning styles. Above all, I treat my students with the utmost respect, creating an environment where students feel safe to candidly discuss topics that they might otherwise be hesitant to address. For all my classes, regardless of size, I pride myself on learning the names of all my students and treating each student as an individual. Students reward my commitment to them by committing themselves to the class as a whole as well as to the furtherance of their own education.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would try to know more about the student and what areas of the subject matter are of concern. I would find out the immediate need and develop strategies and plans to addresses those needs and concerns.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Provide the student suggestions, tips, and guidelines on things that he / she can do to develop good learning habits.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Provide feedback and encouragement on each accomplishment and be a cheerleader, cheering on the student to success.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would try different reading and comprehension strategies to find what will be most helpful for the student. It could be to relax, go to a quiet place, do something fun, and then attempt to read and understand the material.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Start off each session with something lighthearted. Get the student to relax and view the session as a fun activity.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Try to demonstrate the value of the subject and how knowledge of the subject can be beneficial to the individual and to society.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Have the student demonstrate via testing and explaining the material to me. We could also role play and have the student be a teacher and teach others the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Positive reinforcement. Be a cheerleader, and encourage the student.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By asking the student and by observing and evaluating how the student is performing.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By being flexible and finding the best method that works for a given student and situation.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Paper, pen, pencil, calculator, reference material. Electronic sources.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try a different approach. Use analogies to help the student understand. Try some fun activity that may help the student.
