Motivarton by Vicenta - January 2017 Scholarship Essay
Growing up my parents’ lack of an education made it impractical for me to have any educational resources handed to me. Although I struggled in the beginning, I successfully made my way through school and learned to fend for myself. Looking back, I believe no one should have to go through school alone. Therefore I became a California Scholarship Federation tutor; because I understand what it’s like to be completely lost and confused in school. I am empowered knowing I am now capable of communicating my knowledge to another student in a subject I excel in. Being a CSF tutor and a member of Link Crew, I am an excellent resource for struggling students to access and come to for help.
I spend countless afternoons at the La Jolla High School Library, tutoring my peers. My strongest subjects are math and French. I've learned to be patient when tutoring and to accommodate to the student's form of learning, never giving up on the student’s ability to comprehend the material. In my set of mind, anyone can succeed in a school with the help of the right person. My goal is to pick up students when the have given up on themselves and have no hope in school.
In addition to tutoring other students in the La Jolla High School library, I am also responsible for guiding my younger brother, who is home schooled due to vision disabilities and ongoing surgeries. I've learned to accommodate to his needs by enlarging text, for example, when helping him solve a math equation or helping him edit his essays. I am his peer tutor and teacher. Seeing him succeed academically, while still having his health to worry about, motivates me.
If there is anything I’ve gained from tutoring, it is motivation. If my brother can manage to keep his spirit up and pursue his education then anyone can do it.
